Chapter 149: Keep your house husbands happy
Chapter 149: Keep your house husbands happy
Maxwell, when Andrew told him about how he had kind of blown up and exposed himself to the other newly manifested true alphas, was actually not upset at all. He was actually more worried that Andrew was going to regret it, but when they sat down and chatted about it, and Andrew explained why he had done so, Maxwell was very calm about it.
"You’re allowed to make your own choices, Andrew. I just wanted you to feel comfortable as you navigated this new life of yours. If you want to reveal yourself, you are more than welcome to do so. I just wanted to make sure you didn’t do it for any reason that you would regret, or wasn’t for yourself." Maxwell told him as they sat together on the couch, folding laundry together.
It was a cute thing, Maxwell coming down to try to help Andrew with chores. It was clear that Maxwell felt rather incompetent when it came to taking care of the house, and Andrew thought it was adorable that he wanted to help in any capacity.
Andrew also made sure to never belittle his attempts. So what if his clothes weren’t perfectly folded? How else was he going to learn? It was how his Mom had taught him, and in fairness to Maxwell, while would he need to learn? He came from a rich family, and until Andrew had arrived, all of his clothes had gone to a dry cleaners or the personal house cleaners he’d hired took care of it.
The washer and dryer, when Andrew found them, looked practically brand new.
"But...you aren’t upset that I revealed that I’m dating you?" Andrew asked. He’d felt bad about it once he’d had a moment to think about it. He shouldn’t have reacted that way. There were plenty of ways he could have reacted that would have revealed that maybe he knew the Beckett’s, but wouldn’t have dirtied Maxwell’s name potentially.
Maxwell smiled down at the shirt he was attempting to fold.
"Andrew, why would I ever be upset about that? I’m only keeping our relationship under wraps out of respect for your new manifestation and that you aren’t used to being a public figure. You’re practically a private citizen, even if you have ties to several large, famous families. While I was upset with what you did by carrying me at the wedding, I wasn’t upset because it was you doing it, I was upset because I’m just not used to that kind of behaviour." Maxwell finished folding the shirt and placed it to the finished side on the couch, in between them.
"I just...I lost my cool when they were commenting about you, so I worried that you would be upset about that." Andrew replied, embarrassed. He was worried that he was coming off too possessive. Andrew knew Maxwell was an independent person who wouldn’t like someone acting that way. He knew from Maxwell’s behaviour that if any of the previous men he’d dated had reacted that way, they would be kicked to the curb.
So Maxwell’s soft chuckle and warm expression were really making Andrew nervous.
"I am not upset about that either. Again, I’m just worried that you’ll regret doing so because you essentially did it for me. I want you to do things for yourself first, and then maybe me second or third. At least in this regard." Maxwell told him, and Andrew gulped.
"So...I’m allowed to tell others that I’m dating you?" Andrew asked carefully and Maxwell’s ears turned pink.
"Of course you’re allowed to do that!" He spat, flustered and Andrew swallowed.
"You aren’t...you’re okay with that?" Andrew asked again and Maxwell huffed, about to get upset with him when he glanced over at Andrew and paused. Andrew wasn’t sure what his facial expression was, but it clearly caught Maxwell by surprise.
"Andy, Baby, I’m not embarrassed that I’m dating you. I’ll never be embarrassed about that." Andrew dropped his gaze, his own face growing hot. "I want to flaunt and boast that I’m dating you. You’re a good man, and you treat me well. You don’t even care who or what my family is or does. You can bake, you can clean, you make up for a lot of the things that I lack. I am not upset that you care enough about me to want to defend me. I think it’s very cute that you revealed your identity just to shut up a bunch of new true alphas from gossiping about me, but I also don’t want you to feel pressured by that." Maxwell told him. Maxwell’s fingers grabbed Andrew’s chin, tilting his face so that Maxwell could stare into his eyes. He was smiling. "And I would have felt this way if you were still a beta. Honestly, probably more so. Cause then I could have really rubbed it into everyone’s face that I didn’t care about alphas." Andrew felt his heart jerk.
"So is it a bad thing that I’m an alpha? Do you want to hide me away now?" Maxwell slowly closed his eyes before he opened them again.
"Andy, I know that she did quite a number on you for you to think this way, so I’m going to be patient, alright? It was just something I thought, but I honestly don’t care enough to be bothered with what others think about me as long as it doesn’t cost me contracts related to my job, alright? So what if my partner ended up being a true alpha? Does that really matter in the grand scheme of things? I didn’t even think I’d end up with a partner, and yet here I am, with one of the most perfect men I’ve ever laid eyes on." Andrew felt his eyes water at Maxwell’s words.
"R-Really?" Andrew asked and Maxwell chuckled.
"Even if you’re a big cry baby and you deny it." Maxwell teased and Andrew sniffed.
"Well, I wouldn’t cry as much if you weren’t the sweetest thing all the time. Of course I’m going to get emotional when you’re sweeter than candy." Andrew complained, pushing up his glasses so that he could wipe under his eyes. He missed the way Maxwell’s face scrunched up but didn’t miss how pink his ears were.
"You are the only person who considers me sweet." Maxwell muttered. "Either way, Andy, I’m not upset you told your therapy group who you are or that you are dating me. I will just ask, are you prepared that they might try to ask you for favours? Or try to get you to do things for them?" Andrew weighed his question seriously as he went back to folding laundry.
"Well, I have considered it briefly, but then I just shrugged. What could they do? I don’t really hold that much power, and I would never ask something of you that I think would inconvenience you. I think me asking any questions about your work that I’m not supposed to know is a great inconvenience, and I’m also not close enough to either Will or Ben to ask them about the inner workings of their companies. So, I don’t really have anything that they could use to their advantage." He shrugged.
"Did you tell them about who you were? Outside of your name and who you are dating? Did you bring up Kim at all?" Andrew shook his head.
"Why would I do that?" He asked, and Maxwell snorted.
"Well, if some of them saw you at the wedding, then they might make the connection that you two are close. It’ll be fun to see if any of them try to reach out and make a connection. Just be careful. If they’ve grown up in this field as betas in true alpha families, they either are going to be damaged, but good people, or the exact opposite." Maxwell warned, and Andrew listened.
This was his playing field, and it wasn’t as if Andrew also had that thought. Some of the guys and girls in the group were quite damaged. You could tell by the way they spoke about their families and their home lives. It must have been hard for them, and it wasn’t as if Andrew grew up totally normal either.
He had been lucky. He’d been away from his father, while these people...hadn’t. Andrew wouldn’t lie and say he didn’t feel any pity for them, but he’d have his guard up. He didn’t want another Tracey incident on his hands.
"I know. I just hope it isn’t the whole group that wants to use my connections. That would be quite upsetting." Andrew told him, and Maxwell blinked, before he laughed.
"Yes, it would be. What did you want to do for dinner, Andrew? Should we order something in? Give you a break after we’ve come home and then discuss your first day back at work?" Andrew felt excitement fill his body as Maxwell glanced at him, his blue eyes sparkling.
"Oh, can we? I mean, I would love to do whatever you’d like." Andrew attempted to be calm and collected, but Maxwell’s laughing eyes told him that he hadn’t pulled it off that well.
"Were you that anxious to get back to work?" He teased and Andrew felt like a sad puppy. He didn’t want to hurt Maxwell’s feelings, but he also didn’t want to lie.
"I just...my brain feels like it’s going too slow. I tried playing brain games but it’s not enough. I need something else to focus on. Not that I don’t like being a house-husband, but I just..." Maxwell smirked, turning so that his whole body was facing him.
"Got it. So, if we ever decide to have kids seriously, and I do end up getting pregnant, I’m going to have to set up a lab or something at home so that you can do something while the kid is asleep." Andrew’s heart jerked at the mention of kids, so it took him a second to realise what Maxwell had said in full.
"No, you don’t have to do that!" Maxwell smirked some more at Andrew’s protest.
"Oh? Did you expect me to take time off to raise the kid? I’m not going to have any child from my body be raised fully by nannies, Andrew." Andrew was stunned that they were having a conversation like this, and Andrew gulped.
"N-No, I’m not...I just...you’d build me a lab?" Andrew asked carefully and Maxwell chuckled.
"You aren’t assuming it’d be just a lab, are you? We’d have to move. I’d build you a whole house." Maxwell promised, and Andrew felt like he was going to fall in love all over again. The way Maxwell looked at him, spoke to him, made something warm form in his chest.
"God, I adore you." Andrew muttered. He watched as those blue eyes widened and Maxwell’s nostrils flared. Maxwell reached for him, pulling Andrew down by his neck to kiss him nice and slow.
"And I adore you, Andrew." Maxwell said against his lips. "Now, what do you want for dinner, before I decide I’m just going to have you on an empty stomach."
