Chapter 67: An offer of support
It was the next day when Michael showed up with good news.
Andrew, after interacting with others, could go to work.
BUT, it had to be somewhere with limited contact with omegas and alphas, it had to be somewhere where he could run away and hide if he needed a minute, and it had to be somewhere where if he could, he could have contact with Maxwell.
If he was honest with himself, he was pretty sure it was a setup by Maxwell’s Father and Michael was helping him, but Andrew was just happy to hear the good news. It wasn’t an immediate thing, since he still had to be assigned a job that he could do, and there was also the fact that he wasn’t fully qualified to work in the company in the capacity that Maxwell wanted from him, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to try.
His lessons with Michael weren’t just about him being an alpha, but it was now also about medical science. Andrew had a feeling this was more than slightly unethical, but Michael and Maxwell didn’t seem to care. Maxwell was too busy with his own work and also trying to get Andrew into a medical school that wouldn’t ask too many questions to pay too much attention to Andrew’s lessons.
Andrew didn’t mind. Maxwell was a busy man, with a lot of responsibilities. He already felt bad that Maxwell had to halt his traveling for work because of him. Maxwell hadn’t said anything about it, but it wasn’t like Andrew was an idiot. He knew that Maxwell had done a lot of traveling internationally before Andrew had entered his life. He had barely left the house since Andrew had moved in.
Andrew was appreciative of the level of care Maxwell was showing him, and he wasn’t upset about it. He just didn’t want to hold the man back. He didn’t want to be the reason Maxwell lost contracts or his company lost money. That would kill him if that happened.
Of course, he never voiced this to Maxwell. He didn’t want to worry that man needlessly, or hear Maxwell try to soothe him. He was a big boy. He could handle these emotions on his own.
Speaking of not feeling like a burden, like Maxwell’s Father had suggested, it was the next day when Andrew got a frantic phone call from the lady who had taken over his Mom’s accounting firm.
"M-Mr. Knox? This is Mrs. Proctor. We’ve spoken before, but it’s been years since. Uh, I was told by Mr. Beckett of the Beckett family that you are acquainted?" She started, clearly nervous. Andrew, who had answered while mid-baking session, felt his lips turn up as he glanced at his timer. He had a few minutes to chat.
"Ah, yes. I’m dating their youngest son." It seemed like Mrs. Proctor nearly choked on the other line before she recovered herself.
"O-Oh. That’s wonderful news. I um, I also heard...that your Mother is no longer with us?" Her voice quieted at the end and Andrew sighed. His chest squeezed in pain and he frowned.
"I am so sorry Mrs. Proctor. I thought I had informed you, but it explains why you didn’t come to the funeral." Andrew chuckled at himself. "I was a bit of a mess at the time." Mrs. Proctor panicked.
"No! Please don’t beat yourself up about it. I’m more upset that I wasn’t able to help you during that time. Your Mom and I...we were quite close and I feel terrible that you were suffering alone without anyone to support you." She sighed, and Andrew could hear some shuffling of papers on her side of the phone. Her chair squeaked as she leaned back. "Now that I know it’s true, I hope it’s okay if I ask you to come to the main office at your leisure. I will need to finish the last of the hand off documents since she’s passed. You never went into accounting, did you?" She asked, and Andrew chuckled.
"No. I became an environmental scientist, but I’m planning to go back to school and finish my medical degree." Mrs. Proctor made a soft noise on the other side of the phone.
"Oh Dianna would love that if you did. Your Father never got a degree, so you getting two would be a wonderful slap to his face." It took a moment for both of them to realise what had happened. Andrew’s eyes widened as he realised just how close Mrs. Proctor and his Mom had been. She gasped, horrified. "I am so sorry! That was incredibly unprofessional and-" Andrew cut her off, grinning.
"Oh no, I’m totally fine Mrs. Proctor. In fact, it also makes me happy to hear that. I had no idea." She let out a relieved sigh before she groaned.
"I promise I’m not normally like this. I’m just flustered. I haven’t spoken to you since you were a young adult and I’m sure you’ve grown and changed since then. Especially if you’re dating the youngest of the Beckett brothers. He was...Maxwell Beckett? We manage the main business accounts, but I don’t think we manage them yet." Mrs. Proctor seemed to level out the more she spoke of her craft and the timer for Andrew’s cookies went off. "Oh, did I catch you in the middle of something?" She asked, able to hear it and Andrew wondered if she was an alpha or an omega.
"Just some baking. Let me put you on speaker." Andrew said, doing so before reaching for his oven mitts.
"You still bake? That’s wonderful. I remember your Mom bringing in your baked goods throughout your childhood. You always had a magic touch when it came to cooking." Opening the oven, Andrew pulled out the cookies before sliding another sheet in. He only had two more after this.
"Well, one of us had to be able to cook." They laughed as they remembered Andrew’s Mother. Andrew liked this. It had been so long since he’d spoken to someone who knew her, and remembered her well enough to speak of her habits and behaviours. Andrew worried for a moment before he decided to just bite the bullet. "Mrs. Proctor, you know who my father is, correct?" Andrew asked and there was silence on the other line.
"I do. Is there a reason you’re asking? Do you not know?" Andrew took off the oven mitts before he ran his hand through his hair.
"I avoid finding out." Andrew admitted, before he sighed again. "And...recently I’ve manifested." She was silent on the other end for a long moment. So long Andrew worried if she had hung up.
"Ah. So Dianna’s worst fear came true." It was like a knife was twisted into his chest. "Don’t worry, I won’t let that man get anywhere near you." She promised, and Andrew felt confusion fill him.
"What do you mean?" He asked and she chuckled on the other end.
"Your Mother loved you very, very much, and put contingencies into place in case anything happened. You manifesting late was one of those she worried about. It was the one she feared the most because of all of your interactions with your father up until this point. You would not have any good feelings if you manifested as an alpha, but you’d be fine if you became an omega. We all knew the chances of you becoming one was slim, given everything about you. Oh Mr. Knox, no, Andrew, I’m so sorry you manifested so late. Do you at least have support? Is Maxwell Beckett treating you well?" Worry laced her tone and Andrew gripped onto the kitchen counter for support.
It was strange to Andrew to have someone care for him like this since his Mom had passed. He knew that she genuinely cared about him, especially with the way she spoke about his father. But it had been so long that someone older, someone who was supposed to be more mature had asked Andrew if he was alright like this.
"I...It’s been hard. My friend who is a Doctor has been helping but I had a really hard time accepting it at first. I think anyone would." Andrew admitted softly, unsure if he should even be saying it out loud. He knew Maxwell was upstairs, and Michael had just left, but it felt strange to be talking like this without either one of them around.
"Oh Andrew. I’m so sorry to hear that. How recently has it been?" She asked.
"It’s only been a few weeks." He admitted and she sucked in.
"Oh dear lord. If you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask. I, like your piece of work father, am a true alpha. But unlike that waste of space, I am mated to only one partner. I know our experiences might be slightly different since our primary genders differ, but I’m sure all of the other things are probably along the same lines." A sense of relief washed over Andrew and he began to laugh. He wasn’t aware he was crying until the first tear hit the kitchen counter.
"I...thank you. Thank you so much." Andrew’s voice choked up and he heard her sniff on the other side.
"Oh boy. I had hoped I would have been there for you if this happened, but now that it’s here, I’m kicking myself. If you’ve just manifested, can you even come to the main office? I don’t want to overwhelm you." Her caring tone, and the way she spoke to him filled Andrew with such a sense of longing he couldn’t stop the tears from falling. His shoulders shook as he tried desperately to gather himself.
He wasn’t at all surprised when he heard the soft sound of Maxwell’s feel approach.
"Baby? Is everything okay?"
