Chapter 168: Maxwell’s first smoke break in a while
Maxwell exhaled slowly, staring out at the dark yard in front of him. The lights from the house behind him casting everything in severe shadow. The smoke from his lips curled up, dispersing into the air as he wrapped his arm around himself.
Slowly, Maxwell tapped his cigarette into the tray nearby, continuing to stare out at the night sky before him as he let his thoughts run over him easily. Nothing really stuck for a long moment, his body too satiated for the thoughts that normally plagued him to settle their hooks in.
Fuck. Andrew certainly knew how to fuck the worry out of him. He also knew how to surprise him, and make him feel things he didn’t want to.
It made him uncomfortable how easily he was able to read him now. He knew that it would come with time, but it still made him uneasy. What if Andrew came across something he didn’t like? God, that would be awful.
His plan would fail. He wanted Andrew well and truly ensnared in him before he showed him all of his bad sides.
Maybe that was why he was so hesitant to go to the Doctor. Mmm, no, that wasn’t the reason. He’d always hated going to the Doctors. Maxwell had some resistance going to the Doctors ever since his Grandfather had stormed one of his visits when he was a kid. He’d been a child, and they had been doing an ultrasound on his uterus.
It had been a horrifying moment, and Maxwell was pretty sure he’d never recovered. It was shortly after that that his Dad had lost his mind on his Grandfather and sent him, and his men, packing. He’d never seen his Mom as mad as she had been at that time.
Even his Grandfather had been afraid of her.
Maxwell let out another puff of his cigarette, staring out at the forest.
It didn’t feel like only a short while ago Andrew had come stumbling through those woods to him, naked and covered in wounds. Maxwell moved his hand, bringing it into the light to stare at the two hands before him. With these hands he’d caught the giant man, carried him into the house and bathed him. He’d taken care of him.
And now, Andrew was his.
The likelihood that Andrew was going to go to anyone else was low, but not quite zero. Maxwell hadn’t marked him appropriately yet, and even if he was sure, Andrew was still dealing with some emotional trauma that he hadn’t even spoken to Maxwell about.
Maxwell wasn’t stupid. He knew something was up. He always had. Even before Andrew manifested, Andrew had always been weird about markings. Maxwell couldn’t blame him, especially after what Andrew had told him about his Mother and how good of a person she was.
It took a lot for a person like Andrew to turn his back on someone blood related to him. It was just something Maxwell knew in his gut. The fact that Andrew didn’t even want to know his father’s real name? God, the man must be worse then his fucking ex.
Which Maxwell wasn’t sure was possible.
Maxwell took another puff of his cigarette, sighing after he did so.
So Andrew really wanted him to go to the Doctors. He must have been really shaken up about what happened previously. Maxwell, obviously, didn’t remember what happened. But he felt fine. His body didn’t ache, he didn’t feel strange. In fact, he felt better than ever.
Except for the fact that he’d wanted Andrew to plant a baby in him without anyone’s consent, but he was sure that was just...a small thing.
Nothing too big. Nothing to worry about. But, he knew that if he said no, Andrew wouldn’t settle down. Andrew gave in quite a bit to Maxwell’s demands, he knew that, but Andrew was also stubborn. He probably would never leave this issue alone, especially from the way he’d brought up the topic.
And his threats.
Shit. He was going to have to go to the Doctor. No doubt they’d want to do a check up since it’d been a while. He was going to hate every minute. Maybe he could-no, he shouldn’t take Andrew with him. As much as he was doing much better, a hospital was a completely different thing.
It was full of smells, people who were ill, and other awkward situations. He didn’t want to set him off. Maybe he could....wait in the car?
God, look at him. All lovesick over one guy. The previous Maxwell would have laughed at the current one. That Maxwell was intent on remaining alone. Satisfying his heats with one off alphas and dropping them once they got too attached.
Now here he was, trying his best to wrap one man around his finger, and he didn’t even care that he was an alpha. He just wanted him. The fact that he was an alpha really didn’t mean anything to Maxwell.
Another puff, another train of thought.
Andrew wanted to open a daycare at his company. And a cafeteria. Maxwell chuckled to himself. If he hadn’t said yes, Maxwell felt that Andrew would have gone around with handmade lunches and would have handed them out to whoever wanted them. It was a cute image, the large man in a frilly apron offering up lunches at the front desk to the men and women going on their smoke breaks.
Too bad it wouldn’t happen in real life.
Mm. Well...Maybe he could convince the man to wear an apron for him at a later date. Maxwell was a little upset about the reason behind him wanting to open a cafeteria and a daycare. Not that he was upset that he cared about the people in his company.
Who the hell would be upset about a partner wanting to improve something that the other person cared about so much? Maxwell would be the first to admit that he thought his company was going to be the only child he brought into this world, so it was nice that the man who had taken hold of his heart cared about it as well.
He just didn’t want Andrew’s attention to wander, even in the slightest.
He had no idea who this coworker was, but she’d gained his sympathy. He’d have to look into her, make sure that she wasn’t a threat. Not that he ever thought that Andrew’s attention would wander.
Andrew had been loyal to a woman who had hid their relationship from everyone. The man wasn’t built to cheat.
Maxwell just knew he had a catch in his hands, and he didn’t want anyone else to think that there were any kinds of cracks in their relationship. There was no place for anyone to sneak in. No soft spot to needle.
They were going to be perfect together.
So, if Andrew wanted to scout out a fucking daycare, he was going to be the one to go with him. No one else, not even Amir. They’d already been mistaken for a couple once, that was enough for Maxwell. Probably for Ben as well.
Andrew was just...too big, too kind, and too sweet for his own good. If Maxwell let that man be alone near children and other parents for even a second, he knew that omegas and betas and hell, even alphas would be falling over themselves to get a taste of him.
Whether Andrew knew it or not, the man dripped male magnetism. It might not attract everyone, but it had attracted Maxwell. Maxwell knew types like him, so he couldn’t allow those shitheads near him. Andrew was his. Fuck. If he could mark the man, if the roles were reversed, he would have done it on damn day one and spent the rest of the time groveling for forgiveness while being a secret smug motherfucker.
He would have used Andrew’s first heat against him, and he wouldn’t have felt bad about it.
Maybe that spoke volumes against Maxwell’s character, but he’d always been a slimy fuck. There were lines he drew for himself, always had, but he doubted that if he’d been given the chance, he would have been able to resist.
He was sure, even though Andrew wouldn’t have been able to see, that Maxwell was offering up his neck the whole time they had been together right after they had found each other again. He was fairly certain that Andrew didn’t notice, and Maxwell wasn’t going to make a big deal of it.
He could never tell Andrew about this. At least, not yet. Maybe when the man didn’t have so much tied up with markings.
Fuck. He was sure those fangs in the back of his neck would feel so fucking good. Maybe he could settle for a shoulder? His thigh? Mmm, maybe he could convince Andrew that would be fine?
He was well past the point of trying to convince the man to mark him by mistake. Andrew was too smart to fall for it anyways. They’d already spent one heat together, and half of a rut together. If Andrew wasn’t going to ’accidentally’ bite him then, he wasn’t ever going to.
So, Maxwell would bide his time. Go to the fucking Doctor, and just...be in love with the man who he wanted to own and give everything to. And just pray that someday, sometime, Andrew would realise that Maxwell wasn’t like his Mom, and that he wasn’t like his father.
Maxwell put out his cigarette, lifting up the jacket to inhale the scent of the man who filled his thoughts. Damn. It was time to head inside.
