Chapter 93: Sit on a throne of lies
"Max, that’s not true. He cares about you a lot." Andrew started, but seeing the stubborn look on his face, he knew he wasn’t going to get anywhere with him on this topic. He’d have to go slow, ease him into it.
Andrew wasn’t going to give up on Maxwell believing his family cared about him. Especially after he’d been given the son-in-law treatment.
"On a different note, I’ve made a jab at your Father, and I don’t know how long I’ll be able to keep it up." Andrew said. Maxwell’s expression dipped into confusion as he stared at Andrew. He still had his finger in his mouth.
"A jab at my Father? About what?"
"About how Amir is pregnant and he doesn’t know." Maxwell’s eyes went wide, and he gasped. His blue eyes filled with surprise.
"Andrew, did you hold knowledge over my Father? You? I’m so proud! I’m going to message Ben right now!" He quickly moved, getting on his tippy toes and kissing Andrew on the cheek before pulling his phone out and typing away.
Andrew stood in shock, unsure why that had made him so happy. But he’d take it.
"Hey, I can be conniving when the moment calls for it." Maxwell was mid message when Andrew spoke, defending himself. Maxwell glanced up, his gaze slightly pitying.
"I know you can be threatening, and bold, but I wouldn’t put the word conniving in the glossary I would use to describe you." Andrew felt slightly offended.
"That feels uncalled for. I can...I can lie." Andrew declared and Maxwell’s look only filled with more pity. He finished typing and crossed his arms, giving Andrew a one over.
"Oh, I know you can, Baby. Everyone is capable of lying. I just don’t think your lies are classified as lying to do something immoral." Andrew didn’t know why this felt like a dig, but it did.
Andrew had lied. In fact, he was still lying to Maxwell. and Maxwell had no idea. Because he was lying.
"Maxwell, I can lie that way." Andrew said, swallowing thickly. Maxwell, disbelieving, met Andrew’s shaking gaze and nodded slowly.
"Uh huh. Of course. If you’re so insistent, then who am I to say you can’t? Are you conniving, Andrew? Are you concocting a plan to hurt or harm someone?" He was teasing him. Andrew could tell by the way he was speaking, but Andrew only felt guilty.
"W-Well, I’ve been lying to you this whole time." Maxwell’s eyes widened and Andrew stuttered. "N-Not the whole time. Just the time I’ve been back. Since...it happened." Maxwell remained quiet as Andrew stuttered and slipped over his own words. He was worrying his hands, gripping them tightly.
Andrew had no idea his pheromones had spiked. Not in a suppressing way, but in a way that made Maxwell want to comfort him. He was scared. Andrew was scared that Maxwell was going to be very, very upset about his lie.
His Father had said that he was going to be very angry. Maybe even livid.
Andrew looked away from him, swallowing again. God, he would do anything for some water right about now.
"I-I didn’t tell the whole truth." Andrew admitted softly. "There was another person besides...her." Andrew said, glancing at Maxwell to gauge his reaction and found that Maxwell was staring at him blankly. Andrew didn’t know what that meant. So, still nervous, he continued speaking. Rambling, really. "H-Her name is Heather. She was a scientist like h-her. She was...she was meaner. She didn’t like me. I knew it would make you upset if I told you that so I kept it from you. I know you’re probably mad, and I understand why. It’s hard to trust someone after they lied. And-" Maxwell’s soft, smaller hands touched Andrew’s mouth for the second time that day. Instead of going into his mouth, they covered it.
Andrew, confused and worried, glanced down at the smaller man and wasn’t expecting the soft way Maxwell looked at him.
"She was worse?" He asked, and he nodded. Gently moving Maxwell’s hand to the side, he spoke.
"She...was the one who left a lot of the marks on me. T-Tracey was nicer." Maxwell’s brows knit together, but he didn’t chastise Andrew for speaking her name this time. Andrew had no idea if that was a good sign or not. His heart was racing in his chest and he felt sweaty.
"And why are you telling me this now? What made you break your silence?" Maxwell asked softly, his tone surprisingly neutral. Andrew gulped.
"I...I felt angry." He muttered, and Maxwell shifted on his feet. His gaze never leaving Andrew’s face.
"Angry?" He prompted, and Andrew nodded. He was still fidgeting with his fingers, squeezing and plumping them absentmindedly. A distraction for his mind as he worried if Maxwell was going to explode on him. Andrew was bracing himself for sleeping on the couch.
"Yeah. For the first time, I was angry about what they had done to me. And I understood. I understood why you were seeking vengeance. And then I felt bad for keeping any information from you. Plus, your Father overheard the fact that there had been two Doctors there and he told me, warned me, that you were going to be upset about it. I didn’t...I believed him, but I just thought it was better if you didn’t know. You were already so angry and upset, I didn’t want to make you more angry and upset." Andrew said softly. He was shaking. He didn’t realise when it happened until Maxwell put his hands on him.
Maxwell gripped Andrew’s shoulders, his fingers firm, steady. His breathing was normal, unlike Andrew who felt like he was on the verge of a panic attack. He knew that he had just been taking a big game about being conniving, but this was different.
This was his partner. The man he had in his life. Who he wanted to have for the rest of his life.
"Andrew, Baby, I already knew that there had to be someone else involved." Andrew’s heart froze. The soft way Maxwell said it made it feel like his heart stopped beating. The way Maxwell held him, softly, but with a firm hand, told Andrew that Maxwell was comforting him.
"Y-You knew?" Andrew whispered, and Maxwell nodded solemnly.
"There was no way she could do what she did on her own. She kidnapped you from a cafe. Where lots of people could have been. The staff knew you, Andrew. How the hell did she get them past you? With help." He said, and Andrew felt like his chest was caving in. All this worry, and Maxwell already knew? "Admittedly, I didn’t know their name yet, so you did give me a clue, but I knew that...that someone else had to be involved." Maxwell’s expression tightened. "She was worse?" He repeated again, and Andrew gulped.
"She...you don’t want to know what she did." Andrew said, and Maxwell’s expression grew distraught.
"Did she harm you? Did she...touch you, Andrew?" Andrew shook his head aggressively.
"No! No, she didn’t. I think she hated that they had to use me. I think she was either an omega, like Tracey, or a beta. No, as I’m thinking about it, I think she was a beta." Andrew exhaled shakily. "She had no scent the more my senses awoke." Andrew admitted. Maxwell’s expression didn’t change.
"Andrew, you weren’t angry before this?" He asked, and Andrew nodded. He looked away from Maxwell’s gaze, aware that he should have been angry before now, but it just hadn’t...triggered. Part of it had to do with the denial, while another part had been...
"If I got angry, it meant that everything that they wanted to come true, did. I just didn’t want to give her that power over me." Maxwell hung his head, and Andrew wasn’t sure why until he raised it again.
There was such a flurry of emotions in his gaze. Fear, anger, hatred, pain, sympathy, and sadness.
"I would never, ever be angry at you for something like this. I’m upset, but I’m only upset because you felt like telling me was a burden to me. That is never the case. I care too much for you to consider your feelings, and thoughts as a burden. Especially then. Especially now. Fuck, did Dr. Smith know?" Andrew didn’t say anything, and that made Maxwell swear again. "I can’t believe this. My Father and Dr. Smith knew?" Andrew shrugged.
"It felt like something I shouldn’t keep solely to myself. Honestly, I worried I was going to block it out in its entirety. It isn’t something completely off the books. I blocked out a lot of my childhood. At least the parts where my father was involved." Maxwell’s expression didn’t get better. He reached up, grabbing Andrew’s face with both of his hands and pulling him down until their faces were closer.
"Andrew Knox. If you ever keep something from me again because you think it will be a burden to me or upset me, I will get upset. So upset I might even cry sad tears. Do you want that?" Andrew shook his head, and Maxwell gave a weak, watery smile. "Good. Now kiss me. I need to make sure you’re okay."
