Chapter 89: A good support system

His hands shook as he began to type out his reason for not speaking, but no one said anything as he worked. It was clear he wasn’t doing well, but Michael said nothing, letting Andrew get it out. Andrew knew that if Michael gave him some sweet, placating words that it wasn’t going to end well for him.

Andrew, that was. Not Michael. Andrew would never fire the man. He was too good at his job, and he was good and motivating Andrew. No, Andrew just felt like he would burst into tears if he was treated too kindly right now.

Hands still shaking, he handed the phone back to Michael. He hadn’t typed a lot, but when Michael read his words, his expression softened.

I’m worried the rest of my teeth are going to fall out.

"Andy, you remember when we discussed this, right? Only your canines are going to fall out. Not the rest of your teeth." Andrew motioned for the phone back, his hands still shaking. Michael watched him quietly, patiently, as Andrew fumbled through another sentence.

Micheal took the phone from Andrew’s offered hand and read the words. He frowned before glancing up at Andrew.

What if I sound stupid? Or if you’re wrong? We don’t know what is supposed to happen. We never got in to see a dentist.

"Andrew, as much as your situation is unique, there are some standard things to be expected. You are not the first to manifest as a true alpha, remember? You attend group meetings for this exact reason. I am sure that they have experienced what you are going through right now. But if it makes you feel better, I will get us an appointment with a dentist right now. Will that make you feel better?" Andrew nodded, sniffing. He’d been avoiding crying this whole time, but he was just so overwhelmed.

Fuck. he felt like a giant baby. He hadn’t cried this much since he was seven and his father had come to visit him for the first time that he could remember.

Michael smiled at him before he got to his feet, phone in hand, and made a few phone calls. He wandered into Andrew’s bedroom for a bit of privacy. Andrew sniffed, staring at his hands and the cloth he held there. Had he gotten blood on himself?

Now worried, he checked his clothes and found that they were spotless. At least he hadn’t made a mess of the clothes that Maxwell had bought him when he’d first moved in.

Thinking back, Maxwell had been very hesitant to let Andrew come back to his apartment and grab his things. He’d sent the guards to go do it, or was it Mr. Newman?

Andrew couldn’t remember. That time was a blur for him. He’d been busy trying to ignore everything that was happening in his body.

Kind of like right now.

Andrew’s shoulder shook as he laughed at himself. He was such a fucking idiot. God, why was he like this? He’d been so confident and calm before this had happened to him, and now he was a mess. It was a wonder that Maxwell even liked him in the first place.

"I just called a few contacts. We have an appointment for you as soon as you get to the dental office. We haven’t called Mr. Beckett yet since he’s in a meeting, but I did speak to the older Mr. Beckett. He said he’ll let Maxwell know the situation once he’s out of the meeting." Michael told Andrew as he came back into the living room.

Andrew slowly got to his feet, and nearly stumbled when he took a step. The guards were there to catch him, and Andrew wondered briefly when they had gotten so close. Then again, he was too full of anxiety to be paying attention to his surroundings.

"Careful there big guy. Don’t want you breaking any of your furniture." Michael joked as the guards helped Andrew out of the apartment and down the steps.

Andrew was thankful that they didn’t see any of his nosy neighbours. Or if they did see him, they didn’t come speak to him. Andrew was sure he looked upset, maybe even angry. He really didn’t want to speak to them while he was in his head this much. Even if it had been a while since he’d seen them.

Michael helped into a black car waiting outside and his guards got into the car as well. Michael filled the air with chatter, speaking to both of his guards about casual things. Andrew didn’t pay attention to what they were speaking about, staring out the window, pale as if he was on his way to the gallows.

It felt like he blinked, and they were at the dental office. Andrew needed help getting out of the car again, his whole body shaking. Andrew was sure his pheromones had to be out of whack, but Michael didn’t get angry at him for it. Andrew was grateful for that. It was something he wasn’t able to control in the slightest right now. He was too filled with fear.

Andrew approached the front of the unassuming brick building, wringing his hands in fear. He was sure this wasn’t the first time that someone had been so afraid to sit in the dentist’s chair, but he wasn’t sure if they were used to why Andrew was so afraid.

One of the guards opened the front doors, with the first guard going ahead, Andrew in between him and Michael, and then the one who opened the door coming in last. Andrew was staring at the ground, nervous and fearful until he heard someone call his name.

"Andy?" Stunned, Andrew raised his head quickly to meet the blue gaze of Mrs. Proctor. She was in a suit similar to the day before, but her suit had a slightly shiny sheen to it. Her blonde hair was pulled back with a claw clip, and she was wringing her hands in a similar manner as Andrew.

Mr. Beckett, the elder, was standing next to her. Both of them had concerned expressions until they saw Andrew. Mrs. Proctor rushed towards him, wrapping her arms around the wider man.

"Oh Andrew. You look like you’ve seen a ghost! Come here child. Everything will be okay." She soothed and Andrew felt his tears spill over. "Kim had a meeting, so she couldn’t be here, but she wanted to. She told me to tell you that everything will be okay." Andrew sniffed, blinking rapidly as Mrs. Proctor pulled back and wiped his tears away. "You’re just a big crybaby, aren’t you? How does Maxwell deal with this? You’re too cute when you cry like this." She teased, and Andrew didn’t know what to say.

"I called her as soon as Dr. Smith and I got off the phone. I felt it was only right, after hearing how your meeting with them went yesterday." Mr. Beckett said as he approached quietly. Michael had gone off to speak to the dental assistant while Andrew’s two guards remained close by. Mr. Beckett looked him over, concern clear in his expression. "I’m not familiar with what happens to a true alpha, but Dr. Smith assures me that this is normal for those who have manifested late. I know that the fear and confusion you feel feels justified, but I believe in Dr. Smith. He wouldn’t lie to you." Andrew appreciated that he didn’t give him empty words of comfort.

Mrs. Proctor gave him the stink eye, but Andrew placed his hand on her shoulder and shook his head. He wanted to smile at her, but frowned instead. His whole expression dropped as he realised he couldn’t even do that. Mrs. Proctor looked distressed.

"It’s okay. It’s alright. I won’t get mad at Maxwell’s Dad. You seem to like him, don’t you?" Andrew nodded, and Mr. Beckett’s eyes widened slightly, before his shoulders relaxed.

"I like you too, Andrew." Mr. Beckett said. "Similarly to Mrs. Proctor, my Wife did want to be here, but she had a fashion show she had to host. If it had been anything else, she would have ducked out to be here." Andrew nodded, his expression grim. The two remained beside him, trying to soothe him until Michael came back with another person.

A woman.

She was in scrubs, and she had a slight smile on her face.

"Andrew? We’re here to take you into the back. We’ll have to ask everyone else to wait here until we’re done since our room just isn’t that big." Andrew nodded, and Mrs. Proctor gave his hand a squeeze before letting him go. Michael fell into step with Andrew as they headed to the back.

"They are going to do some x-rays, check on the rest of your teeth, and anything else they think is appropriate. I promise it will be completely normal. Like a regular trip to the dentist." Michael said, and Andrew nodded. He was normally really good when it came to going to the dentist, but he was not quite himself right now.

He was something...other.

Where the fuck had all his confidence gone? Gods, he felt like a damn fool.

"The dentist is a friend of mine. You didn’t meet them, but they are good at their job. An alpha, so just be kind to him. I know he’s on the more powerful side, but please, if you can, watch your pheromones. Most aren’t going to react because they are mated, but your fear is making them potent." Andrew winced, and turned to stare at Michael, concerned. Michael smiled easily, placing his hand on Andrew’s shoulder. "I’m fine. I know you aren’t trying to suppress me on purpose. Just...think less stressful thoughts. This is just a normal check up. Nothing crazy has happened." Andrew exhaled slowly. Trying to believe Michael’s words.

It felt like all calm left his system when he came face to face with the dentist chair.
