Chapter 73: Chapter 19: Evangelon Silvermane [2]
Evan’s eyes widened. It was the same boy that he had noticed earlier during the distribution process. The one who seemed to be his age but had this distinct look of loneliness in his eyes.
He watched, mesmerized, as the boy flexed his fingers a bit before expanding his entire hand. The transition was mesmerizing for Evan to watch, especially when the child’s hand was bathed in that warm orange glow he was all too familiar with.
Soon enough, Evan couldn’t stand it any longer. He was too excited to continue to stay subtle.
"It’s you!" he exclaimed, causing the boy to jump up in surprise.
With wide eyes, the boy turned to him in alarm, his hand immediately returning to normal.
"P—Prince?!" the boy exclaimed in shock. "I mean... Your Highness, what are you doing in a place like this? You should be at the feast right now..."
"Me? What are you doing over here?" Evan asked conversationally as he plopped down beside the boy.
The boy was caught off-guard. "Me? I was..." His voice trailed off and he suddenly didn’t know what to say.
More importantly, he didn’t know what excuse to give.
The royal family of Angelbay City came to their humble village and gave them food, water, supplies, and other resources without asking for anything in return. Heck, the Queen herself
paid them a personal visit. That in itself was a great honor. So for him to deliberately skip out on the feast that the royal family had painstakingly prepared...
The boy was starting to spiral from all the overthinking when Evan’s soft voice interrupted his thoughts.
"Hey, what’s your name?"
"It’s... Mathias," the boy said hesitantly.
"Mathias? Then I’ll call you Matty!" Evan decided cheerfully. "Is that okay with you?"
Mathias reddened at the nickname, seeming embarrassed. "Your Highness, I’m just a mere—"
"Guardian!" Evan interrupted brightly. "My Guardian, to be exact!"
Mathias’s jaw dropped open. "P—Pardon?!"
"You’re my Guardian! I knew there was something I needed to know about you. So this is the answer." Evan laughed. "I’m so happy! I found my second Guardian!"
"Wait. Wait, wait." Mathias looked a bit panicked. "How can you know that I’m your Guardian, Your Highness?"
"Isn’t it obvious? It’s because you have that symbol on your upper arm. The ’Summoner’s Mark’."
Mathias’ jaw dropped open. "A—And we have... the same aura?!"
Evan nodded. "A Summoner can sense when a Guardian has the same aura, right? Because it’s the indicator of the hidden bond. I learned that at the Academy, and I also felt it when I met my first Guardian!"
Mathias didn’t know what to say, but he instinctively wanted to deny it. "But you’ve only seen my Mark, so you might be mistak—" he tried.
"Oh! By the way, you wanna see mine?" Evan grinned before opening his palm to show him.
In a matter of seconds, wisps of light emerged from his small fingers and coalesced into a single, small ball of light. The tiny sphere glowed softly in the darkness.
Evan watched the look on Mathias’ face as the latter noticed the glowing orange color coming from Evan’s forehead.
Unlike Guardians, Summoners could prevent their Marks from glowing if they wished. However, this ability was reserved for fully-fledged Summoners, so whenever Evan used his magic, his Mark would glow whether he wanted it to or not.
"You’re..." Mathias swallowed visibly. "You really are.... my Summoner."
Evan nodded. "You see? I told you!"
"I—I see." Mathias seemed hesitant. "So, um... what now, Your Highness?"
"What do you mean?"
"Now that both of us have recognized each other as Summoner and Guardian..."
"Well, of course you’re coming with me!" Evan said casually, as though he were simply talking about the weather.
"With you?!" Mathias exclaimed, eyes wide in shock. "Why? What? Where?"
"To the White Castle, of course!" Evan grinned. "You’re my Guardian. You need to protect me at all times, right?"
* * *
It hadn’t taken long for Mathias to bask in the warm sunshine that was Evangelon Silvermane.
It had been easy to convince Mathias to come with him to the White Castle. After explaining everything to his mother, Queen Aldeva allowed it, but with a little hesitation.
It seemed that she hadn’t expected her son to find his second Guardian so quickly, but it was still a welcome revelation. After all, it was easier for Summoners if they found their Guardians early. That way, they wouldn’t have to waste time going on a long journey to find each one.
She had planned to conduct a formal search of Evan’s Guardians once he completed the final ritual, but it seemed that her son had luck on his side.
Meanwhile, Evan didn’t have to work too hard to persuade Mathias to come with him to Angelbay City. It turned out that Mathias had lost his parents in the Calamity attack nearly nine years ago. He had been taken in by the kind village doctor because she was a good friend of his family, but she soon succumbed to old age and passed away, leaving Mathias all alone.
He was eventually sent to the town orphanage, where he made little to no friends.
It wasn’t that he was mean or arrogant. Rather, he found it difficult to form new bonds with others, especially when they lived in a world where a life could easily be taken after a certain period of time. Mathias had lost too many to the demon monster, and he didn’t want to lose any more.
But Evan...
He was Mathias’ Summoner.
That meant that he would always be with him, right?
Mathias bit his bottom lip anxiously. He didn’t know what to think. He even hesitated to say his true thoughts aloud. This was the Prince, after all, even if they had a Summoner-Guardian bond.
But then, as if Evan had read his exact thoughts, he spoke at that very moment.
"You don’t need to worry about anything now," he promised in a gentle voice. "From now on, you’ll have a home forever, and that’s with me."
