Chapter 221: CCXXI. Fantastical Unfolding
Lostra Royal Hunting Ground.
It wasn’t devoid of activity.
By all rights, the Dragon should have been transported here by now, yet there was no movement at all.
After making inquiries with the Count of Londen City,
it became apparent that the handover location was Heaven Port, and it was a Pirate Gang called Black Sail that was in charge of the transfer.
There must have been a problem somewhere.
However, given the sensitive nature of the matter, it was impossible to use official personnel without risking an international dispute and giving the Emperor a reason to explode with rage—better to seek out "gloves" to handle it.
With their financial resources, they could certainly muster the most luxurious of teams; there was nothing they couldn’t ask for, nothing they couldn’t hire.
First, they planned to hire a Hall-level adventurer to go take a look at the situation, to find out whether the Dragon Lady was still in Heaven Port, whether someone had detained her, or whether there had been an accident during the handover. This task had to succeed; failure was not an option.
The Count of Londen City had never imagined that Black Sail would be bold enough to do such a thing—handing the Dragon Lady over to them was like leading a lamb into a den of tigers.
But there was no other way.
If not for them, the Dragon Lady might have already been captured and taken back to Aran without any chance for recourse.
But the Count of Londen City was too preoccupied with other matters to pay much attention to this. In the Beima Duchy, the situation was explosive at just a spark; his friend, a descendant of the former royal family, had already sent him an invitation to join him next year in an uprising, to make a stark statement to the feebleminded puppet King.
Meanwhile, at this very moment,
Midnight at Heaven Port.
The core members of Black Sail had long braced themselves for the ruthlessness to come. The Stele, gemstones, Dragons, and numerous Golden Dragons were not prizes easily claimed.
Fast money had its pitfalls.
It often meant dying abruptly in the streets, bodies left to rot in the wilderness.
Midnight passed, and it was the 28th—the day after tomorrow would be the last day of the year.
Goria’s eyes were lifeless, yawning non-stop; she never expected to be called for such a task.
It seemed that Liszt still had some conscience left, declining Tani’s advances and not going further with kisses, maintaining a certain wariness of Dreya.
But he hadn’t cut ties completely, and it seemed there was still a thread of connection between them.
Tani was calm on her way back. After her trip to Aran, her mental state had matured; she was not going to fall apart.
Liszt did not trust Tani to go home alone, and Tani refused to have him follow her, so Liszt had to ask Goria to escort her back, to keep an eye on her and make sure she didn’t do anything foolish.
This was because Tani, distressed by her father’s attempts to kill Liszt, had previously resorted to wrist cutting and attempted suicide by the sea, which had worn Taylor’s patience thin.
Meredith also expressed a desire to have a private talk with Liszt; Goria didn’t think Little Mei could harbor any good feelings towards that scumbag—probably it was about serious matters.
A sudden malicious thought crossed Goria’s mind; what if she set Tani up with Liszt? Then Dreya would keep her distance from him, wouldn’t she?
But she immediately thought better of it; it would be too cruel, and unfair to Tani.
She had been deceived by that scumbag Liszt!
"Don’t get carried away with your thoughts. Liszt is a scumbag. He was all over me just a while ago. What good can come from someone like him? Everything that comes out of his mouth is a lie. Don’t believe a word he says, it’s best to cut ties completely."
Goria tried to console Tani; with so many women in the world, why hang oneself on a single tree? Oh, that’s not right, Liszt is a man, and Tani is straight.
"Uncle Huzi is the best! He’s already bought me a ship, he tells the truth!"
Fafna chimed in, refuting Goria.
Liszt had to kidnap the Dragon Lady, and already made contact with local shipbuilders at Heaven Port. There was no hope of securing something like the SS Fuma Keqing Revenge.
Fafna wasn’t the type to run around with a couple hundred Desperados; she was just a kid’s toy, nothing more than a brand-new, small sailing ship about ten meters long.
It wasn’t meant for long voyages, but at the very least she could make it to the neighboring island without any trouble.
He had already paid a down payment of thirty-one Golden Dragons.
"Who is this monster power girl? I’ve heard some strange rumors."
Before Tani arrived, she was aware of some gossip but chalked it up as rumor, and besides, even if there was an illegitimate daughter, she couldn’t possibly have grown up to this size so quickly.
"Rumors are obviously false; it’s just a kid from a relative’s family."
Goria hadn’t quite figured out what to say, so she resorted to a catch-all phrase.
"Well, that’s a relief."
"What are you relieved about? Liszt is married, don’t go harboring any fantasies. Besides, the guy isn’t exactly a looker, dresses like a slob, and has no redeeming qualities. He’s an absolute scumbag."
"That’s because he grew a beard; you haven’t seen him before."
"What a facial-hair fanatic..."
Goria complained, but then immediately thought of herself, wondering why such a beautiful woman had to be Dreya; if only it had been someone else.
Meanwhile.
Having Goria take Tani home was Meredith’s idea because she had something to say to Liszt.
In the biting cold wind,
Meredith’s mind had never been so tumultuous.
Upon discovering that Goria was with another woman, she had a terrifying thought: she couldn’t escape anyway because she knew about the stele.
Having to endure such torment here and being Liszt’s enforcer, she might as well be dead. She could seek out Liszt to kill her; after all, she was a defeated underling.
She should have diced herself up back in Duguli. Being a bounty hunter meant that you couldn’t blame anyone if you got killed.
But then she also found out from Goria,
Meredith now could go anywhere she wanted, and Liszt wouldn’t dare to kill her.
The Black Sail Captain is cunning and malevolent. The reason he hadn’t killed her or Caroso was that he wanted to exploit Fafna through and through.
It was as if Goria had set her free again. If Liszt laid a hand on her, she would not let him off the hook.
It’s all so complicated.
That vampire woman had magic power too; upon seeing her, one would feel weak all over, and being drained of blood brought an indescribable pleasure.
She knew she’d fallen; she couldn’t accept such a chaotic relationship and didn’t know what to do.
"Have you slept with Goria?"
Meredith calmly asked, watching Liszt light up a cigarette. She asked for one too and started smoking.
Now Liszt’s mind also became complicated.
It’s like forming the Avengers, victims sticking together.
"How could that be?"
Liszt shook his head.
"Listen, sister, let’s not talk about Sharon’s matter. You can set your terms, and I will do my best to satisfy you."
Liszt was still shaken by the daytime events, carefully considering his current predicament; it was a three-pronged situation, depending on how it was handled.
What he hadn’t expected in his life was to be cornered by a woman.
Meredith propped her hand against the wall, blocking Liszt’s way.
Liszt swallowed hard. This woman was a bit crazy during the day; since Dreya took her woman, she might try to take Dreya’s in return, right? No way, no way?
What a fantastical turn of events!
"What in the world are you trying to pull off?"
Although Meredith was quite tall, over 1.8 meters, she was still shorter than Liszt, so it wasn’t quite the same feeling.
"To be honest, I don’t know what to do anymore. Maybe I should give up... liking women."
Meredith had made a weighty decision.
Liszt: "Huh?"
Do you really like that saying, huh?
