Chapter 146: Crooked idea 2
While raw meat was plenty, the cooked dragon meat was not. In this wilderness, the only way for it to get cooked meat was from them.
He was sure that once the creature eats cooked meat, it will be hooked on its taste, thus deepening their interaction.
And if they were lucky, it would open an avenue for them to befriend and tame the beast.
So, cooked meat was an essential part of their ploy to tame the beast.
To further sell this ploy, they also decided to follow a predictable pattern of living.
Early morning hand-to-hand combat training. Then breakfast with grilled meat and some bread.
Noon, they would explore the island alone.
By evening, they would return and train with wooden swords.
At night, they would have a heavy meal of grilled meat, soup, and bread.
During all their meals, they would call the mythical beast and show how they consume everything. A portion of their food would also be left behind for the beast to consume.
It was a well-thought-out ploy to eliminate unpredictability from their life. By doing so, they provided a stable environment for the mythical beast to live and understand.
Like that, another day also passed.
—
Meanwhile, within the capital city of the Federation. Inside the Lin family’s main house. A young woman, not older than twenty, could be seen bedridden.
She was a beauty with pristine silver white hair, just like her sister’s.
Lin Yue walked up to the girl and held her hand.
This woke her up from her slumber. Her ashen face contorted as he opened her weary eyes.
"Sister?" A sickly, feeble voice escaped her lips.
"Yes, it’s me."
Lin Yue said when she noticed her unfocused gaze.
The young woman she was speaking to was her sister, Lin Hua. Also known as the crystal flower of the Lin family.
But this girl, who was once known for her beauty, now looked like a wilted flower. The mysterious illness she caught seemed to have drained all life out of her, leaving her at death’s door.
Lin Yue grasped the hand tightly.
It has been three years since her sister caught the disease.
She vividly remembers the incident that occurred one year ago, during a family event. Lin Hua, like her, was laughing and enjoying the day.
But the next second, she suddenly lost control of her body and fell down the stairs. That day was like a wake-up call, reminding everyone how serious the disease was.
Since that day, Lin Hua has been bedridden, unable to move. Furthermore, the disease was eating away at her body, even weakening her senses. Now, her eyes could barely see. So, Lin Yue had to sit next to her when she spoke.
Unknowingly, tears gushed out of her eyes.
"Sister, are you okay?" Lin Hua’s concerned voice was heard.
Although she couldn’t see what was happening, she noticed the slight tremble in her sister’s hand.
Lin Yue immediately wiped away the tears and replied.
"It’s nothing. Today, I came to you with good news. We found a medicine that might be able to cure you." Hiding her pain, Lin Yue said.
Although they don’t know it for sure, she was certainly optimistic that the dragon core could treat her sister. Unlike the medicine and methods they used before, it was not of scientific origin; it was certainly a little mystical. But that was exactly the reason for her optimism.
Science had already failed them, so miraculous medicine like dragon core was their only option.
"Medicine?" Lin Hua’s eyelids trembled.
She was a little hopeful. Unlike everyone else, her sister was not the kind to lie.
Hiding the shifting emotions beneath her calm voice, she asked.
"What medicine?"
"A dragon core."
"A dragon core!!" Lin Hua widened her eyes and gazed at the hazy form in her view.
She noticed the person nod silently.
A moment of joy washed over her. But the next second, she thought about the rarity of it. Immediately, a suffocating feeling swallowed her.
How desperately must her sister have searched to find a dragon core for her.
Her view blurred because of the tears that suddenly appeared.
"It must have been difficult," She said in a muffled voice, her fingers ever so slightly tightening around her sister’s.
Lin Hua’s words struck a chord, causing Lin Yue to desperately try and stop her tears.
Finally, she took a deep breath and said, "No, not at all. Just an A-ranked dragon. Your sister is strong now. She can catch something like that with her eyes closed."
Although she almost died, she hid the unnecessary details when she spoke.
"Did you catch it alone?"
"No, the elder helped and..." Lin Yue paused.
"Hm?" Lin Hua noticed the hesitation and gave her a questioning look. "What is it, sister?"
"Oh! Nothing. While hunting it, some other people also helped us," Lin Yue added.
"Is that so? Then I should thank all of them," Lin Hua said.
However, unlike Lin Yue, she did not entirely believe she could be cured. Although hope existed, she had been hopeful many times. To protect herself from the disappointment that comes later, she decided to believe it wouldn’t work.
"Hm...The elders are preparing the medicine. Your body is weak, and you cannot directly ingest it, so they invited someone to refine the core and make it suitable for you. Just wait a few hours. It will be done soon," Lin Yue said.
Lin Hua nodded.
Even if it doesn’t cure her, if she can relieve the burden on her sister by consuming it, she would do so without hesitation.
—
While the dragon core was being refined, Oliver and Root stood within the camp, holding two wooden swords.
It was time for their evening training.
"Are you ready?" Oliver asked.
"I was born ready."
"No, no one is born ready for the beating you are about to receive."
"I was."
"Let’s see if that is true."
Oliver thrust his sword forward.
Swish. It sliced the air and moved towards Root’s abdomen.
Root panicked.
Although he was allowed to use mana to protect his body, he knew he would feel pain.
Oliver’s sudden outburst was quick and precise.
So, in desperation, he kicked the ground, sucked his belly inwards and jumped backwards.
Oliver followed the thrust with a lunge, keeping the sword close to Root’s body.
"I don’t think you were ready."
He said and raised his sword, easily bypassing Root’s guard and hitting him on the chin.
"Ouu..."
Root felt his body turn weak.
He fell to the ground like a sack of potatoes, unable to control or stabilize his body.
His voice caught the attention of the mythical beast. It spun around in the sky, watching it all from the side curiously.
However, neither Oliver nor Root could see it. They were not wearing the VR headset when they trained.
Hiding his pain, Root sat on the ground for a while and stood up, raising his sword. He was ready for the next round.
Oliver didn’t use mana in the attack, so it was painful, but not unbearable.
"Are you ready?" Oliver asked again.
"I was ready before I was even born."
"..."
Oliver smiled. Young Root was bad at combat, but he lacked no balls.
Like that, their training continued.
