Chapter 104: Tempering the beast within

Chapter 104: Tempering the beast within

They didn’t have long to make out at the dining table since the person waiting outside had not forgotten why they had arrived. Andrew growled again, separating from this with a glower, and Maxwell fanned himself.

"That’s so fucking hot." He whispered, and Andrew felt his cheeks heat.

"Stop saying that. I hate it. I can’t even control it." Maxwell’s expression softened, before it grew dirty.

"That’s even hotter. You can’t control how much you want me? And want to hide me away from others? Stop. I’m still getting over my heat, and like you said, we’re out of condoms." Maxwell’s gaze widened. "Wait, is this the reason you haven’t been getting more delivered to the house? Because Dr. Smith is an alpha?" Andrew’s lips firmed, and Maxwell burst into laughter. "Oh, you are too fucking much. Go answer the door before I attack you, and damn the condoms, you’ll just have to pull out." His head growing hazy from the thought of being inside of Maxwell, Andrew got to his feet.

He made sure to pull his glasses down, adjusting them slightly as he made his way towards the door. He still didn’t want to open the door. He didn’t care who was behind it, but his whole body was on edge. He felt like growling, and he hated that. God, it was awful, but it was made better by Maxwell staying where he was, and accepting him.

Maxwell didn’t hate that he made this noise, and he wasn’t angry about it either. He was shocked, but not upset. That alone gave Andrew the strength to move towards the door. He didn’t look through the peephole. Whoever it was, was allowed passed by the security, so they were fine.

Unlocking the door, Andrew hesitated for a second longer, before finally opening it. And coming face to face with...

Michael and Kim?

Blinking, he stared at the two of them, both of them bundled up like they were ready to wait there for quite a while, and Andrew felt his cheeks warm.

Oh. They knew. They knew that Andrew was going to be like this. God, he felt like such a fool, and from the way his face warmed, he knew he had to be flushing in embarrassment.

Kim laughed, but didn’t step into the house. Andrew’s heart squeezed.

"Well, I’m glad to see that you look okay, but you definitely grew taller young man." She teased, her green eyes light. Michael was frowning at him, and Andrew couldn’t meet his gaze.

"You didn’t mention anything about growing taller Andy. Fuck, you’re huge. What did you grow? Like, 10 inches. Holy hell. It’s important for me to know these things." Michael scolded, and Andrew gripped onto the door tightly. Yeah, he was an idiot from keeping it from him.

"I...sorry." He mumbled, and Michael sighed, shaking his head.

"Don’t apologise if you don’t mean it. I’m not angry, just worried about you. Do you have enough clothes right now?" Michael asked, and Andrew realised that neither of them were stepping into the house, or even asking. It relaxed that newer, scarier part of him, and Andrew hated that there was a part of him like that. Kim must have known, and Andrew almost hated that too. But at the same time...it was nice to have someone know that about him, and respect him enough to come check on him, but without overstepping.

Fighting with himself, Andrew finally came to a conclusion and stepped back, making space for them to enter.

"You two...can come in." Andrew muttered quietly, fighting himself. Kim’s eyes went wide, before her expression relaxed into a warm, happy smile.

"You’re doing your best, huh? If it was me, I wouldn’t have done that." Kim said, and Michael, who wasn’t a true alpha, but had a lot of knowledge of them, listened closely. Andrew scratched the back of his head.

"Uh, well, you’re mated, and Michael..." Kim snorted, as both of them looked at Michael. Michael raised his hands in a placating gesture, and that was when Andrew realised he had two bags with him. Probably full of things that Andrew and Maxwell would need, as well as his usual Doctor things he carried with him.

"Ah. Michael’s not a threat. Understood. Did our little Maxy say something to soothe you?" Andrew’s cheeks burned at her teasing, and everyone heard Maxwell’s bark of laughter from the dining room. Kim’s grin widened. "And you’re hiding him away from us? You really are riding your true alpha tendencies. Makes sense though. This was your first heat together, right? I’m impressed Andy. You’re doing a great job controlling yourself. I practically stood guard outside of Jenny’s home for two weeks after I helped her with her first heat. It was...I’m glad Jenny looks back on it fondly, let’s just say that." She responded, giving Andrew a thumbs up before glancing around the space. She checked everything, before tentatively taking a step into the home.

Andrew felt a small, quiet growl crawl up his throat, but he stopped himself. Kim, hearing it, paused, but Andrew waved it away. She stepped fully into the home, and Michael did the same. Everyone stood there, the door still open as if they were afraid something bad was going to happen.

"Close the door! You’re letting the cold air in!" Maxwell called from the dining room, and it broke the spell. Kim closed the door behind her, and the two shuffled around, taking off their shoes. "Andrew, come help me to the living room. I’ll sit on the couch, but I do not want to be excluded." Maxwell’s demanding tone eased some of the tension in Andrew’s body. It was a good thing Maxwell was so bossy, otherwise he was worried this feeling inside of him would have railroaded both of them.

Kim’s smile was soft, tender as she stared at Andrew. She waved him off, motioning for him to go to his partner.

"Go. We’ll remain here. I understand that you must be riding your instincts. It’s why I’m here as well. I’ll make sure we don’t trigger you more." Andrew appreciated it, and nodding, he went to the dining room to help Maxwell.

Maxwell hadn’t just sat patiently. He’d finished his breakfast, including his juice, and sat waiting for Andrew to arrive. He’d already turned in his seat, ready. Andrew was ready to help him, assist him to walk to the living room, but instead Maxwell held open his arms.

"Carry me. That’ll make you feel better, won’t it?" Andrew softened further. This man...Andrew didn’t even know what he needed, but Maxwell was there, predicting it as if it was nothing. Andrew got on his knees before Maxwell, and buried his head in his shoulder. Inhaling his scent, his body shook.

"You are too good for me." He whispered, wrapping his arms around the man. Maxwell chuckled, running his fingers through his hair gently.

"My big baby Andy. You are too good for me. Now, carry me to the living room before I lose my patience." Maxwell ordered, and Andrew laughed. He just had such a hard time sitting in tender moments, and Andrew loved that about him.

Pulling back, Andrew sniffed, before wrapping his arms under Maxwell, carrying him so that he had a clear view of the area like Andrew. Most would call this a princess hold, but Andrew wouldn’t dare. Maxwell was no princess. He was a King.

Kim and Michael hadn’t moved an inch since stepping into the house, and Maxwell gave them a small wave as he came into view. Both of them stared with wide eyes at the condition of Maxwell.

He was in good health, no one could deny that, but he was covered in marks. Even the shirt he wore could not hide it.

"Uh, does he need-"

"I do not." Maxwell stated tartly. "I wanted them." He confirmed, and Kim burst into laughter.

"Alright. My nephew-in-law likes my Andy a little on the wild side. Good to know." Kim’s teasing tone helped everyone as Andrew gently placed Maxwell on the furthest point away from the others on the couch. Maxwell didn’t complain, and was actually very supportive of Andrew’s decision. He patted Andrew’s shoulder, giving him a kiss on the cheek that had Andrew’s already tensing shoulders relaxing.

It was like Maxwell could see right through him, and Andrew didn’t know what to do with that information. It also wasn’t lost on Andrew that Maxwell knew Andrew had grown in height. Hell, he was an idiot for thinking that he wouldn’t notice, but he hadn’t brought it up too many times since. He was letting Andrew...adapt. Even if it was clear that Maxwell wasn’t good at that kind of thing.

Fuck. Andrew couldn’t even leave the house by himself yet, let alone go to a shop that was worthy enough for Maxwell Beckett’s engagement ring. And getting engaged so soon would look bad on him, wouldn’t it? Ugh, but what else was he supposed to do?

He was head over heels for this man. He wanted everyone to know it.

Andrew was the one who approached the other alphas first. After making sure that Maxwell was safe, he gave a nod and the two of them slowly made their way into the house proper. Kim walked like normal. While Michael walked like he was walking into a large predator’s enclosure. Arms out, ready to pacify at any second.

If he had come alone, Andrew might have behaved the way he was treating him. But with Kim at his side, shaking her head, it soothed him. Made him feel seen.

"We brought a few things, just in case. I heard from your assistant, Maxy, that your heats have a long lingering time, but the worst of it is usually only a few days. I’m glad to see that they were right. Jenny made some sandwiches and snacks, and wanted me to bring them over. I left them in the car, just in case you weren’t up to visitors. I’ll grab them after we leave." Andrew nodded, his smile soft.

"That’s very kind of her." He said, and Kim scoffed.

"She’s trying to lure you in. Prove that she’s a good cook, and you two might come over more often for dinner. That’s her hope, anyway. My hope is that you’ll invite us over more. I want to see how you’ve grown as a cook since I last tasted your food." Kim said.

"He’s an amazing cook." Maxwell bragged, and Andrew felt his face warm again. Kim’s gaze was warm at Maxwell’s smug tone. "I imagine that we’ll be hosting quite a few Christmas or holiday dinners once everyone finally understands how good he is." Kim laughed, and Michael nodded along in agreement.

"I’m surprised that they were fighting over hosting you two, but I take it that they’ve only sampled a few of Andrew’s creations." Michael added, and Maxwell gave a slightly confused look.

"Fighting? Who?" Kim glanced at Andrew, and Andrew worried he hadn’t told Maxwell about that.

"Oh. Jenny and your Father were fighting over who was going to host us for Christmas and Christmas eve. I...did I not tell you?" Horror crossed his expression, filling his body but Maxwell just blinked several times, before he chuckled.

"Oh, those silly people. So? Who has Christmas eve?" He asked, not making a big deal out of it. Andrew worried that he was going to feel the brunt of that later.

"We won. You’ll spend Christmas day with your family, but we get you first." Kim puffed out her chest proudly, and Maxwell chuckled.

"Well, I can’t say I’m not happy about that. My parents always throw boring parties for Christmas and New Years. It’ll be nice to have a family meal for once." Maxwell said, and Andrew froze, along with Kim. The two of them locked eyes, and nodded. They were going to make it the best dinner possible.
