Chapter 76: Chapter 19: Evangelon Silvermane [5]
He took a deep breath and opened his eyes, preparing himself for what was about to come.
Well, this was going to hurt.
But just as he chanted the last parts of the incantation, something flew past him that appeared to be struggling helplessly.
As that ’something’ passed him, their eyes met for a fleeting second, and that was when Evan realized he might not be so lucky after all.
"A—Ardyn?!" he called out in alarm, the incantation momentarily forgotten. What in the world was going on? Hadn’t he already made sure that the man was evacuated hours earlier? This was not a part of the plan! "What in the power of the gods is—"
He made a move as though to rush after Ardyn, but then something made him pause in his tracks.
"Evan!" Mathias’s voice suddenly yelled.
Evan immediately snapped to attention, eyes wide in surprise.
"Don’t pay attention to us over here. Just focus on that demon!" Mathias bellowed, enlarging his hand and tightening it into a fist. "We’ll save him. Don’t worry!"
"So don’t stop now!" Blade said as he rushed towards the tendril that still had Ardyn in its grasp.
Evan swallowed, then forced himself to turn back to the Calamity. His heart was pounding so loudly in his ears that it was hard to concentrate. It was the kind of feeling you get when your carefully crafted plans suddenly go awry halfway through.
Just what in the world was going on? Why was Ardyn here, and how did he get caught by the Calamity? Why was he even in the city in the first place? Did something happen?
Also, what about his instructions?
Evan didn’t know what to do. He felt sick with worry and felt that he was the one to blame for Ardyn getting involved in all of this, even though his brain knew it was irrational thinking.
But still, did that really matter right now?
In this kind of situation that they were in?
"...Okay. I understand," he finally said after calming down.
They’re right. By the gods, what have I been doing?
They’re my Guardians. I trust them. They are more capable of protecting him than I can right now.
So I can’t betray their trust in return.
Evan narrowed his eyes and quickly chanted the last part of the incantation.
"...Unleash your divine light, and go forth to eradicate the darkness."
As the words left his lips, holy chains, almost spectral in appearance, erupted from his chest, spiraling outward and stretching toward the Calamity. This act of magic nearly caused him to lose his senses from the excruciating pain, but he endured it.
The pain comes later.
The chains effectively bound the Calamity, including the tendrils that had gripped the Deiridh in a vice-like grip. Finally, the Final Spirit tore the tendrils apart and drove its lance even deeper into the monster’s torso, causing more black ichor to gush from the wound.
It’s working, Evan thought as he breathed heavily.
Just a little more, Evan.
After the chains comes the prison. Just concentrate.
He closed his eyes once more and concentrated, reciting the incantation he had memorized for years, the words flowing from his lips like water.
If they could somehow seal the Calamity here without further incident, then this would be one of those rare times when the threat of the demonic entity was thwarted with very few casualties.
Evan was determined to see this through to the end. No more delays.

Meanwhile, the other side of the battlefield was also engulfed in chaos.
The holy chains that Evan had summoned now wrapped around the hulking form of Calamity, tightening their grip. But the demonic creature continued to thrash relentlessly. Most of its appendages remained pinned and immobilized by the chains, and thanks to the Final Spirit, the monster appeared to be slowly drained of energy.
However, a few massive tendrils were still alive and kicking.
Like the tendril that was still wrapped around Ardyn.
"I called it," Blade said flatly as he burned down an approaching tendril.
"Is this really the time for that, Blade?" Mathias said in exasperation.
At that moment, the Calamity let out a guttural growl, its spasms sending massive waves crashing onto the land as it tried to break free.
"Are those chains really going to hold?" Voss asked, panting as he hacked off another tendril.
Elyana gazed at the Calamity with worry in her eyes.
It was just as Voss said. They all believed in Evan. Of course they did.
But the Calamity was fighting against the restraints so much, to the extent that the chains looked like they were about to break.
She gazed up at her lover and prayed, deep inside her heart, that things were going to be okay.
She then turned back to Ardyn and conjured a crystal sword in her hand, gripping the handle tightly.
"How do we do this?" she asked Mathias, who was right beside her.
The tendril that held Ardyn was dangerously close to the Calamity, as if it wanted to swallow him whole. They couldn’t get too close because the tendrils were still flailing nearby, and there was no telling what might happen to them if they took the risk.
"I’ll burn it down," Blade said as he extended his hands, preparing to blast a pillar of flames.
"Just make sure not to hit Ardyn," Elyana said worriedly.
Suddenly, the monster let out another growl, radiating a malevolent aura that froze everyone in place with paralyzing fear. It was as if the air itself had thickened and an unrelenting pressure pressed down on them.
The next moment, a dark smoke began to billow from its form, slowly shrouding the battlefield in shadow like a thick, dense fog.
"Everyone!" Evan’s voice suddenly called out. "Don’t breathe it in! Just hold on and wait for me! I’ll do something about it!"
What?! Ardyn stopped flailing around immediately after hearing Evan’s words, quickly closing his eyes and holding his breath. Even though he was almost going crazy with panic, his survival instincts kicked in, and he knew he had to follow those words to keep himself alive.
"Again, don’t smell it! It’ll kill you!" Evan repeated.
