Chapter 119: ROGOURAU IN ACTION

{"Guard, protect, and cherish your land, for there is no afterlife for a place that started as Heaven." }

Blossom took a step forward, her expression shifting as if she had finally come to terms with Rita’s strategy. She glanced around the room, then nodded firmly. "I agree with your plan," she said, her voice steady. Without hesitation, she strode toward Rita and extended her hand in greeting. Rita chuckled, shaking Blossom’s hand with an amused glint in her eyes. The room remained silent, watching the rare display of unity between the two women.

Blossom then added, "The blood of the shifter lands runs deep in your veins, Rita. You will make a magnificent leader one day."

A faint blush dusted Rita’s cheeks, and just as she opened her mouth to respond, a low, menacing growl echoed through the room. Every head snapped toward Flora. She stood rigid, her hands clenched into fists at her sides, emerald-green eyes burning with something primal. A mix of confusion and realization settled over me as the growl faded into a tense silence.

Rita, ever the fearless one, smirked and strolled over to Flora with a teasing gleam in her gaze. "Calm down, mate," she murmured playfully, placing a gentle hand on Flora’s chest. "She was only complimenting me." The collective gasp from the council was almost comical. Even Blossom, who had been the source of the compliment, looked mildly taken aback.

It was Elder Mercury who finally broke the silence. His silver eyes gleamed with pride as he leaned forward in his seat, a satisfied smile stretching across his weathered face.

"Finally," he declared. "I can rest assured now that my daughter has found a mate."

A murmuring spread through the room as the revelation settled. Then my mother, Elder Crystal, let out a lighthearted sigh before speaking up. "Let’s focus on defending our lands first," she reminded the room, though a knowing smile played at her lips. "Afterward, we shall hold a celebration feast for the new mates."

Then, with an arched brow, she added, "But is there a love bug floating around that I should know about?"

Laughter rippled through the council, but beneath the amusement, the weight of our mission still loomed over us. The vampires were coming. And no matter how many bonds were forged in this room tonight, none of it would matter if we didn’t stand strong against what lay ahead.

Hours later, true to Rita’s words, she and Ralph had gathered the Rougarou army and guardians, positioning them at key points, the beach, the borders, and the route leading to Hanka Island. Every step of our preparation had been executed with precision. We worked tirelessly, ensuring that even the heart of Bay Shifter City remained fortified.

The people had been ordered indoors, their safety was our priority. Until the danger passed, no one was to step outside. The streets, usually filled with laughter and the lively chatter of the pack, now stood eerily silent. It was unsettling but necessary. I stood at the beach’s edge, my boots sinking slightly into the damp sand, the salt-heavy wind whipping through my hair. The vast ocean stretched before us, dark and endless under the night sky. Somewhere beyond those waves, death was coming.

Beside me, Ralph stood rigid, his jaw set in a hard line. Though he didn’t say it aloud, I could feel his anxiety pulsing through the bond. His shoulders were tense, his hands clenched into fists at his sides.

I reached over, clasping his wrist gently, grounding him. "They’ll come," I said, my voice low. "And we’ll be ready."

Ralph exhaled sharply, nodding. "I know. I just, " He hesitated, scanning the horizon. "Something doesn’t feel right."

A shiver ran down my spine at his words. The night air carried a sense of foreboding, thick and heavy, pressing against my chest. Then, from the distance, the wind shifted. And with it, the first scent of death rolled in. The shift in the Rogourau mood was unmistakable. Their bodies tensed, their eyes darkened, and a low, unified growl rumbled through them like a warning carried on the wind. Instinctively, they moved toward the water’s edge, forming an unbreakable line of defense. Then, we saw them. The vampires didn’t arrive on boats as we had expected. No. They had swum.

One by one, they emerged from the water, hundreds of them, their pale, slick bodies breaking the surface like the undead rising from the depths. Their movements were unnatural, eerily synchronized, like a twisted maze shifting in the sea. Water dripped from their hair; their hollow eyes gleaming under the moonlight as they stepped onto our shores. The Rogourau did not move. They stood still, watching, waiting, their patience unnerving. The vampires crept closer, hissing, their razor-sharp teeth bared as they prepared to lunge.

Then it happened. All at once, the Rogourau opened their mouths, and fire erupted from their throats. I stumbled back, my eyes widening as an inferno swallowed the night. Flames shot from their jaws like dragons of old, scorching the air, land lighting up the battlefield in a blinding blaze. The vampires shrieked, their bodies catching fire instantly, their flesh curling and blackening before they could even react. The beach turned into a warzone of fire and ash.

"What the hell?!" I yelled; my voice drowned by the roaring flames.

Beside me, Ralph smirked, completely unfazed. "Did I forget to mention that?" he said, his tone far too casual for what I had just witnessed.

I turned to him, still stunned. "You think?!"

A deep chuckle rumbled from his chest. "Welcome to the full power of the Rogourau. We get our full power from Sagstone Mountain and the power of the fire has always been hidden but at this point it’s necessary. "I barely had time to process his words before another wave of vampires came surging from the water.

The battle raged on for close to an hour, the clash of fire and water turning the shore into a battlefield of smoke and ashes. The vampires, relentless at first, kept coming in waves, their screeches piercing the night as they burned. But then, something shifted.

They hesitated.

The realization dawned on them, Bay Shifter land was impenetrable.

One by one, they stopped advancing, their crimson eyes darting between the Rogourau and the flames that had consumed their brethren. The last of them let out guttural snarls before retreating, vanishing beneath the water’s surface like phantoms dissolving into the abyss. And then... silence.

The smoke curled in thick, ghostly tendrils above the sea, a lingering reminder of the war that had just unfolded. The Rogourau remained still, unmoving, their hulking forms lined along the shore like ancient sentinels of fire and shadow. Not one of them looked tired. Not one of them wavered. They were, without a doubt, the most formidable beasts I had ever seen.

I turned to Ralph, my mind still trying to grasp what I had just witnessed. He caught my expression and chuckled. "Oh, this is nothing," he mused, eyes gleaming with amusement. "Rou is far scarier than anything you could ever imagine."

My eyes widened. "You are fucking kidding me, right?"

Ralph only smirked. For a moment, I just stared at him, then without thinking, I grabbed him and pulled him into an embrace. He let out a surprised laugh before wrapping his arms around me. And just like that, after a night filled with chaos, fire, and the impossible, we both burst into laughter, the sound echoing against the waves. We had won the first round of the battle and Bay Shifter land was safe.

As I stood on the beach, the moon casting a silver glow over the restless waters, I turned to Ralph and suggested, "Let’s spend the night here."

Ralph, ever the stubborn one, shook his head. "No. I need to sleep on familiar ground—a place that has our scent covered all over."

I scoffed and pushed him lightly. "Ralph, get serious! We just fought a battle. The least we can do is stay here and ensure everything remains calm through the night."

But instead of arguing further, he leaned in, his voice dropping to a low whisper. "The Rogourau are on guard. If anything happens, they will send word to us immediately. We need proper rest, Tiger. You know I’m right."

His words sank in, and despite my initial resistance, I felt the tension ease from my shoulders. He was right. The battle had drained us, and though my instincts told me to stay alert, I had to trust in the guardians who had already proven their strength.

With a quiet sigh, I nodded. "Fine."

A slow smile spread across Ralph’s lips, and without another word, he took my hand. Together, we left the beach, the scent of smoke and salt lingering in the air behind us.

We returned to Paradise Bay City, making sure to check every security post, reinforcing patrols, and ensuring that every corner of our home was safe. It was only after the final round of inspections that we made our way toward the forest, where the trees whispered in the night breeze, a stark contrast to the chaos we had just endured.

The moment we stepped into our resting place, surrounded by the scent of the earth and the familiarity of home, I felt my body finally give in to exhaustion. Ralph lay beside me, close enough that our warmth blended into one.

"Now it’s my turn to take you "Ralph whispered and my body stiffened in response.
