Chapter 167: We need to take care of each other
Maxwell was so freaking adorable.
Andrew watched the man as he stuffed his face after their several hour long romp. He was cultured, of course, each movement he made practised, and elegant, but he was definitely stuffing his mouth full. Andrew enjoyed that he enjoyed his food so immensely.
Andrew knew he was watching him more than he should be. His face was resting against his hand as he leaned against the table, watching him consume the food he’d made for him. Even after all that they had done, Andrew was still having a hard time keeping his hands off of him.
In fact, he was already imagining shoving all the food out of the way and having his wicked way with Maxwell on the table, but he knew better. Even if the image of Maxwell spread wide against the wooden table, the plates and cutlery scattered around as he looked up at Andrew with surprise, and desire, as Andrew ate him up as greedily as Maxwell was eating up his dinner. Even so, he knew better.
Maxwell needed to eat. He needed his energy. He had a very important job, and it would make Andrew feel horrible if he didn’t get the protein that he needed all because of his selfish desires. Maxwell was busy, and very important.
"Oh! Maxy, do you know if Amir and Ben are thinking about looking at daycares already?" Andrew asked and Maxwell gave him a curious look.
"Why would they be looking already? Amir’s only gone for his first official ultrasound at this point, and they’re both so cautious that they wouldn’t want to risk anything too stressful for him." Maxwell made a good point, and Andrew sighed, turning his attention back to his own food.
"Ah. You’re completely right. I knew that, but I was hopeful that I could use that to check something out." Maxwell gave him a curious look.
"Why would you need to use Amir to check on something?" Maxwell asked, his cheeks slightly full from the food in his mouth. Andrew had to do his best not to smile.
"Well, you remember that I brought up one of my new coworkers and how she has a child, yes?" Maxwell, growing suspicious, shifted in his seat.
"Are you about to put your nose in something you shouldn’t, Dr. Knox?" Andrew winced. That wasn’t a good sign.
"W-Well, I was just curious, you know? She’s a beta, and she worked really hard to get her daughter into that daycare. It’s in the base of one of the towers near where your parents live, so apparently a lot of rich kids go there. She wanted the best for her daughter, and I thought if I could just...use Amir as a reason to go check it out, that would be a good enough excuse." Andrew sighed. "Apparently, she doesn’t take kindly to help, so I wanted to do something without getting in trouble. Amir was the first option I could think of." Maxwell frowned, thoughtful. He put his fork down, dabbing at the corners of his mouth with his napkin.
"And so that was the reason you brought up childcare huh? To shove it to a daycare center for rich kids?" Andrew opened his mouth to protest, but the smirk on Maxwell’s lips told him that he wasn’t in trouble for it.
"Well...I was sure that didn’t influence me asking about her, but now I can’t deny that it would make me happy to do that." Andrew muttered, and Maxwell grinned.
"Andrew. We might make a villain out of you yet. I love that that is an influence for you, and I highly encourage enemies. They help you grow stronger. I am more than happy to help you with that. I’ll have Mr. Newman look into it, since he can, and then we’ll schedule a visit." Andrew blinked.
"What?" He asked and Maxwell sniffed.
"Who said you needed Amir? Why can’t I go with you? Am I not enough arm candy for you?" Andrew was shocked, and his slack jaw showed it. Maxwell chuckled. "What? Is it that shocking? I’ll think of it as field research for when we open our own daycare center." Andrew slapped his jaw closed, covering his mouth.
"I just...I feel like this will cause a bunch of rumours." Andrew muttered, his face flushing. They had only just had the discussion about Maxwell’s desires, and they hadn’t even had time to discuss what Michael had told them. Maxwell needed to go to a Doctor too, but to suddenly thrust him into it-
"I’ll run it past Ben first, but if anyone asks we can say we’re doing it in Amir and Ben’s place. I’m sure they’ll be fine with that, since everyone knows that they want kids." Maxwell smirked. "I can also threaten anyone into silence. Do you think I can’t?" Maxwell asked sweetly and Andrew shook his head quickly.
"I know you can, I just...you haven’t gone to a Doctor yet." Andrew whispered and Maxwell’s eyes widened. His expression softened and he reached for Andrew’s thigh, giving it a squeeze.
"Are you worried about that still?" Andrew nodded at Maxwell’s soft question. Maxwell sighed, giving Andrew’s thigh another squeeze. "You big softie." He told him and Andrew frowned.
"What? Am I not allowed to be concerned about you? You freak out when anything happens to me, so why can’t I when something strange happens to you? I bet you didn’t even tell your family, did you?" Andrew accused, and Maxwell flinched. Andrew knew he was right even without saying it.
"Damn. Alright, I’ll make sure to book an appointment with my Doctor once I finish dinner, alright? I have an omega Doctor who I see occasionally at our hospital. I’ll see if she’s free for a consultation this week." Andrew nodded aggressively to Maxwell’s words, a sense of relief filling him as he heard that.
"Good. I was super worried about it. You were just so...out of it, and I hated it. It was horrible to witness, Max. Really." Andrew tried to tell him how much it had worried him, but Maxwell just smiled.
"Alright, alright. I understand your concern. Don’t worry, I’m sure they’ll lecture me as well." Maxwell joked, but Andrew was serious.
"If you are going to go with me to the daycare, I want you to promise me that you won’t push the Doctor’s visit, Max. I mean it. I’ll go by myself and make a fool of myself before I’ll risk your health. I can feel that you would do it too." Andrew told him, and Maxwell frowned.
"Do you honestly think I would do that?" Maxwell asked and Andrew gave him a look.
"Max, weirder things could happen. I could see you using my appointment to get out of one that would make you feel awkward, especially one around being an omega. You are about as awkward as I am when it comes to actually facing our secondary sex." Maxwell did not like to be called out, but Andrew meant it. "So, do not use me to get out of your appointment, or else I’ll bribe Mr. Newman to keep me in the loop. He’ll do it for me, and not just because my baking is to die for." Andrew threatened and watched as an already adorable Maxwell pouted.
"I wasn’t going to do something like that." Maxwell complained but Andrew gave him a hard look.
"Maybe not the first time since I am sure you are also concerned that something is wrong, but you might do it on the second, or third regular visit. I bet it’s been years since you saw them, right?" Andrew pushed. He knew he was pushing, but he couldn’t help it. This was his Maxwell. He wanted to make sure he was okay. He wanted to make sure that he was well.
He wanted for him to care about himself as much as he cared about Andrew. And...maybe vice versa.
Andrew was doing his best, okay? He just wanted Maxwell to do the same.
"Fuck." Maxwell muttered. "I need a cigarette." He pushed back from the table, fumbling with his robe to make sure it was tied up before he made his way towards the patio door. Andrew frowned.
He’d barely been smoking recently, only really doing it in social settings, and since they had been home together for so long, Andrew was sure he had smoked maybe once or twice in that time. Andrew tried to think back, but he couldn’t actually remember if he smoked at all at Ben’s wedding.
It was concerning that Maxwell felt that he needed to smoke, but Andrew wasn’t going to prod anymore. It was clear that this topic caused him some degree of discomfort, and Andrew didn’t want to aggravate him. He just wanted to...gently annoy him. Get him up. Moving.
That being said, he didn’t want the man to freeze to death while choking on the bad habit of his, so he got up and grabbed him the thickest jacket he could find, pausing Maxwell to wrap him up in the thick fabric.
It was Andrew’s jacket, and Maxwell inhaled the scent before he smiled up at him.
"I’m not mad...I just need a few minutes." Maxwell muttered and Andrew bent, pressing a kiss against his forehead.
"It’s okay. I understand that it’s a lot. I just love you so much that I want you to be healthy." Maxwell glanced down at the pack of cigarettes in his hand and Andrew laughed. "One bad habit at a time, I guess." Andrew said and Maxwell chuckled, shaking his head.
"I’ll only be out here for a few minutes. I’m done with dinner though. If I eat anymore I’m afraid I might burst." Maxwell told him and Andrew sighed.
"Alright. I’ll pack it up. Did you want me to make you a lunch for tomorrow?" Andrew asked him, and Maxwell paused, about to open the patio door before he turned back with a smile.
"That sounds wonderful, actually. Thank you." He told Andrew and Andrew beamed.
"Perfect. I’ll see you in a few minutes."
