Chapter 72: Chapter 19: Evangelon Silvermane [1]
Ever since the sealing process began, Evan had been struggling.
Years of training and practicing his skills could not have fully prepared him for this moment. The priests had warned him about the effects of the sealing ritual, and he had expected the same.
But they were wrong. In fact, the effects were much worse than he had been told. It was just excruciating pain all over and nothing else.
Was this the result of the fusion of all the Spirits in his body?
There was a reason why each Guardian only harbored one Spirit inside of them. That Spirit was like the embodiment of their magic, a part of their essence. Sucking out that essence meant taking away a fraction of their power.
It did not mean that they would become powerless once the Spirit was extracted from them by their Summoner, but the merging process was a necessary step in order to summon the Final Spirit, the Deiridh.
Evan had bonded with all seven of his Guardians, and he would summon a Spirit whenever he felt that they were in a pinch. But he had never felt like this before even after summoning several of them over the years.
For one, it had never felt so painful. It had never felt like his skin was being burned away by invisible flames.
But even though he was in silent agony, he could not stop now. This was the moment he had been waiting for. A moment he had spent his entire life preparing for. If he didn’t do this now, then what would be the point of all his training?
Perhaps the reason he had taken so long to summon the Final Spirit was because he hadn’t anticipated the effects it would have on his body. To be honest, when the Calamity first appeared and began to attack, Evan had felt it.
But there was nothing he could do to help his Guardians. He could only continue to focus on the ritual, letting each Spirit merge with the others one by one. Each fusion brought him some inexplicable kind of mental and physical pain, but he plowed on, determined to see this through to the end.
It was no wonder that so many Summoners failed their sealing rituals whenever the big moment came. The pressure and strain proved to be too much.
As a result, over the years, the priests and priestesses implemented harsher training for the young Summoners so that they would be able to withstand it when the time came.
One of the most notable Summoners in history, High Summoner Xanthe, was known for her calm elegance at all times. Even when she was injured in battle, and even when she was faced with a particularly difficult situation, she would display a serene countenance and proceed to solve the problems with grace.
It was also noted that she seemed to have a high tolerance for pain. It was said that hardly anyone ever saw her break down or see her expression crumble in despair. This was one of the reasons why she was greatly admired by many.
Based on this aspect, Evan felt a bit inferior to her. Unlike her, he felt that he was too soft on the inside, too open to the emotions that would come his way.
When he was young, he had lived a sheltered life, just like Leon. His parents wanted him to stay put and behave, but he couldn’t do that. Even as a child, he wanted to see more of the world. He wanted to explore. He wanted to experience a lot of things, and he couldn’t do that if he was always locked inside the castle walls.
The King and Queen frowned upon this, but Evan would walk past the front yard of the castle and right through the gates to visit the town. Since the city was large enough to satisfy his curiosity, he was content until he was old enough to enter Summoner training.
It was then that Evan met Mathias.
At that time, Evan was thirteen years old. Following the recent devastation brought on by the Calamity, the people of Elfroien were facing a great tragedy of their own. Wanting to help, the Queen and her son, the Prince, traveled to each of the villages to meet with as many people as they could.
His first encounter with Mathias had been unremarkable, to say the least. It was just a brief exchange as Evan distributed food and water to each of the villagers.
But even then, Evan had been very observant. There were a lot of kids his age, but Mathias seemed to stand out somehow. There was an emptiness in the boy’s face, a contrast to the expressions of fear, gratitude, and helplessness of the other children.
Instead, Mathias seemed more like a void.
But there was no mistaking the loneliness in his eyes.
Evan couldn’t explain it at the time, but he felt this connection to the boy, one that was so subtle yet noticeable enough for him to acknowledge that there seemed to be something more to it.
To feel such a bond with a stranger he had never interacted with before was, to be honest, quite unusual.
That night, the village had a quiet feast, courtesy of the Queen’s kindness. There was food everywhere, and for a brief moment, everyone was able to forget about the disaster that had recently befallen their village.
Even though they weren’t as energetic as they should have been, they enjoyed the food, and soon a small smile began to form on each of their lips. After all, there was the promise of rebuilding everything. The next morning, they would hold a funeral for those who had died, and they would slowly restore the village to what it once was.
It would take a long time, but they only appreciated the fact that they were still breathing today, that they had managed to live to see another period of peace in these lands.
Evan enjoyed the dinner party, but found himself with nothing to do afterwards. His mother was engaged in conversation with the other villagers, so he slipped away and found himself drawn to a secluded corner of the village.
Two of his personal bodyguards followed silently from behind, never speaking a word and never imposing, but close enough to protect him if anything happened.
Evan curiously approached what appeared to be a faint glow of light coming from the pier. It was covered by a lot of tall, thin trees, so he couldn’t make out what was causing the illumination.
"Your Highness..." one of the bodyguards spoke up in an uncertain tone of voice.
"I’ll just take a peek!" Evan promised.
The two bodyguards exchanged glances before nodding reluctantly.
Evan smiled in response before quietly walking towards the source of the light.
And there it was. A glowing orange light...
...coming from the symbol on a kid’s upper arm.
