Chapter 458: -1- Journey to the Royal Capital

If one were to ask which city on the Star Moon Peninsula is the most famous, it would undoubtedly be Lutecia, the Royal Capital of the New Moon Kingdom.

As one of the oldest cities in the West Yonette region, Lutecia had already been one of the many capitals of the ancient Bloodline Dynasty during the period of Bloodline Royal Authority. With the establishment of the Yonette Empire about eleven hundred years ago, it once became the Imperial Capital of the empire.

Nine hundred years ago, the Yonette Empire faced a succession crisis that split the nation in two, forming the Eastern Yonette Empire and the Western Yonette Empire.

The Eastern Yonette Empire soon perished in a disaster thereafter and turned into the demon-infested Eastern Yonette Black Land.

The Western Yonette Empire has persisted to this day, but it too has experienced division, extinction, and resurrection throughout its history...

The New Moon Kingdom was established during the period of division in the Western Yonette Empire.

After the division of the Yonette Empire, the ancestor of the Valva Family, then the court prime minister of the Western Yonette Empire, seized power anew by leveraging the waning royal authority, split off roughly one third of the northwestern territory of the Western Yonette Empire to establish his own kingdom where he declared himself king, which is now the New Moon Kingdom.

Naturally, Lutecia also became the capital of the New Moon Kingdom.

It is precisely because of such a history that even today, the residents of the New Moon Kingdom consider themselves to be the purest descendants of Yonette and fiercely compete with the reestablished Western Yonette Empire over who holds the genuine Yonette sovereignty.

Charlotte learned all these histories from the Church’s historical documents.

The Mireya nobles rarely record history, but the Church of the Holy Royal Court has a good practice of doing so, which allowed Charlotte to thoroughly understand the past of this world.

Of course, even the Holy Royal Court only has detailed records starting with the founding of the Yonette Empire.

As for the earlier period of the Bloodline Royal Authority, possibly due to certain taboos, or perhaps indeed a lack of records, much of it has already become legend passed down orally.

Perhaps some longevity species like Elves and giant dragons still have memories from that period.

But humans are humans, and they are they.

Elves and giant dragons, who always look down upon short-lived species, are not interested in human history.

And as for the periods even before the Blood Moon Era, like the Mythical Era and the Elf Era, it’s feared that even in the records of the elves and dragons, a lot has already been buried in the past...

After all, even the dragon, who lives longer than elves, has a maximum lifespan of only about seventeen or eighteen hundred years, which is far insufficient to experience the past two thousand years.

The only possible "walking books of mythical history" might just be those Bloodline from the Ancient Era who survived.

Unfortunately, relying on these beings, who spend the majority of their time sleeping in coffins, is sometimes even less useful than visiting ancient ruins to look at murals...

Enough digression, back to the present.

The Royal Capital Lutecia is located in the central part of the New Moon Kingdom, approximately half a month’s journey from Castel.

With less than a month before the central council meeting, Charlotte had to reduce the number and duration of visits and stays with nobles along the way to save time.

The journey was very smooth; more than a hundred fully armed Armored Knights escorted her, and no one dared to cross Charlotte, not even the bandits or robbers who, upon seeing the convoy of Castel, would carefully detour around.

And about twenty days later, Charlotte finally saw the towering walls of Lutecia, the Royal Capital of the New Moon Kingdom.

It was indeed an impressively tall wall...

The massive city gate, almost twenty meters high, made of sturdy stone and iron components, stood like a giant, declaring the kingdom’s authority to all who passed.

The shimmering moat was very wide, possibly exceeding fifty meters, connected to the surrounding Kena River and even navigable by boats.

As the capital of New Moon Kingdom, Lutecia was several times more prosperous than North Port, with a population nearing one million, second only to the Holy City of the Church Authority Country.

On the main road leading to the city gate, the traffic of carriages, pedestrians, travelers, and merchant convoys was endless and busier than the busiest periods at North Port’s docks.

This was the bustling scene Charlotte’s convoy met as it impressively approached.

The Castel family’s convoy was certainly striking.

Twenty luxuriously decorated carriages and over a hundred fully armed Armored Knights immediately drew countless gazes, showcasing the prominence of the Great Nobles.

Nearby pedestrians, travelers, and small merchant caravans instinctively cleared the way, letting Castel’s convoy pass first.

Of course, that was just making way.

Unlike in the Northern Land where people might stop to bow or elsewhere where they curiously scrutinized, few did so here.

Most merchant convoys and pedestrians, after giving a few extra glances at the Armored Knights, kept their distance and paid no further attention.

This was quite normal.

Lutecia had plenty of nobles; all shapes and sizes were ubiquitous, and walking down the street, throwing a stone could likely hit a Baron or Viscount. Thus, people’s reverence for nobles was not as deep-rooted as in other places.

Luxurious noble convoys as opulent as that of the Castel Family were commonplace in Lutecia, Charlotte even saw quite a few just outside the city gate.

Charlotte even suspected that what really made people voluntarily give way was the imposing presence of the hundred-plus formidable Armored Knights.

And besides, not all convoys made way upon seeing Castel’s procession.
