Chapter 26: A Father’s worry

Chapter 26: A Father’s worry

"A bunch of fucking low lives. Is he okay? I assume you offered him a job right away." Maxwell chuckled, a smile touching his lips.

"Of course I did. We’ll have to fudge a couple of things, since he’s basically been chased out of his line of work, but it helps that he knows a couple of people in the community. He apparently went to Harvard with Dr. Smith."

"But he didn’t finish?" His father asked, picking up on what Maxwell wasn’t saying.

"Well I don’t work with the hospital side of things, now do I? So why would I be trying to hire a human Doctor? No, Andrew changed to a different field. He is still a Doctor, just not of medicine."

"So why is he at your house then, Maxwell? Especially if you are neighbours." Maxwell’s smile faded from his face and he turned to stare out the window overlooking the front yard and the neighbourhood. His eyes slid to Andrew’s balcony.

"...His girlfriend, or ex-girlfriend had quite the reputation in the industry. She’s fucking insane, and has been kicked out of several companies because of some serious issues. The only reason she got hired at the same company as Andrew was because her aunt was on the board. But...that led to some serious consequences. She...She kidnapped Andrew for a week and used him in an experiment." Maxwell couldn’t even hear his father breathing on the other side.

"What?" Maxwell’s eyes began to water. Fuck. He couldn’t cry while on the phone with his father. He didn’t want to deal with whatever problem that caused.

"Andrew was kidnapped for a week and experimented on by his fucking crazy ex-girlfriend. He was a beta, Father, and now..." Maxwell inhaled shakily. "He’s lucky to be alive. Dr. Smith was fucking furious. Andrew had an absurd level of rut and alpha hormones in his system. I didn’t even find him. He escaped and found his way to my house. He’s covered in bruises and puncture holes. I’m so fucking angry, I just-" Maxwell cut himself off, running his hand over his face. "I’m really saying that I might not be able to do my work to the same level until Andrew’s adjusted. He needs someone to support him, and he doesn’t have any family left. I can’t trust his fucking friends, so it’s me."

"Maxwell, why are you going so far for one man? I understand that he’s been through a true horror, but you normally wouldn’t be like this." Maxwell bit his lip, thinking back on the months that he’d been living here, and how much he and Andrew had interacted. In the grand scheme of things, they hadn’t known each other for long, but that was okay. All of their interactions, all of their talks, and moments, meant something. They actually meant a lot to Maxwell.

"I...I don’t know. I just know that if our roles were reversed, Andrew would do the same thing for me. He already has. He’s been with me for several of my meetings with alphas who wanted to take advantage of me because I was an omega. He was there when the Fulton’s tried to drug me."

"Oh? He was the beta that was involved there? I had no idea." He hated how deadpan his father sounded. He’d already personally dealt with the Fulton’s, he didn’t need to get a stick up his ass over it. Maxwell could take care of himself.

"Yes. Andrew doesn’t treat me as less then, and we’ve been friends for months now. He doesn’t even know what I do, or who my family are. It doesn’t matter to him." His Father chuckled.

"Sure, let’s say I believe you, what happens when he does change?"

"He won’t." Maxwell stated firmly. His father laughed.

"Oh? How are you so sure? Money changes everyone, Maxwell." A chill ran down his spine.

"Don’t you dare try to lure him away. He’s not well. He just escaped, and needs a safe place to be."

"Maxwell, I would never hurt an injured man. It just makes sense now why you’ve called me over your Mother. So, you want me to keep this little beta man a secret?" Maxwell hesitated. It would be better if his father knew the truth, but for some reason, he was hesitating. "Maxwell?" His father’s tone held a hint of warning, and Maxwell sighed.

"He’s...he’s not a beta anymore." There was silence on the other line.

"What?"

"They fucked him up. They used him in an experiment, Father. He’s...he’s an alpha, and a true alpha as well." A loud bang could be heard on the other side of the phone.

"And you are alone in a house with a fucking TRUE ALPHA?" Maxwell winced, happy that he had gone upstairs now to have this conversation. He wasn’t sure how sensitive Andrew was to sounds yet.

"He’s been given a cocktail of drugs and supplements from Dr. Smith. He’s asleep, Father. He’s not going to hurt me."

"Oh, sure. I don’t know why you expect me to be so calm after hearing that my omega son is alone in a house right now with a ticking fucking time bomb." Maxwell’s chest hurt, hearing those words from his father.

"Don’t say that about Andrew." He warned, his tone serious.

"Maxwell, how else am I supposed to react? The man just went through an incredible trauma, and you’re only now telling me that he isn’t even a beta anymore? He’s been experimented on! You cannot tell me that he’s going to be the same after that!" It took Maxwell a moment to realise that in his anger, not only at his father, but at everything that had happened to Andrew, it had translated into hot, angry tears.

Maxwell wiped at his eyes angrily, hating that it was even happening.

"How could you say that about someone who’s a victim?" Maxwell knew his voice had shifted, and he hated that more. He had to be strong. "He’s innocent, so how could you think of him that way? He did nothing wrong. He’s just...He’s not the kind of guy you are trying to make him out to be."

"M-Maxwell? Are you-Are you crying? Fuck, I-I’m sorry son, I was just worried about you. Please don’t cry." Maxwell sniffed.

"I can’t help it. I’m just so angry that all of this had to happen to someone like him. He brought me a fucking casserole when we first met. That’s the kind of guy he is. He’s already worried that he’s a burden, I don’t want others to make him feel that way either. I care for him, and I don’t want you, or anyone else to upset him. I’m already pissed that the damn Doctor stood up to me, but he did so because he likes Andrew too, and wants him to get better. If you saw him, you wouldn’t be having these thoughts."

"O-Okay, alright. I’ll talk to Dr. Smith then. You said they went to Harvard, yeah? He must be very smart then." Maxwell sniffed.

"We gave him his scholarship when he went to Harvard. He’s incredibly smart. He didn’t drop out because he wasn’t good at the program. He dropped out because of something else."

"...We gave him a scholarship to Harvard? The Becketts?" His father confirmed, and Maxwell nodded, still wiping the trails of tears away.

"Yes. At least, that’s what Dr. Smith said. Andrew had no clue, and still has no clue what our name means. I don’t think he cares. He just...He’s my friend."

"Okay. I understand, so stop crying Maxwell." Maxwell sniffed angrily.

"You don’t think I’m trying? I don’t like to cry either, but I had to keep it together in front of Andrew, otherwise he would have felt bad. I’m just so fucking angry. I want their whole family line extinguished for what they’ve done. Andrew hates alphas. They turned him into something he hates. I can’t even begin to understand how that is going to fuck him up." Maxwell’s voice was warbling, and he hated it. The damn tears were taking away his voice.

"I can make that happen. I’ll make sure that those fuckers who did this are punished to the highest degree. Why don’t you pass on the information you’ve gathered and I’ll put some of my men on it, alright? Will that make it easier on you?" Maxwell shook his head.

"No, it won’t. I want to feel their blood in between my fingers. That damn bitch took away not only his job, but his life! How could anyone be so cruel to someone who I don’t think has had a bad thought in his head ever. The man’s always got a smile on his face, and always seems to be shitting rainbows. He makes friends with everyone. I see him chatting to people in his apartment building. He’s a good man. I just..." Maxwell’s eyes were drawn towards Andrew’s balcony and he sniffed.

"Alright Maxwell. I understand. I won’t say anything bad about him again, alright? Will that make you feel better?" Maxwell thought about it for a second, before nodding.

"Yes. That would make me feel better." His father sighed on the other side.

"Alright. I’ll make sure to tell your brothers that as well. I can’t stop your mother if she doesn’t like him." Maxwell sniffed. He knew that his father was the best one to speak to about all of this.

"Alright. Thanks Father." He sighed on the other side again.

"Just...please don’t cry. I never know what to do." He muttered and Maxwell gave a wet laugh.

"I don’t either. "

"Was that all you wanted to speak about? Is there anything else? I can always shuffle around one of your brother’s if you were supposed to go on a business trip." Maxwell nodded.

"That was all. It’s...no one knows what is going to happen. Dr. Smith is going to swing by tomorrow, but I’ll need to leave for a few hours to get some work done and get some things in place so I can work from home. If you could get some security in place, I would appreciate it. I have no idea if they are going to try to take him back or not."

"You have my word, it will be done. You know we’ve always wanted you to have security." Maxwell sighed.

"Yeah, I know. I just didn’t think I would get it under these circumstances."
