Chapter 184: side story- Andrew and Dianna
Andrew felt like the time passed too quickly. He couldn’t really remember the time as it passed. He was so focused on the little things. On spending time with his Mom, on the classes she forced him to take, on the outings she forced him to go to with his university friends.
He honestly couldn’t give a flying fuck about the people around him. He just wanted to make sure that she was supported, that she was well. His anger only burned brighter for the sperm donor that was his father as time continued to pass and he’d only send those damn fucking blue hydrangeas.
Twisting more and more blades into his Mom’s already damaged body. He just wanted that fucker to leave them alone. Andrew knew he was already disappointed he didn’t turn out like an alpha like him, so why couldn’t he just wipe his hands of them? Was it pride? Or something more nefarious?
He was already the reason that he was losing his Mom early, couldn’t the man take the hint and leave them both the fuck alone? Andrew had barely spoken to him when he had been around, and he certainly wasn’t going to speak to him now.
He remembered a moment when the fucker suggested that he could pay for surgery to correct his eyesight. He saw a kid having glasses as a flaw big enough to pay someone to operate on him. As a child. The man didn’t give a goddamn about them.
Andrew was still filled with rage thinking about how much his Mom had suffered through because of this man. And now he was taking her away from him.
He didn’t bring these thoughts up to his Mom. At least, he tried not to. He knew that it upset her to even talk about him, or at least when Andrew spoke about it. He hoped that she had friends at work that should talk about how much of a piece of shit he was. He truly prayed for it.
She was already working so hard for him, even as her body was beginning to fail her. She had to use a cane now, her left knee starting to go. Andrew was already getting the apartment ready for when they needed to get a wheelchair. He still lived at home, at his Mom’s insistence when he started school, but now he was grateful for it.
He was going to be her fulltime caregiver. There was no way he was going to allow anything else to do it since he was literally going to school to become a doctor. If he couldn’t help his Mom, he had no right to help anyone else’s family.
Andrew knew his friends were worried about him. The ones he trusted, Michael, Richard, Maria, Katie, Fiona and Jess, had been told not the full story, but the abridged one. Richard knew everything, having been his neighbour for a greater portion of their childhoods, but the others were told that his Mom was dying, and Andrew wasn’t sure how much longer she had.
Maria had been devastated for him. It was only made worse since she was supposed to be moving away. She made sure to visit Andrew’s Mom whenever she was home from work, and offered to help her out in whatever way she could.
Andrew’s Mom had only asked that she bring over the baby so that she could spend time with little ones while she could. She liked babies, and since she wasn’t going to see Andrew’s, she wanted to see his friend’s kids while she could.
Maria and Andrew had cried in the bathroom after his Mom had gone to sleep, tired because of the medication the Doctor’s were giving her.
The others were helping out where they could. Michael made sure he had any notes he needed for classes, same with Katie. Fiona and Jess, who came from more traditional families, made sure that they could help out in other ways. Andrew always had food delivered to the house, bath salts and other things to help his Mom relax at hand, and Jess had even sent over a ton of hydrangeas in colours that his Mom loved.
Andrew felt loved. He felt grateful. He had no way to be able to pay them back for everything that they were doing for him, and the guilt began to weigh him down.
He couldn’t talk to anyone about it. About how he felt like a bad son for not being able to provide this kind of care on his own, that it was happening so soon, and that he had nothing to pay back the friendships he’d made back.
He knew it was a silly thought. People didn’t enter into friendships to get paid back for them, but he was an emotional mess. Especially as the days trickled on, like sand through an hourglass, and his Mom’s condition worsened.
Andrew didn’t even get to be a caretaker for his Mom. She took a turn for the worst and had to be hospitalized. That terrified him, since the cost would be something she worried about but when he tried to speak to her about it, his Mom had simply smiled at him, taking his hand in hers.
She had grown thinner as time went on. Her gorgeous blonde hair slowly thinning and falling out until Andrew couldn’t take it anymore and had splurged on an expensive wig for her. Just so that she could feel like herself. She had cried when he’d given it to her, but she had worn it every day since.
Her blue eyes, pools of love and affection, stared at him from sunken, tired skin. She didn’t look like herself. She was still his Mom though, but her memory had started to go as well. Sometimes she’d stumble or stutter over her words, a look of confusion crossing her face as she tried to remember what she was saying, where her words were going.
It was...hard. It was hard to watch as this disorder she had began to steal parts of her. He tried not to think about how preventable it was, because if he did, it would ruin what time he had left with her. He had plenty of time to stew about it. Later.
Not now.
"My sweet, sweet boy." His Mom began, her hand squeezing his. It was so light, it felt feather-soft. Like a baby bird. Andrew swallowed thickly. "You do not need to worry about the hospital stay. I would never burden you with that kind of debt."
"It’s not a burden." Andrew started, interrupting her and she gave him a pointed look, slapping his hand lightly.
"It is a burden. It has ruined people lesser than us, and better than us as well." She told him warningly, and Andrew nodded. Medical debt was something that could ruin your life. Even as someone who wanted to help others and planned to go into the medical field, it was a fact that he still didn’t like. He considered moving to another country to practise just so that he could feel his work didn’t kill someone in a different way.
What was the point in saving someone’s life only to kill them financially?
"Yes Mom." He answered and she sighed.
"Baby boy, I have enough put away to make sure you will never be burdened." Andrew stared at her, taking in her sallow skin, the constant beep of the machine in the room with them, the monitors covering the walls and space around them. She was in a private room. He had an idea of how expensive this was. Was she using his money? Andrew wouldn’t protest.
He had done this to her, it was only right that he suffered too.
"Even if it’s months?" He asked carefully and her lips turned up slightly. She reached out her free hand, her arm weighed down by an iv and pinched his cheek.
"You brat. What do you think I worked so hard for? I knew something like this was possible, so I planned for the worst case scenario." She smiled at him, sighed slowly. "It truly is the worst case scenario. I had hoped to make it to your wedding at the very least. I also will not accept a shotgun wedding to someone you don’t even like to appease me." She warned as soon as Andrew began to open his mouth.
He shut it quickly. He knew his friends would do that for him, without hesitation. They also would do it for his Mom as well. While she was busy, his Mom had always helped out his friends, especially his omega ones. She was always going further and farther beyond. She had even checked in with a few of them personally, getting their phone numbers and checking in with them.
She was a good woman. They would gladly get married, throw a party, whatever she needed to feel like she was leaving Andrew in good hands. Andrew was tearing up already thinking about it.
"Why not? It’s just a big party with fancy clothes." Andrew said with a sniff and she gave him a tender smile.
"Andy, I want you to find someone who makes you happy. Truly, really happy. You have so much to offer someone, and I just want that person to know how precious you are. You are so kind, caring and thoughtful. You would do anything for me, and I love and adore you for that. But don’t get married for my sake." She chuckled. "You can throw a party though. I wouldn’t mind that. I’d like to be in attendance for one more before my time comes." She sounded like she was joking, but it was only seconds later she was holding onto Andrew’s hand as pain ate her from the inside out.
Andrew was on a timeline. They both were, and the damn grains of sand were draining out of the hourglass faster than he had originally thought. There had to be a hole somewhere, and as much as it hurt Andrew to realise that, he wanted to do anything for her.
Once the pain had passed, he raised her hand to his lips, pressing a kiss there before he pulled her close, offering her comfort.
"Do you want me to ask Maria to come over and help you pick out a dress from your closet?" He asked carefully and felt her nod. Andrew did his best to hide the pain he felt. "I’ll text her once you fall asleep, and check in with the Doctors to make sure it’s okay. Get some sleep Mom, it’s okay. Your body is tired." Andrew told her and he knew she’d gone to sleep when her body went lax.
Andrew sat there, watching her breathe for another five minutes before he set about doing the task he was asked.
They did end up having a party. He let her make the guest list, and several people showed up. Andrew had no idea who some of them were, even if they knew him. He couldn’t actually remember anyone’s face from that night, just focused on his Mom and her happiness.
It was two months later that she passed.
