Chapter 92: A guilty conscience

Mr. Beckett was pouting as they left the dental office while Jenny was gloating. She’d already messaged Kim that she had won Christmas eve without any context, and Kim had responded with two thumbs up. Andrew was tired, his gums hurt, and he just wanted to get back home.

Andrew was having a hard time wrapping his head around these two people in his life behaving this way. Andrew had viewed Mr. Beckett as a bit more of a stoic man. More subtle, but he wasn’t behaving that way at all.

Jenny? He hadn’t had enough interactions with her yet to get a read for her personality. She did remind him of his Mom though. The way she was able to guilt trip him without doing much was very reminiscent of his Mom. It was a good and a bad memory.

Michael gently led Andrew towards the car he’d gotten in to get here, while the other two headed towards two different cars. It was strange to Andrew how easily he’d adjusted to being driven around by professionals considering he used to take transit or buy taxis. Was that something he should be concerned about? It wasn’t as if he couldn’t drive.

Cars were just...expensive. And he cared about the environment, so he normally took transit to limit emissions.

"Well, thank you two for coming and helping me out. Mr. Beckett, I will get back at you for paying for my visit." Andrew warned, and Mr. Beckett laughed at Andrew’s stiff tone. His grey eyes sparkled like his son’s as he stared at him.

"Mmm. I look forward to it. I doubt you will be able to come up with much without Maxwell’s help. I wonder which way he’ll target me?" He joked, and Andrew smirked.

"Hmm, well, I do know some information that I doubt you know yet. But, it’s also not mine to say." Mr. Beckett’s eyes widened as Andrew opened the back door of the car waiting for him. He smiled at Jenny. "Tell Kim I say hello." Andrew called as he got into the backseat. Mr. Beckett was still confused, his brows furrowed.

"What on earth do you know that I don’t know, Andrew?" He asked, and Andrew smirked.

"Hmm. I’m not feeling very...open right now, so I guess you’ll just have to wait." Andrew teased. Even Michael seemed interested and confused as Andrew teased the older man.

Mr. Beckett huffed, glanced away from Andrew before turning his gaze back to him. He shook his head with a grin.

"I suppose I’ve earned this. Alright, Andrew, I’ll bite. What is it?" Andrew laughed, shaking his head. His brown eyes were warm as he looked over the older man.

"I just told you I’m not going to tell you. Good luck worrying about what I know!" Andrew closed the door, waving with a grin. Andrew wasn’t aware of how silly he looked, so he couldn’t understand why both Jenny and Mr. Beckett covered their mouths as he waved at them.

Michael crawled into the car on the other side with a sigh.

"Alright. Now that that has been dealt with, are you ready to face Maxwell? I haven’t messaged him yet. This will be the first one where he will be up to date on what you’ve gone through." Andrew felt any sense of humour leaving his system.

He was going to be in big trouble. Sharing a look with Michael, he swallowed.

They were going to be in big trouble.

Arriving back at the house, Michael made sure that Andrew made it inside safely. So did the security that traveled with them as well, but Michael was a bit more thorough.

He made sure Andrew was okay, that he had a list of foods that he should eat and what he should avoid, and let him know Maxwell was on the way. Andrew would have felt very cared for if it wasn’t for the fear hidden in the depths of Michael’s eyes.

He wanted to get out of here before Maxwell got home.

Feeling pity for the man, Andrew let him escape quickly. He had made this bed, Andrew would lie in it alone.

That, and the way that Maxwell’s Father had looked at him earlier remained with him. Maybe it was time...to tell Maxwell the whole truth. Enough time had passed, and Andrew finally understood some of the emotions Maxwell must have been feeling until now.

The rage and desire for vengeance.

It was only five minutes after Michael had left that the front door slammed open and a panicked, flushed faced Maxwell stumbled into the house.

"Andrew? Are you alright?" Maxwell did not appear well, and that only worried Andrew.

"Max? Why are you so flushed? Are you alright?" Andrew got up from the couch where he had only just settled, but stood still when Maxwell stumbled towards him, gripping onto the sweater Andrew was wearing.

"When Michael told me something was wrong, I felt my heart stop. Are you alright? He said you already went to the dentist. Did you go alone?" The fact that Maxwell was showing such open concern told Andrew just how shaken up he was.

Andrew wrapped his arms around Maxwell, pulling the smaller man close and hugging him. pressing his nose into his hair, he inhaled slowly, deeply, and felt his body relax.

"It was awful. I panicked pretty bad, but Michael brought the handkerchief with your scent in it. I was so scared something was wrong with me, and thankfully the x-rays came out...normal? The dentist said she had little experience in this area, but as a dentist, everything looked good." Maxwell tilted his head back, as if to look up at him and Andrew held him in place.

"Andrew?" Maxwell’s voice was questioning, and Andrew released a shaky sigh.

"I look...disgusting right now, and I really don’t want you to see me this way." Andrew admitted. He hadn’t seen himself in a mirror, but he could guess. He’d seen people with missing teeth before. This was going to wound his pride until they came in.

His new...alpha teeth.

God, he felt like he sounded like an idiot even thinking that.

"Disgusting? There is no way that my handsome boyfriend could ever look disgusting." Maxwell protested, maybe even a little bit angrily, and Andrew sighed.

"Well, you’ve said it. You can’t laugh at me now or I’ll cry." Andrew warned before allowing Maxwell to actually look at him past his anxiety.

He stood, staring at the outside of Andrew, not noticing any changes. He was frowning with great concentration before he reached up, and moved Andrew’s lips.

He gasped when he realised that there were two, large gaps in Andrew’s mouth.

"Both fell out?" Maxwell asked, shocked. Andrew nodded.

"It was awful." Andrew admitted, grimacing as he remembered his reaction. "I...I think I’m a really bad patient." Andrew admitted before sighing. "Michael should get paid more, even though I don’t know what he’s getting paid right now." Andrew muttered and Maxwell waved a hand dismissively, his other still half in Andrew’s mouth.

"He gets some of your baked goods. That’s enough compensation." He said absently, his gaze focused on Andrew’s mouth. "Does it hurt?" He asked and Andrew shrugged.

"A little. My gums feel sore. I think I remember this feeling from when I was a kid." Andrew told him, and Maxwell’s expression remained worried.

"Oh gosh, the foods you’re going to be able to eat are limited now. Did Dr. Smith give you a list?" Andrew nodded, and gestured behind Maxwell. Maxwell turned enough so that he could notice the paper on the coffee table before turning his gaze back to Andrew. "My sweet Baby must be feeling awful. Should I order in some soup and we can have a calm night in? Anything you want to do?"

Maxwell was being very sweet. Andrew didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t what he was expecting. He was expecting a lecture. For going out without telling him. The sweet Maxwell?

It was nice, but only made him feel guilty.

"Your Dad was there, and so was Mrs. Proctor." Andrew blurted out, and Maxwell blinked. It took him several seconds to process what Andrew had said, and when he did, confusion crossed his pretty face.

"My father was there? Why?" Andrew shrugged, his cheeks slightly pink.

"Uh, well, I think he just wanted to be support? He called Jenny so that she could be there too." Maxwell was silent for a long moment, before he dropped his head.

"Wow. I didn’t expect him to like you more than he likes me." Andrew’s heart dropped to the floor hearing the way Maxwell so easily said those words. He was so nonchalant about it as well. Andrew’s heart broke, especially given how many times he’d witnessed the two interact. Clearly, there had to be something that Andrew had missed or hadn’t been told, because Andrew could tell that Maxwell’s Father cared a great deal for him.

Andrew knew that Maxwell’s thoughts weren’t true, but how on earth was he going to convince Maxwell of that? When both he and Maxwell knew how stubborn he was?
