Chapter 173: A silent warning

"I-Is this it?" Andrew asked. They had already pulled to a stop. He should know that this was where they were headed, but he couldn’t help himself. He felt like he was nervous enough for the both of them.

Maxwell’s chuckle next to him from the driver’s seat had him tearing his gaze away from the skyscraper before him and Maxwell was watching him. His blue eyes danced, his expression soft as he kept a hand on the steering wheel, using it to turn his body to face Andrew.

"Baby, we are here. Do you need a few minutes to collect yourself? You look like you’re about to pass out. If any kids are still inside, they’re going to be terrified of you." He said and Andrew swallowed.

He was probably right, but he just felt so nervous. He’d never done something like this before. He’d never even been near daycares before. Sure, he’d gone into a cafe or something and scouted out if an alpha was okay for an omega friend a couple of times, but this wasn’t the same.

"What if she finds out and she hates me?" Andrew asked desperately and Maxwell’s expression softened.

"We go with the plan that I asked you to do this with me. Or Amir asked us to. Worse case scenario, we reveal that we’re planning to add a daycare to the company. If she still is upset, you just have to shower her with baked goods. No one can be upset about that, now can they?" Maxwell’s soft words were comforting, but Andrew still felt like he was on edge.

"What if she has allergies and I give her stuff she’s allergic to?" He asked and Maxwell tried his best not to laugh.

"Then you apologise and ask her what her allergies are." Andrew’s lips trembled.

"What if she refuses to tell me?" Andrew asked and Maxwell reached his free hand out, grabbing Andrew’s chin.

"Baby." Maxwell started. "Who am I?" He asked sweetly and Andrew swallowed thickly.

"M-My partner." Maxwell nodded, smiling.

"And what’s my name?" He asked.

"Maxwell Beckett." Andrew could feel Maxwell’s pheromones wrap around his throat, causing his body to come to attention. Maxwell’s smile reached his eyes.

"Yes. Good boy. Last question. Do you think something as simple as food allergies, or other kinds, is something I wouldn’t be able to find out?" Andrew shook his head, staring at the lovely creature before him. Maxwell smiled, leaning over and kissing Andrew’s lips. "Good. So don’t worry about something like that. I’m here to help. Plus, we could use the cafeteria as an excuse to get a list of something like that. You just worry about being a big, intimidating sweetheart, alright?" Andrew nodded and Maxwell rewarded him with another kiss.

Andrew blinked a few times, before he began to take a few deep, stabilizing breaths. Maxwell watched him do so, his eyes never leaving his face.

"Do you feel better?" He asked when it appeared that Andrew had calmed himself down. "Good. Now, am I taking the lead in here or are you?" He asked and Andrew flinched.

"Uh, I should, shouldn’t I?" Andrew asked in return and Maxwell chuckled.

"Whatever you want, Baby. I promise. I’m here to support you, but I don’t mind testing the waters first. It’s whatever you want." Maxwell was being so supportive that Andrew felt like he wanted to cry. He didn’t, but he did sniffle. Maxwell smiled at him, his touch on Andrew’s chin sliding up to cup the back of his head. "Are you a big baby right now?" Maxwell asked carefully and Andrew felt his calm begin to crack.

"I’m not a big baby. I just...I’m very appreciative of you being so supportive of this. It’s making me emotional." Andrew sighed. "If we don’t leave this car now, I’m afraid we’ll never leave." Andrew muttered. Maxwell’s eyes narrowed.

"Well, I could think of a few things I’d want to do in the car instead." He told him quietly. "I made sure that there are condoms in the car now. In the glove box." Maxwell licked his lips and Andrew felt his body heat instantly.

"W-We’re already late. Let’s get to the meeting, shall we? I-I’ll take the lead." Andrew told him and Maxwell pressed a chaste kiss against his lips.

"There’s my Dr. Knox. Let’s go, Darling." Maxwell pulled on his hat and scarf, before he opened the door. Andrew followed after him, without the scarf and hat and took Maxwell’s offered hand quickly. They made their way across the small parking lot where several sets of parents and nannies were picking up small children.

The building itself was the standard skyscraper shape. Andrew was sure it cost a fortune to build, and make sure it was safe for all of the rich people who were living in it. There were a few shops underneath. A coffee shop, what appeared to be a luxury brand store, and then the daycare. The daycare was bright, welcoming, and a different vibe compared to the other two stores.

It was a smart idea, especially given that they could advertise themselves as a fancy daycare just by being in this area. Andrew wondered how they were different compared to other daycares besides the clients that they had. Was there any difference?

Nervous all over again, Andrew squeezed Maxwell’s hand and Maxwell squeezed back. It was a small thing, but it helped soothe his soul.

"Worst case scenario, we can always slip over to my parents condo and raid my Father’s whiskey cabinet. He’d understand if we explained the situation." Maxwell whispered and Andrew chuckled. He doubted that would be the case, but he appreciated Maxwell’s offer.

His words helped Andrew, and with that, they made their way towards the door. Feeling a little awkward as they moved past the parents and nannies waiting to pick up children, Andrew went for the door directly and opened it.

There were several people inside. Mostly parents and nannies helping the kids they were picking up into their outerwear while a few employees milled about. They helped the parents, but let the nannies suffer with the children on their own.

Not a good sign right out of the gate.

"Um, hello. How may I help you?" One of the employees asked and Andrew tensed. She was a smaller, plumper woman and Andrew could tell she was an omega. She seemed sweet enough, if not a little confused as to why they were inside when it was already a small entryway.

"Oh. We had an appointment set for today to view the daycare. We’re a little late, so I apologise for that." Andrew flashed a smile, unaware that he was also flashing his sharp, new teeth. The parents who were, presumably, from rich families, stared at him in shock.

He radiated true alpha for miles, but who was the wrapped up omega next to him? Why had no one seen him before?

"Forgive me! We knew that there was someone coming to view, but I wasn’t told the name. Could you tell me who you are, and your purpose for visiting?" Andrew was sure that they did know who he was, and why he was here. He furrowed his brows, but was polite.

There was no reason not to be.

"My name is Andrew Knox, and we’re here to visit in place of a family member who’s on bedrest. Doctor’s orders. They trust our opinion, and I was interested in seeing what you had done with the place." Andrew said with a smile. He didn’t think that was too heavy-handed, but it seemed that it made the omega speaking to him nervous.

"Um, let me go grab my manager. I’ll be right back, Mr. Knox." Maxwell’s hand tightened on Andrew’s. Andrew didn’t need to be a mind reader to tell that Maxwell wasn’t happy with the way they were treating him. Andrew didn’t mind. This was the whole reason he’d come.

To see how they treated people that they didn’t think were rich enough to attend their daycare.

"Of course." Andrew said warmly, letting her scurry away as a few of the parents watched them quietly. Andrew could feel everyone’s gaze on him, including several kids who were waiting to be picked up by their parents. A few seemed greatly displeased to see him, while a few seemed to scrunch up their noses at him.

Andrew didn’t mind, and waved at the kids, smiling. He liked kids usually. He didn’t have a lot of experience with them though. He had a lot of experience with babies, though.

Several of the kids ran away and Andrew sighed.

"Is it because I smell?" He muttered to himself. Kids didn’t used to run away from him. Maxwell trembled beside him, clearly laughing at him, and Andrew frowned. He’d find out what he was laughing about later.

It was around that time that another woman, a beta, arrived. She was slightly older, her expression more stern, but her clothes and hair in their perfect place. Already Andrew felt that wasn’t quite right. If she was the manager of anything but a daycare, that might make him feel relieved. But this was a daycare. A place where kids played.

She should be in as much disarray as the other employees. If she was a good manager.

"Uh, hello Mr. Knox. I hear that you and your partner are here to view the space?" She said and Andrew nodded.

"Yes. We made an appointment about two weeks ago to view today." He said with a smile and she appeared slightly...annoyed.

"Well, I’m afraid we might have double booked you. We are expecting...someone else to view the space at this time. You’ll have to wait." Andrew couldn’t believe it. There were several people working here, and only some of the employees were helping anyone receive their children.

They weren’t even talking to the parents, or confirming that they were taking the right kids.

Andrew knew damn well that they were who they were waiting for, but wanted to see how this played out.

"Oh, I’m so sorry." Andrew said, covering his mouth. She seemed to grow...confused.

"What are you sorry about, Mr. Knox?" She asked and Andrew sighed.

"Well I had no idea you were so understaffed that you couldn’t do two tours at the same time. Especially given the fact that whoever else you are waiting on hasn’t arrived yet." Her expression stiffened and Maxwell squeezed his hand next to him. Andrew did his best to look apologetic as he glanced down at Maxwell. "Maybe we should let your brother know that. After all, he’s already worried enough since this is their first child." Andrew told him. Maxwell, seeming to catch on, nodded.

Maxwell wasn’t dumb. He noticed that Andrew hadn’t corrected his title, nor was he using last names that were easily recognizable. Maxwell also had grown up in this society. He knew damn well the power struggle that was going on right now.

"We are not understaffed, Mr. Knox." The manager seethed and Andrew batted his eyes, playing innocent.

"Oh? So then it wouldn’t be a problem to show us around while you wait for the other important client who showed up late to their viewing too? Who knows? They might even show up after we’ve gone through the daycare, hmm?" Andrew suggested and she seemed pissed. He was putting on a show, and if she denied him so obviously with other customers around, she’d look terrible.

Her mouth twitched as she pulled it up into a smile and she gestured to the main entrance.

"What a great suggestion, Mr. Knox. I shall show you around then while Rebecca waits for our other couple. Please remove your shoes." She said, and Andrew did his best not to laugh. Maxwell was holding it in as well.

He hadn’t been this underestimated in a long time. He usually nipped something like this in the bud right away. He hadn’t been rich before, but he’d been big and qualified. He was more than happy to throw around his weight if he needed to. He just happened to have more weight to throw this time.

And for a good cause. This was all for a good cause. It appeared already, that Dr. Cox had made the right call to take her child out of this daycare. He just needed to know how right she had been, and what they could avoid when opening up their own daycare.
