Chapter 90: It’s just a normal visit
"Andrew. Andrew! Deep, deep breaths. Come on. You can do that for me." Andrew’s vision swam as panic filled him. The way Michael was talking to him felt like he was three worlds away. He knew that Michael was speaking to him, but he couldn’t get his body to respond.
His body wasn’t responding to any of his commands. He could barely see even though he knew he had glasses on. The raspy, harsh breaths that were filling his ears had to be his own, but he couldn’t believe it. Did he normally sound like that?
"Fuck. Alright, get one of the guards. He has a plastic bag. I need it." Michael ordered, and Andrew felt his hands on his shoulders. "Keep trying to breathe. In and out. Come on Andy." Andrew wanted to tell him that he was doing his best, that his body wasn’t responding to him, but he couldn’t even do that.
"Dr. Smith. Is...this what you were talking about?" It was the woman from before. The dental assistant.
"Ah, perfect. Give that to me." In a second, Andrew heard a bag open before a familiar, comforting scent filled his nostrils. "Slow, deep breaths, Andy. That’s it. There we go." Andrew’s vision cleared up, and the first emotion he felt after the panic subsided was an overwhelming amount of embarrassment.
Michael was grinning at him as he held up the handkerchief that was covered in Maxwell’s scent. He knew he must have a strange appearance. Only a few seconds ago he must have been pale, and sweating, and now he was flushed. Andrew took the handkerchief from Michael, his hands still shaking and kept it against his nose. Michael chuckled.
"If that’s what works, let’s use it. Can you get into the chair now?" Andrew nodded, the embarrassment at the situation, and the solution, enough to overwhelm his own panic. Shuffling over, Andrew slowly got into the chair, leaning back with the handkerchief covering his nose. The dental assistant came into view, her facial expression a little tense, but a smile still on her face.
"Can we flip that up so that I can check your teeth?" She asked, and Andrew nodded. He decided to cover his eyes and glasses with the handkerchief. Not because he had any issues going to the dentist, but more because he didn’t want to see the disgusted expression on her face when she saw his mouth.
After that, everything went smoothly. The dental assistant did everything she needed to, Andrew didn’t freak out again, and when it came time to make molds of his teeth and take x-rays, he sat up and shook like a leaf. Michael was there, offering his support as they did so. Andrew felt like he was barely holding onto a thin strand connected to his sanity.
He hated that. He hadn’t been like this before, but now that he had pheromones to worry about, he felt like a loose cannon. He knew he was behaving like one too. Before, a dental assistant never would have had slightly trembling hands when dealing with him. He knew it was his pheromones fault.
For the first time, he was genuinely angry with what had happened to him, and Tracey and Heather who had done it to him. They were making his life harder. He hadn’t fully realised it until now, after his fucking teeth had fallen out. But now that they had, and he was beginning to see the true consequences of their actions, he was pissed.
Being holed up with Maxwell in his house wasn’t a bad thing in Andrew’s eyes. Sure, it could get...boring, but it wasn’t a bad thing? His teeth falling out randomly while he was trying to normal things? That was a bad thing.
And now he wanted them to pay for it.
It wasn’t until after everything had been taken and he’d been left with Michael alone in the room for a minute before the dentist showed up.
She was a smaller woman, smaller than the dental assistant, and she wore a choker. Andrew felt his eyes widen, but that was about it. She was no nonsense, had a similar pair of glasses as Andrew funnily enough, and her expression was grim.
"Michael, what on earth have you brought me?" She asked, and Andrew winced at how icy her tone was.
"Hey! Don’t call Andrew an it! He can’t help it that he manifested late." Michael defended, and her shoulders relaxed before she glanced at Andrew. He was sure he looked quite pitiful holding a handkerchief against his nose as he hunched over on her chair.
"We’re an omega office, Michael. You knew that and still brought him in." She complained, and Michael frowned.
"He’s also one of my friends. He’s losing his mind right now, and he’s got a boyfriend. A uh, powerful boyfriend. I’m sure you’ve heard of the Beckett family?" The Dentist stared at Andrew for a long moment.
"They wanted him? Well, alright. Lie down Mr. Dating a Beckett. I’ve seen your scans, but I want to make sure." Andrew did as instructed. He covered his face again and let her work. Any questions, Michael answered. It was clear she didn’t like that, but Andrew didn’t know what to say. Or if he was allowed to speak.
He was so worried that there was something wrong with the rest of his teeth, that he wanted to wait until she gave the all good.
She sighed, finishing up whatever she was doing and taking the little bib off of Andrew. Andrew snorted the handkerchief like his life depended on it and met her serious gaze.
"As someone who has manifested late, everything appears to be in order. I haven’t seen this before, so you might want to get a second consultation, but your teeth appear to be in working order. Everything is strong, firm, and it’s clear you take care of them. From the x-rays, your third set of canines should be dropping into place any day now. Your gums are probably going to be tender and sore, and I’d recommend soft foods for a while." Andrew blinked, surprised and covered his mouth with the handkerchief.
"Nothing...N-Nothing is wrong?" Andrew asked, the first time he’d spoken since this had happened. Her eyes widened. Michael’s eyes widened as well.
"No. In my professional opinion, everything is going as it should. I can’t say exactly that everything is as it should be since I don’t normally work on true alphas, but I can say from an alpha perspective, everything is fine." Andrew couldn’t stop the tears if he tried. Michael sighed, while she seemed...very confused at his actions.
"Thank goodness." Andrew’s words were slightly unclear, slightly muddled especially since he was speaking into his handkerchief. Michael chuckled.
"I told you that everything was going to be okay, but you needed to hear it from someone else, huh?" Andrew nodded.
"You said we needed to see a dentist." Andrew said, and Michael smiled, reaching out and patting Andrew on the shoulder.
"Come on, is that any face to see your in-laws with? Mr. Beckett is going to make fun of you." Andrew sniffed.
"I’ve cried in front of him before. He’s used to it." Michael let out a bark of laughter at his response, while the Dentist went white.
"Wait, Mr. Beckett is here right now?!" She exclaimed and Michael gave her a smug look.
"Andrew here is pretty important." He bragged, before turning and rifling around in his pocket. "Use this to charge us. There is a lady out front who wants to make sure any expenses go to her." Andrew’s eyes widened.
"She doesn’t have to do that. I have my own money to pay for this." Andrew protested and Michael raised his hands.
"Take it up with her, Andy. I’m not the type to get in a woman like hers way. I feel like she’d smile as she ruined my whole life. I’m just a simple Doctor." Andrew didn’t believe that for a minute. Michael had been an exceptional Doctor and friend to him so far, and he must have been in high demand. He was also an attractive, kind alpha. He had also gotten the attention of the Beckett family, which was apparently a big deal. There was no way he was just a ’simple Doctor’. If Andrew was a betting man, which he was not, he would bet that Michael was the secret go to Doctor for a lot of wealthy families.
"If you say so." Andrew muttered, his mouth feeling strange. Missing those two teeth made his mouth feel...empty. There was wind that whistled between them too. "Um, how long do you think until the two teeth come in?" He asked the Dentist and she blinked, before her expression relaxed.
"Since your teeth fell out and you didn’t have to wiggle them at all, I’m going to say not too long. A couple of days. If you are worried, you can always come in with your partner and we can check on them." Andrew flushed. It had to be clear that he needed comfort, especially since he was holding onto the handkerchief. He sighed, his face red.
"I don’t dislike the dentist. I just...I’ve had a hard time going to other places." Andrew wanted to defend himself, stand up for his bad display. "I’m sorry for any discomfort I’ve caused. I haven’t really...left the house since I manifested. Yesterday was a big day, and I should have been at home resting." Andrew told her, and watched as her slightly stiff expression softened.
"It’s alright. Most of our staff is mated, so they were unaffected. Michael here seemed to be the most affected. His legs were shaking." She teased Michael, and Michael laughed it off.
"I can’t help it. Andy’s shaking out to be one powerful true alpha. His pheromones pack a punch." Andrew dropped the handkerchief, frowning.
"I didn’t hurt you, did I?" He asked softly, and both of them paused, before they relaxed.
"No Andy, you didn’t. You basically projected that...you were panicked." He told the man who was sitting on the dentist chair, tear streaks down his cheeks. Andrew wasn’t satisfied with that answer, but also knew that Michael probably wasn’t going to say anything different. He was also a stubborn man, especially since he was dealing with Andrew and Maxwell.
"Alright. Let’s get out of their hair and I’ll make sure I pay for the sudden visit." Andrew said firmly, and Michael shook his head, chuckling. Andrew had no idea what kind of fight he had ahead of
