Chapter 459: -1- Journey to the Royal Capital_2
Some carriages with clearly visible noble family crests on their sides didn’t make way, and this even included some merchant caravans loaded with goods.
Many of these caravans also had knights as escorts, and Charlotte even sensed a transcendent aura emanating from some of the knights.
It was obvious that these caravans all had noble backgrounds, and Charlotte even spotted several Kingdom great family crests that she had studied hard to recognize.
Unlike the pedestrians, the people in these caravans only curiously sized up the luxurious carriage of the Castel family and the unfamiliar crest before paying no further attention.
However, those knights escorting the caravans couldn’t help but continuously glance over at Charlotte’s escorting troops, or more precisely, at the exquisite equipment of the Castel knights.
As for the transcendent knights, their gaze remained fixated on the knights surrounding Charlotte’s carriage, their faces revealing surprise and doubt.
The reason being, many of the knights accompanying Charlotte were also transcendents, and there were even a few tier-entering men among them.
The Mireya nobility would also judge the situation by watching others, and to make an impression for this journey to the Royal Capital and to avoid trouble from any short-sighted individuals, Charlotte had brought along her most elite personal guard knights and even taken out the best knight armor.
She was attending the meeting and negotiation in the capacity of the victorious party and a newly appointed vassal; from the beginning, she never intended to be low-key.
After glancing at the outer scenery of Lutecia, Charlotte lowered the carriage curtain and quietly waited to enter the city.
However, just as the Castel caravan was about to cross the stone bridge over the moat, the sound of galloping horse hooves mixed with screams and curses suddenly came from behind and to the side of the caravan.
Charlotte only felt the carriage pause slightly, followed by curses from her coachman.
She frowned slightly and lifted the curtain again, asking,
"What happened?"
"Count, it’s the cavalry! We were supposed to cross the bridge, but suddenly some cavalry cut into our line and rushed ahead!"
The coachman said angrily.
"Cavalry?"
Charlotte raised her eyebrows slightly.
She looked out of the carriage window and saw two rows of armored knights draped in grey cloaks, also fully armed, overtaking the Castel line and rushing to occupy the stone bridge leading to the city gate ahead of Charlotte’s line.
They stood side by side, imposingly, and their advance was unimpeded. The recent screams came from pedestrians they had collided with, and even now cries could be heard, clearly indicating someone had been injured.
However, these knights seemed not to care, not even glancing at the people they had knocked down. They rudely instructed other pedestrians to move the injured to the side of the road.
A few knights who were blocking the Castel caravan even whistled at Charlotte’s guard knights, making a provocative gesture, which elicited angry stares from Charlotte’s men.
At the very front of the caravan, the guard captain, Baron Sharon, was on horseback, frowning as he conversed with the knight who was clearly the leader of the other party.
The opposing lead knight’s attitude was arrogant, but when his gaze fell upon the troop of the Castel personal guard knights, he became somewhat more serious.
When Charlotte’s eyes landed on the noble insignia on the chest of the other party, she was briefly surprised.
It was too familiar, having dealt with it quite recently.
That was the crest of the Gaston family, identical to the badge of Count Gaston’s family, whom she had transformed into a Blood Servant.
The only difference, perhaps, was that the insignia of the other party was surrounded by a gold border, while Count Gaston’s family crest had a silver border.
Charlotte intended to use her magic power to listen in on their conversation, but before she could lean in, Baron Sharon had finished his discussion with the other party.
He soothed his knights and then rode his horse over to Charlotte.
"What is the matter?"
Charlotte asked.
"Count, it’s a cavalry troop from Duke Gaston’s family; members of their family are entering the city,"
Baron Sharon said with an unpleasant expression.
"Members of their family? Not the Duke himself?"
Charlotte’s heart stirred slightly.
"Unclear, they didn’t specify, only demanding that we make way,"
Sharon shook his head.
"Tsk, they sure carry themselves with great pomp,"
Charlotte clicked her tongue.
Baron Sharon hesitated:
"Count, then we..."
"No matter, let them go first. Send someone to check on the person they just hit. Take a priest with you, and don’t let it lead to a fatality."
Charlotte said.
Duke Gaston was one of the nine dukes of the Kingdom, and given that the convoy was so reckless, even if it wasn’t the Duke himself, it was likely an important figure from the Gaston family.
Although Charlotte wasn’t planning to keep a low profile on this trip, she also didn’t plan to make enemies with other Great Nobles before figuring out the situation.
After all, it was just a matter of being cut in line. Waiting a bit longer didn’t matter that much to Charlotte.
And before long, Baron Sharon returned and reported the condition of the pedestrian who had been hit:
"The injured person is not seriously hurt, there’s no danger to their life. It seems the Cavalry also pulled their punches. We’ve already had our accompanying priests help with the treatment. After the Healing Divine Arts, they should recover in a few days."
Hearing Sharon’s report, Charlotte nodded slightly:
"Good, that will do."
At this time, the Gaston family’s convoy also arrived, escorted by the knights.
The convoy was impressive, even more so than the Castel family’s. The large carriages were the ultimate in luxury, and even the horses pulling them were Dragon Scale Horses with a Dragon Descendant bloodline.
However, just when Charlotte thought the Gaston family’s convoy would go straight into the city gates, it stopped upon passing the Castel’s convoy.
Then, from the carriage closest to Charlotte’s and the most luxuriously decorated in the entire Gaston convoy, the curtains were suddenly pulled back, and a young, frivolous voice was heard:
"The black Northern Land Hawk... Castel family?"
Charlotte looked over and saw a young Noble, around twenty-something years old with handsome features, sitting inside the other carriage.
He was flanked on either side by two beautiful maidservants with alluring figures and scantily clad, their semi-pointed ears proclaiming their Half-Elf status, while in their hands, they held goblets filled with fine wine and peeled fruit.
Seeing Charlotte turn her head, a look of amazement flashed across the young noble’s face, but he quickly recovered his composure.
He whistled and chuckled frivolously:
"So you’re Charlotte of Castel? The jewel of Bold, the yet-to-be-recognized Saintess by the Holy Royal Court?"
Without waiting for Charlotte to respond, he looked her over and went on to say to himself:
"It seems that sometimes rumors can be quite true. The jewel of Bold... indeed, you live up to your reputation. You could even be called the jewel of the New Moon."
"So beautiful, yet you’re pledged to remain unmarried to the deity... such a pity... truly such a pity."
"Ha ha ha ha ha ha..."
Charlotte raised her eyebrows slightly, intending to ask for the man’s identity, but the young noble was already laughing heartily as he let the curtain fall and the convoy moved on.
In a cloud of dust, the Gaston family’s convoy entered the city gate under the knight’s escort.
"Let’s go as well."
Charlotte said.
The Armored Knights looked on with dissatisfaction at the direction in which the Gaston family’s convoy had departed, cursing a few times, and then escorted Charlotte towards the Royal Capital’s city gates.
However, just as the Castel family’s convoy was about to step onto the stone bridge, they were stopped by the guards at the gate.
"Which family’s convoy are you? The Royal Capital is a restricted area; armed knights may not enter."
