Chapter 145: Crooked idea 1
The red dot they saw through the VR headset was the mythical beast. It was floating a few meters in front of them, gazing directly at Root.
"Why is it here?" He asked, confusion evident in his voice.
"It seems to like your weird squeals." Oliver raised his hand, "Let me prove it to you." He aimed for Root’s head once again.
But this time, Root was prepared; he dodged the incoming fist by tilting his head to the side.
"Boss!" He shouted in exasperation. "If you want me to scream, shout, squeal, or cry, just say it. You don’t have to throw your fist around," He said.
"Oh! I could do that!"
As if he had just realized it, Oliver nodded.
Root released a vexed sigh.
At least, his boss was someone who could be influenced by words. He was relieved.
But while they talked, the mythical beast lost interest and was about to fly away.
Seeing this, Oliver motioned for Root and asked him to make the same sound again.
Reluctantly, with a hint of displeasure, Root lifted his head and made the same sound.
The squeal was not as emotional as before, but it still mimicked the tone and pitch.
Immediately, the beast, which was flying away, stopped mid-air.
The red dot trembled for a second and turned to look back at them.
"See," Oliver said, proud of his findings.
"Hm..."
Root nodded, amazed.
It indeed responded to his squeal. While he felt ashamed that he had to make the weird noise, the creature was indeed responding to him.
"Do it again."
"Okay."
"Ouu..."
"Wo...."
"Ooouuu..."
"Cooo..."
"Mooouuu."
From that moment on, Root tried out many different types of weird noises. Some of them were ignored, but his squeal that sounded like—Ahouuu—made it respond positively.
Suddenly, Oliver tapped Root’s shoulder. He looked at him emotionally and said,
"I knew you were talented. Not only are you a tech wizard, but you are also a fish whisperer. You are born to shine, Root.
Perhaps, fish whispering was your true calling all along."
His words were full of praise, and yet, Root felt like they had hidden jabs concealed in them.
Root gave him a side eye and promptly ignored it.
He had a gut feeling his boss was making fun of him.
And what exactly is a fish whisperer?
Is that some kind of occupation?
"Boss, I can see that it’s responding to my call, but what should we do with that?" He asked, trying to find ways to use the unexpected situation.
Oliver gazed at the red dot moving close to them.
By now, the creature seemed to be completely at ease and was flying close to them without any fear.
This was a good sign.
The mythical creature had let down its guard. Now, they can find a way to tame it differently, most likely taking the path of friendship.
"It seems to like you. Let’s keep it that way."
Although the beast came near them, it had yet to reveal its form by relinquishing its stealth. Oliver guessed from this that the beast was not fully at ease. It still had some caution.
Hence, doing anything that makes it wary would be bad. So, he decided to let it explore the area unrestricted.
It would be impossible to measure the thoughts of the beast, but he could guide it in a way that made it like them.
"Let it do its thing. Anything we do at this point will make it cautious. Let’s take our time and find a way to befriend it," Oliver muttered.
Root nodded.
He had the same thought.
Fortune was with them, and luckily, they took the first step in the right direction. The sound he made seemed to have attracted the beast and caused it to let down its guard.
But it was not enough to tame it.
"We are going to stay here for a couple of weeks, right?" He asked.
"Yes."
"Hm."
Both of them nodded, understanding what the other meant.
They went silent for a few seconds.
While Oliver glanced at the beast silently, a thought sprouted in Root’s mind.
Suddenly, his eyes widened, and he looked at Oliver.
How could he have overlooked this fact?
His eyes drilled into Oliver’s body and asked, "Boss, why are you not making the noise? I think it’s possible for you to also imitate the squeal."
Oliver was sitting right beside Root. Without turning his neck, he silently rotated his eyes to glance at Root.
Once he saw his piercing eyes, he immediately turned to the other side.
"BOSS!"
Oliver ignored it.
"GUILD LEADER!"
He hid his smirk and turned a little more to the side.
"Mr. OLIVER."
"Pufft..." Finally, Oliver couldn’t hold back and erupted into laughter.
Then he giggled for a while, avoiding Root’s gaze.
Further explanation was not needed. Root knew what it meant.
He pouted in rightful indignation.
Oliver obviously thought it was stupid. He didn’t want to imitate the sound and look bad.
But he still let Root perform it.
’Ah! This person...’ Root sighed.
Soon, time passed by. They finished their dinner and returned to the boat to sleep.
But before they returned, Oliver placed some grilled dragon meat on a plate outside.
He wanted to see if the mythical creature would try it.
—
The next day.
The meat on the plate was untouched.
The beast seemed to have ignored it entirely.
Oliver spoke about it with Root. They both agreed to wait until the beast took the initiative to interact with them before finding a way to tame it.
Although a little bit of dragon meat was wasted, they decided to use more in the future. But this time, they wanted to place both raw and cooked meat side by side.
Why?
Obviously, to attract the creature and make it understand that both were food.
So, what was the significance of putting cooked meat along with the raw one?
It was the crooked idea of Oliver to make it dependent on them.
