Chapter 317: World In Shadow

Warmth.

That was the first thing Xion registered. Not the oppressive heat of fire, nor the icy numbness of mana loss he’d felt when he fainted, but the soft, indulgent kind he wanted to cocoon himself in.

The second thing though was the still beating heart in his chest. It was a tenacious little thing, really. Even more stubborn than Noxian.

Though his insides felt like they were twisting in agony, that his body could barely go on, it still continued to thud against his chest.

Strange, wasn’t it?

The system’s warning about the recoil hadn’t done it justice at all, and Xion could only say so after personally experiencing it.

The moment he had detonated the grenade, he’d been sure he was going to die.

He had felt his body quake from the inside out, limbs sealed and twisted in agony. He could vividly remember the sharp crack that had echoed through his ribs.

He was certain several had broken.

And yet, as he dragged in a shaky breath now, the expected pain didn’t come.

His lungs pulled in air without protest, and aside from the sharp, stabbing ache behind his left eye, his body continued to breathe.

Forcing his heavy lids open, he blinked slowly at the dimness dangling around him. Was it night or day?

’System? Hey, system—are you there?’

There was no reply.

His greedy yet strangely gentle system had gone completely silent.

A knot twisted in his stomach as the thought crashed into his somewhat hazy mind.

Had the system been punished because of his reckless actions?

After all, they barely got permission to use the mall again and he ended up buying such high-level items right off the bat.

Guilt scratched at his chest. By now he was sure his merit points would be touching the bottom once again. He wouldn’t even be able to buy something for his system to pacify the poor thing.

Sighing, he turned his head slightly. His right eye sank into the softness of the pillow. In an instant, the little sight he had was consumed by the darkness.

Had the light gone out?

However, it didn’t take long for him to discover that he had truly lost something precious in this battle.

Sudden panic seized his chest, as he saw the big and small blotches of darkness crowding his vision.

Ah, not just blotches. The view differed as he tried to see through each of his eyes one by one.

The right eye gave him black dots sprinkled all around while the left gave him... nothing at all.

It wasn’t the usual pitch-black darkness. Rather it was the absence of it. All he could see was the blank, hollow field of nothingness.

He hastily conducted a check on his body, running his mana toward his head. However, there was no result whatsoever.

He couldn’t find the cause of it nor was there any hope for recovery.

Was this the handiwork of poison? He thought it would not affect him anymore after the system’s antidote.

[Host, we should buy the luck-increasing charms.]

Those words resonated in his ears. So, this was the result of his bad luck then?

He had fought with that monster and destroyed the broken church.

So to say, the left eye was offering him this complete blindness as a present for messing with the system’s warning.

And in retrospect meant that even the products from the mall system wouldn’t work on his blindness.

Which also implied that Xion could hardly move about without knocking things over.

He had seen those blind patients struggling to do their daily tasks before.

He even offered a hand to them, thinking to himself that he was being a good person. But now that he was in this situation, he felt a different kind of despair.

If I didn’t manage to cure this... I’d end up stumbling over anything. I’ll cut myself. I’ll drop things. I will get hurt.

Yet that wasn’t even the worst part.

I’ll have to stop healing others.

That was the only thing he was good at! He wanted to be a good enough healer so he could stand shoulder-by-shoulder with the great Archduke.

But now...

I will become a burden to Darius.

Terror scraped across his ribs like glass.

Oh god, how was he going to tell this to Darius? His fingers clenched over the bedsheets as he blinked his eyes, trying hard to observe his surroundings.

He was definitely in his and Darius’ room. The scent of cedar with a hint of smokiness lingered on his pillow. It somehow managed to put his hysterical nerves at ease.

He craned his neck, squinting his eyes to make out the blurry figures surrounding him. There at the foot of the bed was that familiar side table where he would pile most of his papers and pens along with the huge crystal core.

His laziness had turned the expensive crystal core into his makeshift lamp.

Though now, he could only vaguely see the floating shine. He possibly wouldn’t be able to write either.

His breathing became erratic, tumbling out of his chapped lips in shaky pants.

His gaze traveled to the bed curtains beside him as they floated under the influence of the wind.

Ah, the room is empty. The implication that he was all alone seemed to gnaw at him terribly.

Yet, strangely enough, the ache behind the left eye seemed utterly familiar. Like a cursed deja vu?

With his head messed up, he didn’t think deeply as to why he was feeling like this. Or perhaps he was afraid to find what lay beneath all this would shatter something and make it irreparable.

Darius... I need to find him.

Tossing the warm duvet aside, he pushed himself off the cozy bed. After taking a few steps, he came to a new awareness that the vision of his right eye was a cruel illusion.

The constant pressure of using the barely there sight started to give him migraine, and each step he took resonated deep into his temples.

The dizziness hit him, forcing him to bump into the edge of the bed. His leg gave up and he crashed right onto the cold floor.
