Chapter 183: Side story- Andy and Dianna
*I’m going to be honest with you guys. I am currently travelling, and my flight has been cancelled so I am stuck in an airport. I do not feel comfortable writing sexy, smutty scenes in public like this, so I am going to have to hold off on doing that kind of Chapter. Instead, I am going to do something else. We will pick up the story, hopefully, in two Chapters. But for now, please enjoy.*

Andrew felt like the ground was sinking out from underneath him.
He listened to what the Doctor was saying, but for the first time, he didn’t feel like he could comprehend it. That couldn’t be true. His Mom was the strongest, most powerful person he ever knew.
She wasn’t dying. There was no way that this was happening.
When Andrew looked at his Mom, trying to see how she felt about this, worried about what kind of face he should make, Andrew had another shock rock his body.
She didn’t look surprised. If anything, she looked...relieved?
What? Why would she look relieved? This was nothing to be relieved about! This was something horrible, this was something that would damage them for the rest of their lives. For the rest of-
A sharp, hard, hot pain filled his chest and Andrew felt like the walls were closing in. Andrew felt like he had a hard time breathing, his vision was blurring. Andrew knew he could pass out, and the Doctor was moving towards him in slow motion, concern on his expression.
In the next moment, Andrew was on the floor, his head in between his knees, his Mom’s hand on his shoulder and the Doctor walking him through deep, calming breaths. Andrew knew he was over-reacting. His Mom should be the one who is reacting this way. She should be the one who is crumbling.
Instead, like always, she was the one who was being strong for the both of them.
"Andy, baby, it’s alright." Her voice washed over him, but Andrew couldn’t stop shaking. There was this awful, wailing sound coming from somewhere, and in his dazed confusion, Andrew didn’t realise where it was coming from.
After a few moments, Andrew realised that it was him. He was wailing. He was sobbing uncontrollably. The noises and the reason his body was shaking was because he was the one doing it.
Andrew turned his blurry vision towards his Mom, unable to see her through his tears and she reached out cupping his face with her hands. Her skin was already sunken, her blue eyes bright against the white of her pale skin. Her blonde hair was pulled up in a complicated knot at the base of her neck. Combined with her formal attire, she looked like she hadn’t just heard that she was on more of a timeline then everyone else.
She was on a tight timeline.
"No it’s not." Andrew sobbed. "It’s never going to be okay. You’re dying, Mom, and he’s the one who did this to you." Andrew sniffed, trying to compose himself. "Would it matter?" He asked the Doctor. "Would it matter if he showed up now?" He asked urgently, and his Mom sighed. Andrew was sniffing and snorting, tears still streaming down his cheeks.
He didn’t care, it wasn’t the time to. He needed to know the answer. He needed to know if he had to find out who this man was, where he was, and kidnap him to save his Mom. He wouldn’t care if it kept her with him a bit longer.
"Mr. Knox...I’m afraid it’s already progressed too far." The Doctor at least sounded apologetic, but that wasn’t much comfort to Andrew. He gasped, sucking air in as more tears started to fall. His Mom reached out, pulling up his glasses to wipe his tears away with her fingers.
"My baby boy, it’s going to be okay." She whispered but for the first time, Andrew didn’t believe her.
"You’re lying. You’re...you’re unwell because of that bastard and now he can’t even save you? What’s the fucking point of even being associated with him if he can’t even be useful?" Andrew spat. "Did he know? Did he know that this could happen, Mom? Did he know that he could kill you?" From the soft way that the blurry image looked at him, Andrew had his answer. Andrew cursed, jerking away from her touch.
He was too emotional, too angry to be reasonable. He was sure his Mom was upset that he turned away from her, but Andrew felt like his insides were falling out. Twisting, churning, hurting. Andrew continued to gasp, getting closer and closer to a panic attack until finally, Andrew fainted.
~
Andrew woke up to humming, the smell of his Mom’s perfume swirling around his nose. Potent, floral, it made him think he was a child again. Maybe 7, 8 years old, waking up after his Mom had been out all day and she had come back. Her breath smelling slightly sour, her eyes slightly glazed, but a big, goofy smile on her face.
She would sit at the edge of his bed, running her fingers through his hair as he slept. The song wasn’t always the same, but the intention was there. They were nursery rhymes, soft songs meant only for little babies.
When Andrew had been in his rebellious phase, before he noticed that his Mom’s health wasn’t great, Andrew had fought being a baby. He wasn’t just his Mom’s baby boy. He was Andrew, Andy. His Mom should call him by the name he liked.
His Mom had smiled at him, her eyes warm as she pushed back his hair, her blue eyes shining as she looked him over. A good boy, a good son, and a man made from her own flesh and blood. She had never scolded him for his outbursts, and instead had just nodded, smiled, and continued calling him her baby boy.
Andrew grew to know that no matter what, that was what he was going to be to her.
"Are you awake my baby?" His Mom asked softly, and Andrew found himself lying in his bed. He reached to the side, but his Mom handed him his glasses instead, and waited as he pulled them on and scrambled to sit up straight in the bed.
"Mom?" Andrew asked, his voice hoarse. He’d been crying too long. No, Andrew hadn’t cried that much in his whole life. His face felt warm, his eyes swollen, and when he looked at his Mom, she honestly didn’t look that much better.
"Yes my boy?" She asked and Andrew felt his face crumble.
"How long?" He asked the question he didn’t want the answer to. His Mom’s face crumbled, and her shoulders began to shake.
"I don’t want to tell you. You’re going to be cross with me." She told him and Andrew reached for her, holding her tightly.
"Mom, I may be cross, but I need to know. I should take time off school, let them know what’s going on. You take priority, and I need to know how much time I have left with you." Andrew felt like he was begging her, but he couldn’t help it.
This was his Mom, and she was clearly upset. While she had been accepting in the Doctor’s office, Andrew was sure his reaction had certainly not helped her. He would admit, it was a crazy reaction. It might have been an overreaction, but now holding her thin frame, Andrew had a terrible feeling that he knew the answer.
"I’m going to have a year at most. But...he warned me that I’m going to deteriorate quickly." She whispered and Andrew let out a shuddering breath. He closed his eyes, squeezing the small woman in his arms. The woman who had taken care of him for his whole life, who he expected that he would have decades more with.
Who didn’t because of a special condition she had. A condition she had hidden from Andrew until it was far too late for anything to be done. He should be angry at her. He really should, but Andrew couldn’t bring himself to get angry with her.
"A year?" He asked and she jerked her head in a nod. Her face was pressed against his shoulder, her thin arms tight against his body.
"Yeah." She exhaled shakily. "It doesn’t feel like enough time. I have so many things I need to do, but I don’t want to burden you. You need to finish school, Andy, and I don’t want to take away from your university days." She told him and Andrew laughed. It was hard, cruel, and so unlike him that she froze in his arms.
"I would never, ever abandon you when I only have a year left to be with you. University can wait. Everything else can wait. You’re my Mom. You will always have priority." Andrew sniffed. "So? What do you need to do? What do you need me to do? I’ll do anything, everything."
