Chapter 127: Slotting into place
Chapter 127: Slotting into place
Andrew found out that the second party that they were all going to was mostly work relations. It was a party that was completely out of his element, especially since he towered over quite a few of the guests.
That, and he wasn’t a medical doctor, he actually didn’t know what Amir did for work, if he worked at all, nor what his family did. Andrew still didn’t really know what the Becketts main company did for work. Trade? Brokering? Crime syndicate related things since that was Mr. Beckett’s background?
He had no clue.
He was also with Maxwell, which seemed to draw people to them like a magnet. Andrew had no idea why, but at the same time, he understood. Maxwell looked very handsome in his suit, and he’d restyled his hair. He looked more like a fairy than normal and Andrew knew he was getting jealous of all the men around him.
Even some women were getting too bold for his liking, but he was reigning his feelings in. He didn’t have time to glare at everyone. Those who hadn’t gone to Maxwell had instead gone to Andrew.
For some reason, people were trying to form a bond with him, but Andrew didn’t have any business cards or anything of the sort. His pockets were full of them now and it was clear he was growing flustered.
"Andy!" Kim’s shout across the room had Andrew feeling immense relief. His face brightened as he saw the taller woman make her way through the crowd. She had Jenny’s hand in a vice grip and it was nice to see that someone else towered over the others as well.
She was wearing a velvet pantsuit in a stunning green shade. She looked stunning, and her hair was down in waves around her shoulders. She’d matched the outfit with silver baubles and accessories. She’d done her makeup in a way that amplified her eyes. She looked stunning.
Jenny wasn’t anything to laugh at either. She wore a cream shade dress with a heavy floral pattern. The florals would have overwhelmed anyone else, but to Jenny they were quite complimentary. She wore strappy, high heels in the same cream shade as the dress and her accessories were the shade of her eyes. Bright blues and silvers. Overall, the two ladies looked quite pretty and Kim was the first one to pull him in for a hug.
"Look at this! Aren’t you the perfect eye candy! I bet Maxy is overflowing with jealousy." Andrew laughed heartily at her joke and they both glanced at Maxwell. He’d been in a heated discussion, his work face on, until he heard Andrew laugh.
His head snapped in their direction, a glare at the ready. As soon as he realised it was Kim, his expression relaxed and Kim laughed. He finished up his conversation and made his way towards them. Kim enfolded him in a hug as Jenny did the same to Andrew.
"Kim, Jenny. It is great to see you two again." Maxwell said, meaning it. Andrew began to notice that everyone was staring at their little quartette quite intensely but he didn’t have time to pay attention to it. Jenny was demanding his attention.
She was smiling up at him with warmth, her hand firm.
"You look better than the last time I saw you. Show me your new teeth." She demanded and Andrew laughed, shaking his head before opening his mouth. She covered her mouth, hiding her smile. "My my, what big teeth you have."
"All the better to bite Maxy with, huh?" Andrew felt his face heat as Kim poked fun at him. It was obvious that she had noticed the bite mark on Maxwell’s shoulder, but he didn’t think she’d bring it up. He should have known better.
Maxwell gave a professional laugh, even as his ears turned pink.
"Kim! Not in public!" Andrew hissed quietly and Kim slapped his shoulder.
"Please, a wedding is the best place to make these kinds of jokes." Kim’s expression was bright, light. "You two look so handsome together. And the lavender shade looks great on you. I like the small details of gray to bring it all together. Make sure everyone knows that you belong to Maxy." Maxwell’s ears didn’t get brighter, but they didn’t dim. Andrew gave a wide grin.
"Yup! I belong to him!" He declared and Maxwell huffed.
"You’re drawing even more attention, Andrew." Maxwell muttered and Andrew laughed.
"More? I think you’re mistaken. They’ve just been waiting. Do you know how many business cards I have in my pockets?" Andrew said, and Kim chuckled.
"Of course. You’re clearly a true alpha. A bias that everyone is going to have is that you’re well connected." Kim noticed a waiter walking by and motioned for them to come over after she made eye contact. She motioned for everyone to take a glass, Andrew included. When she saw him hesitate, she gave him a grin. "I’ll keep an eye, Andy. Have a few sips. I’ll put Maxy on ya if you get too wild." She told him with a wink.
Maxy nearly sputtered, but it soothed a part of Andrew that someone else who could watch him was around.
He did end up taking a glass, and the four of them cheered.
"To new beginnings!" Kim said and everyone echoed her before taking a sip. She’d gotten them champagne. Andrew assumed it was the good kind since he had no doubt that the Becketts would have done that. Andrew didn’t know the difference. It was a carbonated alcoholic beverage.
It was no scotch, that’s for sure.
Maxwell patted Andrew’s arm, giving it a squeeze.
"I have to go back." He whispered and Andrew nodded, giving him a warm smile.
"This one is very important to you. It’s okay. Just...stay where I can see you." Maxwell nodded at Andrew’s request.
"Easy. Have fun with Kim and Jenny." He told him before smiling at the two women and moving away. Kim chuckled, watching him go to work.
"He’s a busy boy." She said warmly and Andrew nodded, pride in his smile.
"He’s very important too." He told her and she chuckled. Jenny moved closer, standing between the two giants.
"Are things going well, Andy? I heard that going through Maxy’s heat helped you stabilize, but I honestly didn’t expect you to be at the wedding. At least not this part, maybe the ceremony and the last party." Andrew nodded.
"I’m on some medication that we’ve been testing. It’s working well so far, haven’t had any side effects and it helps me manage my pheromones. I don’t fluctuate as much, and Michael said I’m doing much better since helping Max out." Jenny nudged his shoulder, a knowing smile on her lips.
"I’m sure you did help him out." She teased. "I heard all about his suggestions." Kim cleared her throat as Andrew shot her a look.
"I am not keeping that from Jenny." Kim told him, and Andrew sighed.
"I never expected you to." Andrew replied and Jenny giggled.
"It’s sweet. It tells me that he trusts you a lot, Andy. He probably didn’t even realise that he didn’t trust his other partners till now. He probably couldn’t." Andrew nodded in agreement and in sadness.
"Well, he doesn’t have to worry about it anymore. Unlike me, Maxy can’t take suppressants. They don’t react well with his body." Kim nodded.
"It’s a famous story in our world. It’s why everyone is so supportive. I bet you that half of the people in this room have kids or they themselves can’t take suppressants. Or couldn’t before Maxy started his company. He’s done amazing work. Speaking of work, when are you going back to school?" Andrew laughed nervously.
"Uh, soon, maybe? Michael cleared me for work, so I think Max was hoping to have me work some labs at the company first before I started going back to school. Test the waters. I know I can work and go to school at the same time but they don’t believe me. In fairness, that was with my old body. Who knows with this new one?" Andrew joked, but Kim seemed thoughtful.
"I’ll speak to Dr. Smith about it. I have his number, since we both worry about you. I’ve been included in the debriefs." She bragged and Andrew felt his face flush. That was pretty embarrassing. To find out that so many people wanted every doctor’s check up on him?
He felt a warmth spread in his chest and his grip tightened on the champagne flute in his hand.
"I’ll have to have a chat with Michael about doctor patient confidentiality." Andrew muttered darkly and Kim laughed.
"Be kind to the boy. He’s good at his job, and I was scouting him for our kids. Since he’s done such a great job with you, and several others, I wanted to see if he was interested. He only sent me summaries, not full reports. He’s not a fool." Her green eyes sparkled as she looked over Andrew. "He doesn’t know how much to trust me, and I respect that."
"He still should be speaking to me before he gives out that kind of stuff."
"The woman traded me information, so it was the least I could do. Come on, she’s basically your aunt. Be kind to me, alright?" Michael’s voice came from behind him, and Andrew spun. The man was in a tailored dark blue suit with a tan vest over a white dress shirt. He looked clean cut, well taken care of. He also held a champagne flute in his hand, but had a leather briefcase in the other.
"Michael." Andrew greeted, wrapping the man in a hug much to Michael’s amusement.
"Ah, I see. Talk shit behind my back, but all smiles to my face huh? I had no idea you fit in so well in this society, Andy." He teased and Andrew rolled his eyes.
"I don’t want to hear that from you, Michael." Andrew warned, but Michael just smiled. Andrew felt even more relieved. It was good to see him.
