Chapter 319: The Failed Healing

The entire Darkhelm castle was in uproar.

It wasn’t the same kind of frenzy as the wedding preparations just days before. This was the complete opposite of the joyous occasion.

Grief had coiled around the towering pillars, sinking into the very black stone of the castle as if it belonged there.

But then again, had it not always been here?

This oppressive rage was what they all had been witnessing for decades.

It was the arrival of the blessed healer who had turned the Darkhelm castle into a brightly lit home of happiness.

However, with this one incident, the lingering shadows of sorrow were back, pressing heavily onto the shoulders of the servants, forcing them to keep their heads down.

They dared not make any mistake as they hurried to do their assigned work.

In the center of this storm was Allen.

The Alchemist had been called urgently to check on Xion, and since then, it had been three hours.

This was the slowest, most agonizing time Darius had ever endured—even worse than the night his father whipped him and left him standing barefoot in the snow until dawn.

Darius felt utterly helpless and Allen wasn’t in any better condition either.

Other than giving His Grace the potions to strengthen Xion’s exhausted mana and body, he could offer no more help.

The hurricane that swirled in those venomous green eyes had Allen bow his head in shame.

"Why can’t we give him my eyes?! Is that not written in those ancient books you read?" Darius hissed, a bloody knife still clenched in his hand.

There was a deep wound just beneath his left eye, and if Allen hadn’t used his utmost strength to stop, that green eye would have been lying in his palm.

Behind the curtain, Xion’s chest barely rose and fell, as if even the act of breathing had become a struggle.

This sleeping person was the sole reason why Allen had grown so used to the gentle Archduke these past weeks. So much that he’d nearly forgotten the man’s true essence.

His Grace was generous just as he was cruel. However, there was no distinction between being cruel to others and himself.

With Xion’s accident, something had shifted in Darius. Though Allen couldn’t pinpoint exactly what, it was definitely not in a good direction.

With a silver dagger ready to gouge his own eye out and blood dripping down his sharp cheek before dripping down his sharp jawline, Darius looked almost deranged.

He was even more unhinged than before. Just the thought of it made his heart tremble.

Yes, Allen had indeed read something like transferring limbs and even tried it with a willing soldier but the results were disastrous.

Growing hands and legs was far easier than transplantation. But eyes were a different kind altogether.

They couldn’t regenerate unless completely destroyed, and even then, with little chance of success.

Not to mention that Xion hadn’t truly lost them. Destroying his eyes for that tiny hope was truly not something worthy of consideration.

Gritting his teeth, the alchemist replied, "We can’t! You’re not blood-related, his body would reject it. He’s already too weak, it could kill him. Teacher wouldn’t be able to handle the mana transfer from anyone else either. Only you, Your Grace."

The implication was clear enough. The regeneration, even if they tried it, would require an obscene amount of mana.

And now Allen had confirmed that for some reason, Xion’s body didn’t accept any other form of energy other than His Grace’s.

Darius didn’t know how to do the healing using his mana. Hence, everything had become null at this point.

The silence in the room was opposite to the loud thumping in his chest.

This was his teacher. A sweet young man who had taught him heavenly skills without asking anything in return. And now when Xion was in such a crisis, he couldn’t even alleviate his pain.

He had never felt this useless before.

When Darius turned around, Allen knew this was his cue to leave the room. After sparing a last glance at the figure of Xion behind the bed curtain, he left.

Barely had he crossed the first corner of the hallway when he was stopped by a worried Ray. The knight commander’s eyes were rimmed with dark circles, evidence of too many sleepless nights.

The concern etched into his handsome face pierced something inside Allen’s heart.

"How is he? Is he alright now? Is he awake? Can we meet him?"

Each question felt like a dagger, twisting the wound deeper.

"Call him His Grace!" Allen snapped under his breath. "He’s not just some healer you can tease and taunt at whim—he’s our lord now. And no, Raymond. He’s not okay! And I..."

His voice broke, surprising them both. "I can’t help him at all."

All the suppressed anger was poured onto the dumbfounded Ray.

"Teacher lost his sight to the poison. I don’t know how he made the antidote so fast, but it was already too late for his eyes. His Grace was going to take his eyes out for Teacher, Raymond," Allen paused as he sent an accusing glare to the dense-headed knight.

"And you still have the nerve to nurse a crush on Teacher? Do you really think that you have hidden it well and His Grace isn’t aware?"

He couldn’t help but let out a sneer of ridicule when he saw those baby-blue eyes widen in disbelief.

Allen successfully made the knight commander terrified only with a few of his words. Good, he thought. At least, now Ray wouldn’t do something stupid to incur His Grace’s wrath on him.

There wasn’t much of an expression on Allen’s face as he patted the warrior’s shoulder.

"I suggest you don’t show your face in front of His Grace or you won’t be able to make out alive anymore. His Grace had forgiven your crimes more than once already."

Ray stood there stupefied by both the news and the scolding. Normally he would have yelled back at Allen. However, right now none of their hearts were calm.

And in the master chambers, where silence should have meant peace—it now throbbed like a vein about to burst.
