Chapter 150: Overwhelmed and underestimated
Chapter 150: Overwhelmed and underestimated
The next few days were a bit chaotic. Andrew had to get ready for going back to work, Michael had to make sure he had all the information he needed to do the job that Maxwell wanted him to do, while also being stable enough to do it.
Andrew saw a lot of Mr. Beckett, whether it was through a screen or in person since he and Maxwell had to hammer out the details of Andrew’s arrival, and the project he would be working on. Andrew wasn’t kept in the dark, but he kind of liked it being a surprise.
Andrew hadn’t seen any backlash from revealing his identity, at least not yet, and in between cramming his mind with information that he needed for his new job, lessons with Michael, he was feeling better already.
He and Maxwell had had another good chat about what he’d done, and what Maxwell had done and smoothed over any issues that either one of them could have had. Both men were anxious, worried that the times that Maxwell had been creampied could have resulted in a child, but neither of them were going to hold their breath.
They were responsible adults, and Maxwell had been honest with him. Andrew wasn’t in the same state of mind he’d been in the last time this happened to him, and he found that the more he thought about Maxwell swollen with his child, it didn’t set off as many alarms as it used to.
He was still terrified to be a Dad. That made his skin crawl, but it was different because the other half of the genes would be Maxwell. That apparently made things different for him.
One thing that had changed is because he had gathered everyone’s phone numbers to send the snippet of the video to them, he was now getting messages from Maxwell’s family, and Amir’s grandparents.
It was actually quite adorable. They would send him photos of where they were, what they were doing, and any of the unrefined jewels that they had found. It was nice to have them chatting with him, and also checking in with him. He sent them photos of what he was doing, including him studying since he had a feeling they would like that.
He felt like an honourary grandson, and it was nice. He’d never had grandparents before.
They made sure that he was eating well, that Maxwell was taking care of him, and that he was doing the same. He’d never even received texts like this from his Mom, but that only made the moment sweeter to him. She’d been too sick to treat him like this in his late teens. He was sure she would love this.
The rest of the family just checked in with him, wondering how he was doing, and if Maxwell was treating him well. He was noticing a theme.
Everyone seemed to worry that Maxwell wasn’t going to treat him well for some reason. Andrew had no idea why. Maxwell had been so extraordinarily kind to him, and he wanted to brag about it. So he often showed off when he was in the kitchen all the tools that Maxwell had gotten him, or replaced because Andrew had broken them by accident.
That meant that Andrew took a lot of photos while he was baking in between studying, and so whenever Mr. Beckett came over, he came over with containers. He’d meekly ask for Andrew to give him a few of the baked goods he’d made since his wife had been asking about them, along with Amir and Andrew would laugh.
They didn’t need to be so meek about it. Andrew made so much fresh baked goods that their freezer was overflowing with things that he’d had to freeze so that they didn’t go bad. It was a good thing to have a lot, since Andrew’s schedule would change once he was going back to work.
He wasn’t going back full time, only three days a week to start. As much as he had been at a wedding and experienced a lot in one night, he’d had Maxwell around. Maxwell acted as a buffer to Andrew, so everyone was acting cautiously. Andrew was listening to them too.
It would do no one any good if he went too fast, too hard, and worried everyone all over again. He didn’t want to see Maxwell crying like that again. It had broken his heart.
All in all, Andrew felt like he was going to be ready for when he went to work. He had his outfit picked out and it still fit. Michael had crammed so much knowledge into his mind that Andrew knew he was going to owe him baked goods for life, and Maxwell’s shoulders had relaxed the more he and his Father spoke. Everything was going to be okay.

Andrew wanted to take it back.
Everything did not feel okay.
Maxwell was laughing at him as he, once again, pulled into a building’s parking lot that he’d only seen from afar before.
"Andy, my parking spot is over there." Maxwell whispered and Andrew swallowed as he jerked his attention to where Maxwell was pointing, and nearly felt faint as he saw the CEO sign embossed in gold against a black background. It was the best parking spot, right outside the giant, glossy sliding glass doors.
Dear lord, he felt like he hadn’t prepared enough.
The building was massive. It had to be the same height as the A & D Firm, but Maxwell informed him that there were several storeys down below that couldn’t be seen. Research labs and the like, where Andrew would be working.
It was a sleek building, beautifully designed, and had every inch of Maxwell’s touch all over it. The planters out front were tasteful, well taken care of, and there were several small sitting areas outside that could be used to take a rest. A smoking area was clearly labeled, marked and used as they pulled up and several employees were there.
Andrew nearly swallowed his tongue when he put the car in park.
"Did I do a bad parking job?" He asked Maxwell, nervous, and Maxwell laughed. He leaned in, pressing a kiss against his nervous boyfriend’s cheek.
"Baby, you could have parked sideways and I would have told you that you did a good job. You’re going to do great. You were the one telling me that you were going to be fine. Are you getting cold feet now?" Maxwell asked and Andrew shook his head aggressively.
"No! It’s not cold feet I just..." He gulped, looking up at the huge building that unlike the firm his Mom had started had no markings of the company that laid inside. God, this felt huge. "I don’t want to give you a bad name." Andrew muttered. "It feels so real now, and I’m worried I’m going to embarrass you." Maxwell’s expression was soft as he looked over Andrew.
Andrew was gripping onto the steering wheel with both hands, his skin pale from the force of his grip. His skin was slightly paler, his big brown eyes huge and filled with worry. His shoulders shook as he sat in the driver’s seat, and Maxwell huffed air through his nose.
"Baby," he began, "you could run through the lobby butt naked, screaming profanities, and I would still claim you as my own. I mean it." Andrew turned wide, giant eyes towards him and stared at him in disbelief.
"No, you wouldn’t!" Andrew was horrified and Maxwell grinned, leaning over and kissing his lips, in full view of the employees in the smoke pit. Andrew worried that they would be shocked.
"I would." Maxwell told him, his lips brushing Andrew’s. "I really would. I would also be mad that anyone looked at you while you were fully naked, but I’d forgive them at least once. You were the one showing your monster off, so I can’t blame them for looking, can I?" Andrew’s face flushed.
"I’m not going to run naked through the lobby, Max." Andrew told him and Maxwell pulled away with a chuckle.
"Good. I didn’t want to be labeled an evil Boss. Now, do you have everything you need? Dr. Smith said he would stop by the office today around lunchtime, so if you’re having any issues, try to hold out until then. If you can’t, find Mr. Newman and he’ll come get me." Andrew nodded as Maxwell fussed over his suit before turning his attention to his own clothes.
Andrew watched him, his heart warm and racing in his chest. This was his first day back to work after over a month off. Gosh, this was going to be overwhelming. Was he going to be able to make friends? Were there any friends he could even make?
Maxwell had told him he was going to work in the more isolated research departments because of his condition. That didn’t mean he wasn’t going to have no one around, right? He still would have at least one coworker, right?
Should he have brought something to give as a gift? Maxwell had told him he didn’t need to, but he was doubting himself now. He should have at least brought some cookies, right? Gosh, this was so stressful!
