Chapter 68: An angry black cat

Andrew was doing his best not to laugh as Maxwell leveled a glare at the phone on the kitchen counter. He had a feeling that if Mrs. Proctor was here in the flesh that she’d be shaking in her boots. It was a strange feeling. Andrew could still feel the tears rolling down his cheeks, but Maxwell had puffed up to defend him so quickly that he couldn’t help but laugh.

"Mrs. Proctor, this is my boyfriend, Maxwell Beckett." Andrew introduced and Maxwell glared at the phone.

"It’s a pleasure." Maxwell’s voice dripped venom and Andrew’s shoulders shook.

"She’s not at fault, Max." Andrew told the smaller man, but Maxwell wouldn’t hear it.

"Uh, it’s a pleasure to meet you too, Mr. Beckett. What...what seems to be the problem?" Mrs. Proctor asked and Andrew watched as Maxwell’s lip twitched.

"Why is Andrew crying?" He demanded and Mrs. Proctor gasped.

"Andrew? Are you crying right now?" Andrew nodded, noticing how Maxwell frowned at him as he did so.

"He is. I could feel him getting emotional and I came downstairs to check on him. What were you two talking about?" Maxwell demanded angrily. "Why is he upset? What have you done?" Andrew placed his hand on Maxwell’s shoulder, giving it a squeeze.

"Maxwell, it isn’t anything bad. Mrs. Proctor is the person running A and D. She took over for my Mom." Andrew told him, trying to soothe him. Maxwell wouldn’t budge.

"Uh, I’m unsure why Andrew is crying, but I promise you if I said anything to upset you I’ll readily apologise." Mrs. Proctor offered and Andrew sighed. He was going to have to bear everything before Maxwell would calm down, and then he’d have to calm down Mrs. Proctor.

"Max, Mrs. Proctor is a true alpha, and she knows who my father is." Andrew started, the tears in his eyes slowing down finally. Andrew wiped at his eyes with his fingers and the timer went off for his cookies.

Turning, Andrew slipped on the oven mitts again, sliding the cookies out of the oven before sliding another tray into the oven. He set the timer, and when he finally turned around again he noticed that Maxwell’s expression had slightly softened.

"She knows who your father is?" He asked, and Andrew nodded.

"Yeah." Andrew confirmed, sniffing. Maxwell remained quiet for a moment before he sighed.

"Fine. I’ll admit, I overreacted, but can you blame me?" Maxwell muttered, his ears turning pink. Andrew thought he was adorable. "I hate seeing you cry." Maxwell muttered, and Andrew could think of plenty of times where he loved seeing Andrew cry. He kept that to himself.

"I appreciate you coming to defend me, but I promise Mrs. Proctor is not the person you need to defend me against. She didn’t know Mom had passed." Maxwell nodded.

"I remember you two discussing that at dinner the other night. Is there a step you need to take now that she knows?" Maxwell asked, and Mrs. Proctor cleared her throat.

"Yes, which was why I originally called. Andrew has a few papers he needs to sign as Dianna’s heir. If he had any interest in accounting I would have offered him a job with the plan that he would eventually take over, but Andrew informed me of his plans, so we have a different route. There are a few options, but I wanted to talk to Andrew about those in person." She sighed. "But, with him being so recently manifested, I don’t want to overwhelm Andrew by coming to the main office." She told Maxwell, and Andrew glanced at him as she spoke.

Maxwell was listening to the phone raptly, his eyes barely blinking as he listened. With his arms still crossed, Maxwell listened to her and Andrew realised it was business Maxwell who was with them. Maxwell nodded.

"If I come with him it should be fine. Andrew had been basically using my pheromones as a block to all other pheromones." Mrs. Proctor was silent on the other side of the phone for another long moment.

"Well, if that’s alright with you and isn’t a burden to you, I would really appreciate it. Otherwise, I would come to you." She offered and Maxwell glanced over at Andrew. He smiled.

"I have a feeling Andrew has no idea how much A and D has grown over the years so I want him to see what his Mother built with your help. That and his Doctor has recommended that he can leave the house now, but supervised basically. I don’t want to keep him locked up forever." Maxwell said and Andrew’s emotions swelled again. He hated that his emotions currently had a direct line to his tear ducts right now.

Andrew sniffed, wiping his now watering eyes again.

"But you’re so busy and-"

"It’s alright Andrew. A visit to the downtown core will be fine. Plus, we can take our own car, and if it makes you feel better I can stop into work for a minute to check on everything in person. Will that make you feel better?" Maxwell turned, asking him directly. Andrew gulped.

"I just-"

"Hush you big baby. I wouldn’t offer if it wasn’t something I wanted to do. Mrs. Proctor, is there a time tomorrow that could work?" Maxwell asked, smiling at the weeping, leaking alpha next to him.

"I have some free time at around 2 pm tomorrow. Does that work for you?" She asked, her tone business-like and Andrew sniffed. The tears kept falling and Maxwell uncrossed his arms to reach up and cup Andrew’s face, his fingers wiping the trail of tears.

"I can make that work. Is there anything else you need?" Maxwell asked her and she hesitated.

"No, that should be everything. I’ll see you two tomorrow." She said and Andrew sniffed.

"Bye Mrs. Proctor." Andrew called, his voice warbling and heard her chuckle slightly.

"Bye Andrew, Mr. Beckett." Maxwell nodded as the line went dead and the two of them stood in the kitchen. Andrew scrunched up his face.

"I hate this." Andrew muttered, wiping at his eyes as they continued to leak. He couldn’t blame his eyes too much since his chest was full of emotions. Maxwell shook his head before getting up on his tip toes and pressing a single kiss under each of his eyes.

"You are changing. It’s okay. Be kind with yourself." He told him and Andrew wanted to swear. His kindness was going to make him cry even more.

"But you’re so strong all the time, and I want to be there to support you too. I can’t do that while crying all the time." Andrew protested and Maxwell’s expression softened.

"You’ve been supporting me the whole time Andrew. You’ve been able to support me even when I didn’t want any. And who says you can’t be strong and cry at the same time? What kind of toxic masculinity is that?" Andrew snorted, and Maxwell’s face turned up with a smile. "It’s my turn to openly support you. Let me. I find it very rewarding to do so. It’s my first time wanting to do this for another, so humour me, please?" Maxwell blinked his big, blue eyes at Andrew and Andrew folded easily and quickly.

Wrapping his arms around Maxwell, he pulled him closer, tucking his head against his chest as Andrew inhaled his scent.

"I...I’m doing my best." Andrew muttered, and Maxwell laughed.

"I feel like we’re both a little awkward about relying on others, don’t you think?" Andrew frowned.

"We were pretty good at it when we were just friends." Andrew argued, and Maxwell shook his head.

"Oh no, you were, I was not. But you also didn’t give me a choice. Your Mom was right with her dog and his toy analogy." Maxwell told him. "But you gotta let go of the toy this time. I’m not taking it away forever. I’m not even taking it away." Andrew tensed, fighting against his instincts. Instead of speaking, he held Maxwell tighter against him. Maxwell let him, patting his back soothingly.

Maxwell was able to see right through him most of the time, and it was a terrifying but also a soothing prospect to him. Andrew wasn’t able to see completely through Maxwell yet, and he had a feeling he wouldn’t be comforted completely until they were on equal footing.

This way of thinking was the exact thing that Andrew and Maxwell were discussing. They don’t have to be on equal footing all the time. It’s a give and take, and Maxwell was asking Andrew to let him give. To let Maxwell give back to him.

Clenching his arms around Maxwell, the sigh that left him held a part of his soul.

"I’ll do my best. It’s hard for me to do this. I...I started crying because Mrs. Proctor asked me how I was doing, and meant it. She also offered me support without asking for anything back." Maxwell tensed, before he relaxed.

"Why did that make you cry?" He asked softly, his hands still rubbing and patting Andrew’s back.

"It was...I haven’t had an older person who knew my Mom in my life since her. I think I remember meeting her as a kid, but I was so absorbed into my own life and taking care of Mom that most people faded to the background. Mrs. Proctor...she knows Mom. And she hates my father." Maxwell tsked.

"Fuck. Then I really need to apologise for my behaviour. Do you think she’d like a fruit basket?" He asked, and Andrew laughed.

"I think if you brought Mom’s favourite flowers she’d like that more. I’m seemingly remembering that they both liked hydrangeas."
