Chapter 354: -107- Trapped in Nisi
This was an alchemy workshop piled high with all sorts of magic materials.
Much seen magic tool tables on the continent could be found here, with bookshelves filled with volumes upon volumes chronicling alchemy and magic pattern engraving.
One mage and alchemist after another, clad in mage robes, flitted between work stations, creating a variety of magic gadgets or inscribing enchanted weaponry, never stopping for a rest.
In a corner of the alchemy workshop, completed magical equipment had almost formed a small mountain.
At a glance, it was nearly all armor and weapons.
And not far from the magical equipment, on a chair covered with genuine velvet, a fat black cat was lazily leaning against a soft pillow.
It held its head high, leisurely chewing on meticulously prepared dried fish while indolently watching the busy mages and alchemists.
It seemed quite content.
Well, if it didn’t have that metal collar inscribed with markings around its neck, a collar that was also attached to a chain fixed beside the work stations because of an enchantment, perhaps... it really would be.
From time to time, an alchemist or mage would approach the shackled black cat with a frown, holding an unfinished enchanted object, seeking advice.
Their postures were more respectful than the last, their tones more sincere.
"Mr. Nisi, regarding the inscription of this kind, how can I achieve a perfect balance between the reaction of the Water Element and the Fire Element?"
"Lord Nisi, between Mithril and refined gold, which one is more suitable as the core component for Magic Energy Superconduction?"
"Lord Nisi, I have enchanted this armor three times, but each time it has failed, and I have been unable to pinpoint the reason. Could you please have a look for me?"
On the velvet cushion, the black cat lazily shifted its position.
With its amber eyes barely glancing at the various materials brought by the mages and alchemists, the black cat nonchalantly said,
"Reaction balance between the Water Element and the Fire Element? Tsk, you need to blend in the fluid from the Anti-Demon Flower in your inscription. Without blending, you want balance? Heh, you’re lucky it’s not exploding!"
"Mithril? Refined gold? You must be dumb. Have you been poring over third-rate alchemy and magic books all day?"
"Idiot! Always buried in books! Mithril and refined gold can indeed serve as the main materials for Magic Energy Superconductive components, but only if the item already possesses a stable magic energy conduction. But look at what you’re trying to enchant—a sword of material that’s not even pure! In this case, you must use Star Rock, which has a milder magic energy effect!"
"Oh my... you managed to enchant that three times? Just toss it! It’s hopeless! You’re even stupider than the last guy!"
"How many times have I said it? Not everything is suitable for enchantment. Your armor has been repaired so many times, it’s long lost the potential for enchantment! Engraving on it is as hard as carving on your own ass!"
"Go tell the people of the Legris Family, if they can’t afford it, don’t even think about turning all their equipment into enchanted gear! With their spare money for materials, they might as well hire a few more mercenaries from Eastern Yonette!"
The black cat’s attitude was far from pleasant, even downright snide, belittling the magicians and alchemists who came for guidance.
However, the mages and alchemists who sought advice seemed not to care.
Or rather, they were all ears, taking in the black cat’s varied suggestions, even taking out paper and pen to jot down its critiques.
Every so often, one could see a mage or alchemist have an aha moment after the black cat sharply criticized, mocked, and cursed.
They bowed excitedly to the black cat and then returned to their stations, elated, to continue their attempts.
The black cat, meanwhile, chewed on its dried fish, casting a sidelong glance at the bustling crowd, muttering to itself about "a bunch of novices with less than third-rate skills."
Until a piercing bell rang out, the working mages and alchemists finally stopped their tasks.
Apart from those craftsmen whose work had reached a critical part, most instinctively took out their mealtime utensils and swarmed out of the workshop.
Seeing this spectacle, the black cat curled its lip, its expression growing even more disdainful,
"Can’t do anything right, but champion eaters..."
It wasn’t until the vast majority of mages and alchemists had left the workshop, leaving only those spellcasters completely engrossed in their work, virtually forgetting everything around them, that the black cat put away its contemptuous gaze.
Its languorous appearance vanished in an instant, and its plump body suddenly stood up. With two chubby paws, it grasped desperately at the metal collar and chain around its neck, trying to rip them off.
However, the chain, made of some unknown material, wouldn’t budge no matter how hard it tried.
The Black Cat refused to accept defeat. Glancing around, its gaze soon fell upon a half-finished enchanted dagger on the workbench, likely forgotten by its maker.
Then, with some effort, it scooted over, awkwardly reached out a paw to grab the dagger, and began sawing at the chain that imprisoned it, biting down on the handle.
"If I were you, I wouldn’t bother with such futile efforts."
An icy voice suddenly pierced the silence, startling the Black Cat, Nisi.
Its fur puffed up in an instant, the dagger falling from its mouth with a clink, as wide, alert feline eyes scanned towards the workshop’s entrance.
There, at the doorway, stood a black-haired girl who appeared to be about fourteen or fifteen years old, her arms crossed as she stood there.
She was dressed in black armor, her crimson pupils utterly still, her delicate face devoid of expression.
Seeing the girl, the Mages and Alchemists busy in the workshop stopped their work and hastily stood up:
"Lord... Lord Odosia!"
They bowed respectfully, their stammering voices tinged with a hint of fear.
The girl glanced at them indifferently, not speaking, but stepped forward, striding towards Nisi.
Watching the girl approach, Nisi involuntarily shrank back, its voice filled with wariness,
"Is... Is it you? What are you doing here?"
"I’ve come to check on our captive, I heard some folks were making quite the impression in the workshop, winning over many of our seasoned Magic Craftsmen..."
The girl said with a note of implication.
As she spoke, her gaze fell upon the scuffed chain around Nisi’s neck and the dagger lying beside its paw, speaking with profound meaning,
"It seems some still haven’t given up on their plans to escape, perhaps it’s time for another lesson."
Hearing her words, Nisi’s expression changed, and with a swat of his paw, he sent the dagger flying,
"Escape? No, no... misunderstanding! It’s all a misunderstanding! Not at all! I was just helping them evaluate their work! Um... isn’t that what you wanted me to do?"
The girl looked at him intently and did not reply.
She approached Nisi, bent down to pick up the dagger he had just knocked away, and after examining it for a moment, said,
"Opposing elements composite Enchantment, I heard... that’s a lost art of Enchantment. Did you teach them that?"
Nisi coughed lightly and, seeing that the girl seemed not intent on probing into his recent escape attempt, gradually relaxed.
He resumed his haughty demeanor, nodding slightly,
"Of course, Master Cat knows many things. A casual spill of knowledge is enough for those folks to ponder over!"
However, at that moment, the girl suddenly shifted the subject, her gaze turned deep as she looked at Nisi,
"Yet, as far as I know, this kind of Enchantment has been lost in Mireya for nearly three hundred years, disappearing with its inventor, the Legendary Mage Nicholas..."
"I’ve been observing you for many days, and it seems you possess many ancient enchantment techniques, and some alchemy skills that are quite similar to those of the Nicholas School in West Yonette."
"Are you... an Esoteric Mage from the Nicholas School?"
After hearing the girl’s words, Nisi suddenly wore a bemused expression,
"Hm? What are you talking about? What School? What Nicholas?"
"Uh... I learned everything from books, I’m just a little talking cat, I don’t know anything about this School or any Nicholas!"
