Chapter 76: Daddy issues run deep

"On the topic of shitty situations, we should speak about your father, Andy." Andrew winced, and Maxwell tightened his grip on Andrew’s hand. Mrs. Proctor pulled herself away from Andrew and with a squeeze of his shoulders, she went back to her wife. She took Kim’s hand in her own, giving it a kiss.

"You know who his father is?" Maxwell asked, and Kim slid her gaze to Andrew’s hardened expression and nodded.

"Always have. I was the one who helped Dianna clean up after that fucking monster hurt her." Andrew swallowed thickly at the words she used, and Maxwell reached over and pinched Andrew’s tight without saying a word. He flinched.

"Andrew says he doesn’t want to know, and that he doesn’t know." Maxwell said, and Kim nodded.

"Yeah. His Mom didn’t want him to know either. More for his safety than anything else. Sure, he showed his face every once in a while, but that’s different than getting to know all of your step mothers and other shit." Andrew nearly choked on air hearing those words.

"Step mothers?" He repeated, and Kim nodded grimly.

"The man is a fucking monster. Can’t keep it in his pants. You have...a lot of siblings, Andrew." Andrew had, unfortunately, always assumed so.

"Are...are they like me?" Andrew asked, and Kim turned thoughtful.

"Hmm. Well, it would be hard to create an Andrew in that environment, but there might be hope. Most of the women that he kept around him after and before your Mom were quite...power hungry so who knows how their kids turned out. If you are asking about true alphas, I think there are two. Lots of omegas, which is the exact opposite a family like them would like. They did try to marry a few into our family since we won’t work with them directly, and thankfully the family heads listened to me when I suggested that they shouldn’t allow it. I played with the family’s image." She chuckled while Mrs. Proctor looked slightly awkward.

"Why would they not want omegas? I’m not understanding the problem here." Andrew said, and the three of them looked at him. Maxwell started laughing, the tinkling sound filling the air as Andrew blinked, unsure why he was doing so.

"Andrew, I adore you." Andrew’s face turned bright red and he adjusted his glasses while Kim laughed.

"You are your Mother’s son alright. Andrew, I know you grew up as a beta, and probably have a lot of animosity towards those who treat omegas poorly, correct?" Andrew nodded.

"Yeah, I guess you could say that. I don’t understand it. It really doesn’t make sense to me. People are people. So what if they have pheromones? So do fucking alphas, and they also go into heat. They’re the ones who decided to call it a rut instead of a heat like the omegas. It feels hot, why the fuck would anyone call it a rut?" The three laughed as if they couldn’t control themselves, and Maxwell leaned his head against Andrew’s shoulder.

"Mmhmm. You’re right, Andrew." Andrew knew the man was teasing him, but he didn’t mind if it meant that Maxwell was being affectionate with him in front of others.

"That’s...one way to view it, but think of it this way. You’re not going to like this viewpoint, but stay with me. No one in the room agrees with what I am about to say." Kim stated, before she began clarifying for Andrew. "In our society, omegas are getting a better image for themselves, but they are still viewed as breeding machines to produce alphas, or ’high quality children’. In the older families, especially those with true alphas, omegas who are born in such families are viewed as failures. Even if it was from an omega that another true alpha was born from." Andrew’s hand clenched tightly, and Kim noticed. She smiled softly, before continuing.

"It was the reason your Mom was from a branch family versus the main family like I was. It’s also why her family name was different. Omegas, when born from families like ours," Kim gestured to Maxwell, "can’t inherit the family name. Maxwell’s Father is an exception in the case of an alpha who broke away from the main family and still remains strong, but I suspect that Maxwell always assumed he would lose the Beckett name once he married." Maxwell’s expression was somber and Andrew’s eyes widened.

"That makes no fucking sense. You can’t have more alphas without omegas. Are they all fucking idiots?" Kim chuckled at Andrew’s angry words.

"Well, I wouldn’t say it to their faces, but yes, I agree with you. Their logic is inherently flawed, and thus, they have engaged in some serious fucked up practises. I know that both of your brother’s are engaged, Maxwell?" Maxwell nodded.

"My eldest is about to confirm their wedding and mating soon." Kim’s eyes softened.

"I am glad he found a love match in his partner, but correct me if I’m wrong, it was an arranged marriage?" Maxwell’s mouth hardened, but he nodded. Kim looked over at Andrew with warm, but angry eyes. "That’s the norm. Before rules were put into place, so was marrying your cousin, or even a sibling to try to keep the line ’pure’. Granted, most of normal society doesn’t behave this way. It’s just the freaks near the top that are like this." Kim sighed, as if exhausted, while Andrew’s head swam with all of this information. Holy shit.

"And my father helped perpetuate this?" Andrew asked. The women nodded. Maxwell, who didn’t even know who he was, but was pretty sure he had a good guess, nodded as well.

"Your father is many things. A businessman, a piece of shit, a narcissist, but of all the things he is, he is the shining little bastard that his family made him to be." Andrew opened his mouth and Kim raised her hand. "Do not feel an ounce of sympathy for him. He went willingly into their sweet arms when his family asked him to do what he did. Most true alphas don’t do that shit anymore. Even if it isn’t for love, and they get an arranged marriage, they rarely take on several mates like your father did. I would say maybe 10 per generation worldwide, Andy. That’s the kind of man your father is, and I think it’s his karma that he only got two true alphas out of it. I’m not counting you anymore because someone fucked with your genes." Maxwell pressed a kiss against Andrew’s shoulder, his grip slightly clammy on Andrew’s hand.

"If what I’m thinking is true, how the hell did you avoid them?" Maxwell asked, and Kim chuckled.

"Well, they tried to force an arranged marriage onto me with an omega from their family, but guess who mated said omega?" Andrew gasped.

"No!" Andrew was disgusted. Kim shrugged.

"A third cousin is fair game apparently. My family viewed it as an incredible slight, and so I was able to use that to justify my behaviour, even if it was because of Dianna that I fucking hated their guts." Kim sighed. "The only reasonable person in your family is your grandfather, the one who birthed your father Andy. I hope that if you do end up running into your family, you at least get to meet them. As soon as he saw how your father was turning out, he cut all ties with him. And, beat the shit out of his mate." Andrew’s eyes widened in shock.

"I’ve never heard that story before." Maxwell muttered, and Kim laughed. She raised her wife’s hand to her lips, planting a kiss there as she settled back into the couch.

"I doubt anyone would. It’s kept quite hush hush since most wouldn’t view omegas strong enough to do something like that. I only knew because I have a childhood friend from one of the branch families. A wonderful omega who married out of the family. I should invite them over sometime and you should meet. I think that you two would like them and their mate." Kim was warm and welcoming, but Andrew felt like his reality was crumbling beneath him.

How big was the family his father came from? If Maxwell was already able to guess from the limited amount of information that Kim was giving, how big and powerful was the family? Oh god, he wasn’t related to a family in power, was he?

"We would love that. But I think Andrew has heard enough since his pheromone blockers are supposed to be wearing off around now, and his brain is getting full of information." Maxwell told the women with a smile. "Are you going to be able to drive, Andrew?" Maxwell asked him sweetly, and Andrew swallowed.

"I...If I take a few minutes, I think so." The two women in front of them had sympathetic smiles on their faces.

"I’m sorry we brought up complicated topics, Andrew. Why don’t you have a drink in the cafe downstairs and gather your thoughts. Tell them my name, and next time you visit they’ll just know who you are." Andrew’s head felt bloated. He’d never been treated like this before. Maxwell chuckled.

"How are you going to handle working in my company if you can’t handle this much? Everyone is going to know that we’re sleeping together, Andrew." Andrew opened his mouth while the ladies laughed at his expression. Maxwell’s smile reached his eyes as he teased him.

"I-I thought we had a fake identity for me?" Andrew responded, and Maxwell laughed.

"Andrew, you know that’s only for show, right? To keep your old company off of our back?" Andrew swallowed at the look in his eyes. "You’re going to be sleeping with the president of a company. Everyone is going to know who you are. Some free snacks and tea is the bare minimum."
