Chapter 106: The wonderings of a new alpha

"Look at you. You’re smitten." Kim’s voice shook Andrew out of his haze, and he shifted. He’d been staring at Maxwell talking to Michael. Maxwell’s profile was slightly flushed, his gaze serious as he stared at Michael. Michael was jotting down everything Maxwell said, and Andrew wondered if he had his little recorder with him again.

Turning from where he was leaning in the doorway, he met the warm, green gaze of the older woman who had snuck up on him. He hadn’t even realised she was right beside him, and that told him all he needed to know. He was smitten. And whatever was happening in his body was affecting his perception.

He normally was more observant.

"I...yes, I am." Andrew told her, a little flustered. He was new to these kinds of feelings, this possessiveness. It hadn’t been like this prior to Maxwell’s heat, and he wasn’t sure what to think of that. "Kim...how do you deal with it?" Andrew asked quietly, worriedly, and Kim stared at Andrew in surprise. She shifted on her feet, leaning against the other side of the wide door frame so that the both of them could watch the living room action.

She looked at the newly made alpha, his eyes reflective in the light. The deep brown shade they normally were was overshadowed by the bright amber hidden within. His jaw was tense, and the muscles in his arms were in sharp contrast. He had one foot tapping impatiently, and the more that Kim looked him over, the more nervous he became.

She smiled softly, her own green eyes gaining an amber reflection.

"Which part are you struggling with, Andy?" She asked carefully and he sighed. His face shifted, and he seemed in pain.

"I’ve never felt this possessive of someone in my whole life. I’m worried about what it will mean for the future." He muttered, and Kim, who had grown up with the feeling, made a soft noise in the back of her throat.

"Ah. Some of that comes with the territory of having spent a heat with an omega. While some of that relates to who you are as a person. Andy, your secondary manifestation, even if forced and late, isn’t meant to change you fundamentally as a person. These...gifts we are given are meant to enhance us, not to punish us. Yes, some of us to suffer due to our secondary sexes, I won’t blow smoke up your ass about that, but fundamentally, they aren’t supposed to be burdens." Andrew’s mouth drew down in a frown, and she laughed.

"I am having a hard time believing you." He muttered, and she shook her head slowly.

"I can understand that. With everything you are going through as a late manifested true alpha, I can only imagine the things you are having to face emotionally and internally. Regular late alpha manifestors only have to deal with about a third of what you’re going through. I get it. I do. It’s a lot to manage. But what I am trying to say, Andy, is that you are never going to be more than what you decide." He flinched and Kim’s gaze softened even as the amber in her gaze reflected back at him.

"How can you be so sure?" He demanded, his tone sharp, but she knew it wasn’t directed at her.

"Because I am nothing like my Mother, Andy, the same way I know you aren’t going to be like your father." He made a face, and she reached out, gripping onto his hand. It was still clenched, still tight, and she didn’t fault him. This was a lot for him to take in. "You are your own person, and I know it’s probably going to take you a while to realise that for yourself, but you are. Your father has nothing on your self control, your resilience, and your perseverance. You are a strong man, in mind and body, and you will never do anything that you are so afraid of. Maxy cares about you deeply, Andrew, and he probably hates that he can’t help alleviate your worries." Andrew’s brow knit together at her words.

"But he does help me." He protested, and she snorted.

"Yeah? What about all that pain smell I smelt in the bathroom? Does he know about that?" Andrew flinched.

"How did you-"

"I have a very sensitive nose, young man. So why doesn’t he know about it? And don’t lie and tell me he does. If he did, he would be fluttering all over you." Andrew hated that she was probably right, but at the same time, he was happy that the people who he cared about had such a good reading on each other.

The fact that she knew that about Maxwell told him that she had been paying attention. She had cared about watching him, and how he interacted with Andrew, and that made Andrew feel emotional.

"I just...didn’t want to worry him. He’s been on cloud nine ever since the heat ended and it didn’t have any adverse effects on me. I didn’t want to bother him with-"

"Andrew, I know you know better. Relationships don’t work when one keeps their feelings inside. I can tell you care deeply for the man, and that he does for you, but you are your Mother’s son in the end. If you don’t communicate with him, things are only going to snowball until there is no point of return." Andrew wondered what that meant, but from a glance, could tell now was not the time to ask about it.

Kim’s eyes were amber, her expression stiff. These weren’t good memories for her, and Andrew was bringing them up. He felt a twinge of pain. He didn’t want to hurt her.

As if able to sense it, she sighed, giving his hand a squeeze.

"Don’t you dare. If you open that mouth to apologise to me, I am going to tell Jenny about the fang marks I saw on Maxwell’s shoulder." Andrew blinked at her several times before the words washed over him and his face heated.

"I-Is that something bad?" Andrew asked, his face warm and Kim’s expression softened.

"It’s...usually a sign of a lack of control. An alpha would normally do it when they want to mark the omega they’re with." Andrew groaned.

"Maxwell asked for it. Right there." Andrew muttered, and Kim let out a bark of laughter.

"He’s not subtle in the least, is he? I feel like that boy has been telling you from the beginning exactly what he wants." She teased, and Andrew groaned.

"Maybe? I don’t know. Maxwell could say the strangest things with a straight face when I first got to know him. Now he shows a bit more emotion, and I think it’s for my benefit. That, or I am able to read him better." Andrew hesitated. "Is that spot really...a sign?" He clarified, and Kim laughed. Her grip tightened once more on Andrew’s hand before she let him go and moved back.

"It really is. I think your little Maxy has a big crush on you. The kind that is spelt l o v e. It makes sense. His whole family is notorious for it." Andrew stared at her in surprise.

"Well, I’ve heard about his parents, but his whole family?" Andrew asked, and she grinned.

"Oh right. The famous closet incident. Did he tell you that his Mom was engaged at the time? And had come to the party with her fiancé? Ex now, obviously, but it was a big deal at the time. Maxwell’s grandparents weren’t any different on either side." She chuckled. "I think it’s hilarious that they try for the arranged marriage thing still. His family is a lost cause. They almost always break up their engagements or fall in love with their arranged partner at first sight." Andrew nodded his head slowly.

He would never say that Ben and Amir weren’t meant for each other. It was clear that they were the love of each other’s life, but he also knew that they were arranged. Maybe it was why Maxwell had been so resistant to it? His Mom, his grandparents and probably several other family members in his life didn’t have an arranged marriage that worked out for them. That, and he was a very independent kind of guy.

"So you know Maxwell’s family?" He asked and she nodded.

"I do. His grandmother was a good friend to my own. Even with all of the...other things that they were involved in." It didn’t surprise him that Kim knew about the family business. Honestly, she probably knew more than Andrew ever would.

"So you know that they separated from the main family." Andrew said, and watched as Kim’s expression fell. She sighed, and looked off towards Maxwell.

"Yeah. I do know about it. Tragic, really. But I can tell you that Maxwell comes from his steel backbone through blood. Once he makes up his mind, like anyone else in the family, they aren’t going to bend." She sighed. "They’d rather snap in half instead." Andrew frowned. He knew that Maxwell had kind of spoken about it like it didn’t matter, but it was clear from Kim’s words it had been a big deal.

"Whose side do you take on it?" He asked, and Kim chuckled.

"It’s obvious, isn’t it? My wife is an omega, and I don’t oppress her in the slightest. I was never going to be on Maxy’s grandfather’s side no matter what. And what he was asking of a Father to do to his own son? I would have killed them if my parents had asked me the same thing." Andrew got the feeling he didn’t know everything, and with how worked up Kim was getting, he doubted that now would be a good time to ask.

It worked out, since Michael made eye contact with Andrew and let him know it was safe to come back. Andrew glanced at Kim.

"Thank you for answering my questions, even if they seemed a little...scattered." He told her and she smiled.

"Andy, that’s what I’m here for. Any question you have, you can ask. I promise I’ll answer to the best of my ability." Andrew could feel what she wasn’t saying. She was trying to make up for time lost. She was making sure that Andrew knew that she had always been here, even if he hadn’t seen it.

Andrew appreciated the thought, even if he wasn’t fully sure he could accept it at the moment. He was happy to welcome her into his life, and share moments about his Mom with her, but family felt too big. He hadn’t had it in such a long time, he wasn’t even sure what it was anymore.
