Chapter 174: Some nobody?

Chapter 174: Some nobody?

Andrew was quite impressed with the actual state of the daycare. It was divided into several spaces, and all of the spaces were geared towards the children, learning and playing. There was a cute nap room, a fake kitchen, several ’classrooms’ as well as a good sized play space for general activities. They had several classes for different age ranges, and it seemed that the people here who worked here were quite qualified.

What Andrew was not impressed with was the manager who was showing them around.

She was...making it very obvious that she was unhappy with them. It was clear that she was looking forward to Mr. Beckett, and not Mr. Knox. It was very disheartening, especially since she was the one who was in charge of the kids.

She had no idea what the kids would amount to. She’d had some success in raising the kids well, but half of that was the fact that the kids came from wealth. Andrew wondered if all of the dollar signs had gone to her head. It was the only thing he could use to justify her behaviour, even if he didn’t like it.

He felt like chopped liver. She barely explained the facilities to him, and if he asked questions, she behaved as if that was the worst thing he ever could have done to her. She was impatient, not letting them linger in a room, and was even worse when she saw an employee. As if she was embarrassed to be showing him around.

The longer this went on, the more tension he could feel from Maxwell’s grip on his hand. At this point, Andrew couldn’t blame the man. He was pissed too.

He kept asking questions though, and kept pushing forward. He was not going to let this lady bully him, even if he had to fight to keep his pheromones under control. Maxwell being beside him the whole time helped, and he was grateful that he’d asked Dr. Cox so many questions over the last two weeks.

That meant he actually had some real questions to ask her. Like play time, snack time, what would happen if someone wasn’t going down for nap time? Simple things, that proved he wasn’t a complete dunce, or hadn’t been around a child older than 12 months.

Which was true. Andrew usually only saw kids while they were still babies before the Moms would get caught up with their lives, he’d get caught up with his life, and then they’d slowly drift apart.

Shaking himself, Andrew stared at the kitchen before him, how it was practically spotless, while having all the same kind of equipment as Maxwell’s, and his eye twitched.

"Where do you get your food sourced from?" Andrew asked and she gave him a strange look.

"Sourced from? We make it here, Mr. Knox." She stated and Andrew felt the straw land on his back.

"I’m sorry, but there is no way that a kitchen in this condition has ever been used for cooking. Where do you get your food sourced from?" Andrew asked. He was glad that he had been so insistent to see the space. His tendencies to want to check out kitchens came from Richard’s Mom.

She said that all kitchens that were filled with love were a little messy. A little imperfect. She had been trying to comfort him and his Mom after another failed attempt at cooking on his Mom’s part, but Andrew had taken that to heart.

It was why he had put in so much work at Maxwell’s, and why he could feel his blood boiling at the sight of the spotless, clean marble countertops. In a freaking daycare. Andrew felt like he was going to lose his damn mind.

He let go of Maxwell’s hand, deliberately stepping into the fucking kitchen and running a finger along a random part of the kitchen. It was spotless, he’d give her that, but it was cold. Clinical.

He felt that even an operating room would have more feeling than this space did.

"That is an awful accusation, Mr. Knox. We cook all meals for the children in our care here, in this kitchen." Maxwell hunched his shoulders, shifting so that he could cross his arms. Only his blue eyes peeked over the edge of the scarf he kept wrapped around his face and from that alone, Andrew could tell he was smiling.

Andrew was fuming. This lying rat. This was what was going to break him. He knew it.

"That’s just not true. This kitchen is barely used. How long have you been in operation?" Andrew demanded and she scoffed.

"We’ve been here for almost ten years now, Mr. Knox." Andrew scoffed. He was pissed. "And I do not like the tone you are using with me." Andrew raised his eyebrows, shocked that she would say that to him.

"Are you being for real right now? You don’t like the tone I’m using with you? During this whole tour you’ve been speaking down to me? Oh, that’s horrible of you to say. Especially when I’m only concerned about the nutrition of the children who attend here. These younger years are incredibly important to children. They can be stunted during this time by not getting the proper nutrition, and if you are claiming that you are making the food here, while outsourcing, that only makes me question what else you are lying about." Andrew scowled at her, and watched as her expression went white.

"That is wholly unfair. You didn’t even allow me time to defend myself!" She protested, smacking her hand against her chest, over her heart. Andrew rolled his eyes, quickly stepping out of the disgrace of a kitchen and grabbing Maxwell’s hand.

"Defend yourself? Why would you need to defend yourself if you haven’t done anything wrong? You didn’t even introduce yourself when you saw us. I can clearly see how you view us, and how you would treat any child I sent here. I am incredibly disappointed, and incredibly upset." Andrew said, marching towards the exit.

The manager was racing after him.

"You never asked!" Andrew halted in his steps, Maxwell bumping into his back and Andrew spun. They were now in view of the other parents and kids, and Andrew was too upset and angry to even care at this point that he was causing a scene around children.

"I never asked? It is common courtesy that you introduce yourself when meeting someone else and you already know their name! Especially if I am planning, or I have family members who were considering placing their children in their care! I am a client, and I cannot believe that this is how you treat them!" Andrew huffed, rolling his shoulders. "I’m surprised you haven’t had a major scandal, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Given what I’ve heard from others, you’ve been using money to deal with all of your problems." Her previous white face went red.

"Now what on earth are you implying by saying that, Mr. Knox?" Andrew turned, waving his hand behind him dismissively as he headed for the doors.

"That’s none of your concern." Andrew told her grimly as Maxwell let him pull him around.

"None of my-I will not have some nobody slander my company’s good name!" She screeched and everyone paused. Andrew halted, his shoulders beginning to shake.

"Some nobody?" He said carefully, turning to face her. His smile was gone, his eyes hard, and he was sure his eyes had flickered to amber. "I haven’t corrected you this whole time because you haven’t offered your name, manager, but it’s Dr. Knox, thank you very much, and I think you have no idea who you’ve offended." Andrew exhaled slowly. "I keep myself out of the limelight, and only recently started coming out of my shell because my partner does not hide themselves. So I suggest you take my warning to heart." Andrew growled, and the bell rang as the door opened.

"I am so sorry I’m late picking up-Andy?" As if to accentuate his words, a familiar voice spoke behind him. Andrew turned, surprise on his features.

"Maria? You’re still in town? I thought you moved away with your mate?" Andrew said, tugging Maxwell closer as Maria raced towards him, wrapping her arms around Andrew’s shoulders.

"Damn, did you get taller? I swear it was always a stretch, but damn, you’ve hit a growth spurt. What happened in the 10 years I haven’t seen you?" She joked, before she stepped back and took a real look at him. Andrew smiled as her eyes widened before he gestured to his teeth.

"Well, some things...happened. I manifested late, Maria." She gasped, covering her mouth.

"No way! You’re an alpha now? Congrats, Andy! Oh, you’re going to make some omega very happy. Not that you couldn’t have done that as a beta, but wow! I mean, everyone always assumed, but you got even bigger! Oh, when I tell Zack he’s going to freak!" Andrew chuckled, pleased to see an old friend.

"Things are working out well between you two?" He asked and she nodded, flushing.

"Really, I should have thanked you more for all that you did for us during that time. We were both so stubborn, and you really put everything into perspective for us. We really can’t thank you enough! And yes, we were away for Zack’s work, but then his Father fell ill and he had to step in with his brothers to start taking over the business. We’re very proud, and we had two more children after Kailey. Two beautiful boys. Trevor and Hewett. I’m actually late today to pick up Hewett. He was our surprise baby." Her expression was filled with so much love that it filled Andrew’s heart.

"Children are a blessing. I’m glad to hear that you two are working out so well, and I’m sorry to hear about Zack’s Dad. Maxy, do you know them?" Andrew asked, turning towards his partner. Maxwell chuckled.

"I know the Johnson family quite well. They’re one of our suppliers. Everyday I learn of more connections you have, Andy." Maxwell teased and Andrew laughed. He turned to Maria, who was clearly curious.

"Maria, this is my partner, Max." Andrew told her and Maxwell offered a gloved hand. Maria took it, shaking it eagerly. "Max, this is Maria. We went to university together and I apparently played a large role in her being with her mate." Maria grinned.

"Large is an understatement. Andy was waiting in the wings to support me if Zack didn’t make it to the delivery room. Thankfully he made it, and Andy was the first one outside of the family to meet Kailey." Maria told him. Andrew brushed it off, a smile on his lips while Maxwell chuckled.

"My Andy has a big heart." Maxwell said and Maria giggled, covering her mouth.

"Oh, isn’t that sweet. You already know so much about him. Treat him delicately, would you? Andy’s just a big teddy bear." Maria teased and Andrew laughed, his expression warm. "So, what brings you two to a daycare?" She gasped. "Wait! Are you an omega? Are you expecting?" She asked, getting excited and Maxwell squeezed Andrew’s hand.

Maria had no idea what Maxwell was because she’d lost her ability to sense pheromones besides her mates after her marking. She was very kind for not making any assumptions, and it appeared that Maxwell liked that about her as well.

"I am, but no, we aren’t expecting. My brother and his mate are, but they’re practically on bedrest for now. So Andy and I decided that we’d tour some daycares for them. Unfortunately, we are not pleased with this one, so we’re going to take our business elsewhere. A shame, really, since it’s so close to my parents place. It would have been great for Ben if my Mom and Dad could have picked up the child after they are born from daycare. We’ll just have to figure something else out." Maxwell said with a shrug, and Maria furrowed her brows.

It was clear that the manager didn’t want to interrupt, since it was becoming evident that something wasn’t quite right about the pair she had treated poorly. Andrew really wanted to jab home that she had severely fucked up, but he didn’t want ot use Maria as the bouncing pad for that.

He glanced at Maxwell, concern in his expression and Maxwell met his gaze. Maria was glancing between them, before the cry of a small child could be heard. She went white.

"Oh god! Hewett! Mommy’s coming, baby!" Maria rushed off and Andrew sighed, feeling conflicted. Maxwell, however, didn’t feel conflicted in the slightest.
