Chapter 25: Maxwell’s Anger
Chapter 25: Maxwell’s Anger
After the two interlopers left, the house fell quiet. Andrew had calmed himself, while Maxwell still felt a burning rage growing deep within him. It was mainly due to the fact that Andrew seemed to calm down relatively quickly.
And that damn Doctor his assistant had hired.
Maxwell had worried that the Doctor was going to make Andrew uncomfortable at first, but when it came to light that the two knew each other, he relaxed.
Then he changed his mind.
That damn Dr. Smith talked to Andrew as if he’d known him his whole life, and he dared to order around his assistant and argue with him? He was pissed. He was more pissed that Andrew had defended him too. But he couldn’t blame Andrew. The man had gone through a terrifying situation, and it wasn’t Maxwell’s place to take away any form of comfort he found, even if it annoyed him.
He’d had to wait until Andrew had his feet under him. A better support system.
The more Maxwell looked at the now bandaged up Andrew, the more fury filled him. How dare they harm his beta? How dare they change him against his will? If there was anyone he’d ever met in his life that didn’t want to be an alpha or an omega, it was Andrew. The fact that not only had he been changed into an alpha, but a true alpha?
It was deplorable. The worst part of it all was that he was going to need his parent’s help given how much personal power he had right now. It made him sick to his stomach to have to reveal Andrew to them, but he knew he was going to have to do so. If he didn’t get on this soon enough, more people could be hurt, even killed.
He didn’t care about that aspect, but he knew Andrew would. So as much as he hated it, he’d have to contact his father. If he spoke to his brothers or his mother first, there’d be too many questions. And they’d swarm the house. Andrew needed time to heal. To recover. His father was the least likely out of them to storm his home for answers.
"Andrew? What are you doing?" Maxwell, who had been pacing in the dining area to give Andrew some time to himself, stopped when he heard shuffling on the couch.
"Oh, I was thinking of heading to bed. My head is dropping, and I think those rut suppressants have finally kicked in." Andrew turned a grin towards Maxwell, and his heart squeezed. He’d worried he’d never see that smile again. He clenched his fist tightly.
He would make sure that he was able to keep that smile for the rest of his life.
"Here, let me come help." Andrew chuckled, shaking his head. The bruises and puncture wounds on him made Maxwell want to punch a wall, but he held it in. The damn Doctor had sworn that they were only superficial. They would heal with time. He just had to be patient.
Maxwell was not easily a patient man. His father’s genetics had made sure of that.
"My, how kind of you Max." Andrew teased, and Maxwell felt his shoulders relax. Maxwell reached the man on the couch, and he could tell now that he was closer that was fading fast. He was rapidly blinking his eyes, and his expression was soft, almost like he was already asleep.
Maxwell did his best to help Andrew to the bed, but there was only so much he could do given that he was a giant of a man. Oh god, hopefully he didn’t grow more. That would be a nightmare. A man hitting another growth spurt in his early 30s?
The man already towered over him, and lots of others, getting any taller would be a nightmare. But that Dr. Smith did say there was a chance he could have...things happen to him. He was still upset at the man for not giving them any more information. He’d have to look it up himself once Andrew fell asleep.
Andrew was blinking rapidly, trying to keep his eyes open. Maxwell wondered how long he’d been awake, but shook that thought away. They’d find out more after. Right now, Andrew’s health took priority.
Softly, Maxwell placed Andrew’s head on a pillow, before taking off his glasses and placing them on the end table next to his head. Andrew sighed, his shoulders relaxing into the bed and Maxwell watched as he quickly fell asleep. Tucking him in, Maxwell only hesitated a second before kissing him in the forehead.
Flustered at the simple action, Maxwell rushed back out into the living room, checked and made sure that the doors were locked, and the security system was up, before heading upstairs to the office he hated to use. It was time to do some research.
~
Maxwell wanted somewhere for all of this anger to go. He knew that if he didn’t get to a shooting range, or something similar in the next week, he might actually commit murder with his own hands. He was strong when compared to the average person, but when put against an alpha? He was nothing. A weak child, and that alone made him pissed.
Andrew was in for a goddamn ride.
True alphas were far more animalistic compared to their normal alpha compatriots. Sharpened, elongated canines, taller, more muscular by nature, the reflective, glowing eyes. They also knotted. Like fucking dogs.
Now, that wasn’t an uncommon practise, since most alphas did that during their ruts if they got too excited, but with true alphas? They had more of a chance to do it outside of their ruts, especially if they are feeling strong emotions. They had heightened senses, along with the power to suppress other alphas if they were, Maxwell didn’t know, but the articles and papers he’d read made it sound like they were a higher class or something?
There were several of these that made Maxwell worried. Especially since he was already showing signs of a few of them. If his canines elongated, what did that mean? Was Andrew going to lose his teeth or some shit and new teeth would grow in? That wasn’t normal for humans, but his genetic code had been played with. His dick didn’t knot before this, so what did that mean for it?
Maxwell was just full of worries. Most of them focused on Andrew.
Glancing at his phone, he noticed the several text messages asking if Maxwell was okay. From his mother, his brothers, and his father. All because he’d called a Doctor to his house. A cold shiver went down his spine.
They were too nosy for their own good, but he couldn’t hide Andrew from them anymore. He needed at least one of them to know so that when Maxwell had to leave for work, Andrew was taken care of. At least until he could function on his own.
Taking a calming breath in, he released it before he picked up the phone and pressed his father’s name. Pressing the call button, he held the phone up to his ear, getting to his feet. He had a feeling he was going to need to pace to get through this.
"Maxwell. You ignore all of our messages and elect to call me. To what do I owe the pleasure?" His father’s dry voice over the phone made him clench his hand.
"Father, I was simply calling because you all seemed to be so concerned about my personal life, so I wanted to calm your worries." Maxwell answered, his tone tart. His father’s chuckle filled his ears.
"Alright. Go ahead then." Maxwell hated when he spoke to him like this. Like he was still a child. He basically ran his own company, just under the affiliation of his Father’s last name. It was demeaning and upsetting that he was still treated like this.
"Well, I want to make sure that you know that I am not the one who needed the Doctor." He wasn’t even able to get the next sentence out without his father interrupting him.
"So who did, Maxwell?" His lips tightened before he spoke.
"My friend."
"A friend? You? You have a friend in your house?" Maxwell sighed at his tone, and pushing his hair out of his face.
"Yes, Father, I have friends. In fact, we only became friends because he lives next door."
"There is a man in your house at this hour and you had to call a Doctor for them?" Why did he sound so upset? Maxwell hated this. His brother’s never got this kind of treatment.
"I’m a grown ass man. So what if I have a man in my house at this time of night? Why does that bother you?" He shot back, hearing a heavy sigh on the other side of the phone. Maxwell almost hung up then and there, but calmed himself down. He needed to get through this phone call. It was important to Andrew.
"I am well aware you are a grown up, but I just worry for you. Any man could be a danger to you." Did he really need to have anyone on his side? Couldn’t he just do this on his own? "You said your friend needed a Doctor? Why was that?" As if his father could tell Maxwell was fuming, his tone softened. Maxwell tried to be calmer. His temper never helped him.
"He was...." Maxwell had a hard time getting the words out. He exhaled slowly, shakily, before trying again. "Do you remember how in the last week I’ve been a little preoccupied?"
"Yes, you’ve been working on investigating a couple of scientists as well as our top competitor. At least in your field. I meant to ask about that." Maxwell nodded.
"Well, my friend works for that company. Or, worked, I should say. I’ve been working up the courage to try to tempt him to our side, but he seemed so content there that I had a feeling anything I offered wouldn’t be enough. That was, until a little over a week ago when they had a huge data breach."
"I know nothing about that." His father said, and Maxwell chuckled.
"I found it surprising too. If you knew my friend, you’d know that there was no way he could have done it. He just cares too much about what he does to do any kind of espionage. But, his company that he had been working for decided that he was the only person who could have done it because of his tall stature, and put him on leave without pay while they investigated it. His girlfriend of the time even turned against him." His father’s curse on the other side relieved some of the pain in Maxwell’s chest. He was glad to hear that others were pissed at what happened to Andrew.
