Chapter 75: Chapter 19: Evangelon Silvermane [4]
Becoming a full-fledged Summoner meant accepting the fact that you had to bond with seven individuals. Seven strangers with whom you had a connection with. Seven strangers that you had to bond with in order to connect with their Spirit.
When Evan turned eighteen, he finally completed the Final Ritual. When he returned to the White Castle, his parents threw a big banquet to celebrate his official achievement. After all, it was a great honor to have a Summoner in the family who could complete the ritual without giving up halfway through.
It was then that he began his journey to find his Guardians, one by one.
Voss was easy to find compared to the others. He was the apprentice of a self-defense instructor at an academy on the outskirts of Elfroien. He lived in a rather small village, similar to Mathias. He was a year older than Evan and was very proficient with weapons.
They didn’t have a problem getting along with him.
They went straight there after getting hints from Evan’s dreams. After that, it was Blade in the Ormstonian Empire, whom Evan noticed after the man had nonchalantly saved a child from a burning building.
Blade was nonchalant most of the time, but he was a reasonable guy to talk to.
Ansel was a thief who had nearly robbed his own Summoner. He wasn’t a bad guy, just that he grew too used to doing stuff like that in his city.
Gideon, on the other hand, was the son of a renowned scientist in the Sapphire Kingdom. He was a guy who cared more about plants than people. It had been quite a feat to convince Gideon to come with them, as he was stubborn about continuing his analytical research with his magic.
The last one was Clay, the son of a mediocre blacksmith. Clay had intimidated them all at first, but over time they realized that he was only scary on the outside. On the inside, he was a man with a warm heart, something that they realized was true when they saw him save the villagers from a sudden beastspawn attack, not even hesitating to risk his life.
As Evan thought about his Guardians, he felt an eerie sense of calm, a welcome reprieve from all the pain. Each of them was his dearest friend, an ally who had his back whenever he needed it. He thought of his parents, his people, and especially of Elyana, his first and last love.
For the briefest of moments, he thought of her a little more, and he wondered if he might be allowed to open an eye, just to see her again, even for a moment.
With a ragged breath, he concentrated on the merging process once more, barely noticing that he was being led here and there. He didn’t even sense how Ansel made them both invisible. Right now, Evan was in a world of his own, trying his best to do his duty.
So when the Spirits finally merged, it was as if a sense of calm washed over him again. It was only for a moment, but it gave him the peace he desperately needed.
Because after this, it was going to be difficult for him to keep holding on.
When Evan opened his eyes, the once serene, beautiful city was now reduced to a battleground, with the towering presence of the Calamity hovering ominously over them.
He could hear the echoes of battle in the surrounding area like a distant ringing in his ears. He barely registered the words of his Guardians, concentrating only on their current state.
Mathias looked battered. But that was to be expected, since his fighting style with his magic consisted mainly of physical attacks. He could see his friend’s bleeding shoulder, and his heart ached in response.
Blade looked calm as always, but there were lines of exhaustion on his face now. It seemed that the battle had dragged on far too long.
Gideon looked exhausted, as if all life had been sucked out of him. Which was technically true, since his earth magic required a lot of concentration and energy to use.
Ansel wasn’t much better either. He no longer had his usual goofy smile on his face. Clay, on the other hand, was helping him out by supporting his shoulder.
Clay looked banged up too, but just like Mathias, that was to be expected. Evan had seen too many fights and even spars that resulted in worse injuries.
He was just glad they were alive.
Voss, on the other hand, looked comparatively much better than the rest. He was still ready for battle, weapons in hand. He had always been like that. Efficient and strategic, while keeping his cool even in the most intense battles. It was one of the reasons why Evan admired him a lot.
And lastly, Elyana...
She looked battered as well, but very much determined to continue fighting.
Evan felt his heart twist even more at the sight of her injuries. He wanted to reach out and hold her in his arms, but that was, of course, out of the question. After all, they were still in the middle of battle.
So Evan told them to stop fighting, before chanting the Deiridh’s name.
* * *
Everything was going smoothly. The Calamity thrashed about and tried to counterattack, but the Deiridh effectively pinned it to the ground with its holy lance from the heavens. However, the demonic entity continued to fight back, its tendrils still slithering back and forth through the city.
It seems to have grown even stronger, if that’s possible, Evan thought as he focused all his energy on his chest. He had to do this quickly, otherwise the Calamity might escape and all of this would be for nothing.
He placed his hands in a praying position and closed his eyes, concentrating on chanting the correct incantation. This part was crucial because it was needed to create a heavenly prison around the monster, something that would stop it from moving completely.
Throughout the years, history books and renowned researchers often warned the Summoners and Guardians that they needed to improve their technology, skills, and battle tactics in order to continue to seal this monster away.
After each cycle, the Calamity grew stronger, putting more pressure on the future generation of Summoners and Guardians. If their sealing tactics were to fail and the Calamity were to devour every single soul in Celisthea, their very existence would be wiped out.
I can’t let that happen to my people, Evan thought.
Especially not after what my Guardians just went through to buy me time.
