Chapter 7. A Bowl of Noodles Cooked by My Wife Is More Than Enough!
At home.
Ye Chen put down his phone and let out a long exhale.
“Alright, it’s all settled now.”
From this moment on, there should be no further entanglement between him and Bai Xiyi.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen.
Bai Xiyan hummed a tune as she washed the dishes, her mood remarkably light.
The biggest obstacle between her and Ye Chen was finally behind them.
The heaviest weight in her heart had at last been lifted.
“Honey, let’s go to the furniture mall this afternoon and replace the sofa at home,” her clear, gentle voice rang out.
Ye Chen smiled softly and stood up, walking into the kitchen. “Sure, I’ll help you with the dishes.”
Bai Xiyan grinned sweetly, stood on her tiptoes, and planted a kiss on his cheek.
“You’re the best, hubby.”
Ye Chen pressed his lips together and wrapped an arm around her slender waist.
“You’re pretty amazing too, wifey.”
Husband and wife, perfectly in sync.
This was the life he had always wanted.
Together, they spent a few minutes finishing the dishes and tidying up the house.
Ye Chen took the opportunity to remove Bai Xiyi’s fingerprint from the smart lock before wrapping his arm around Bai Xiyan’s waist and leaving home.
They still drove the same G-Class, heading to a nearby furniture mall.
As they browsed, they first picked out a new sofa. With Bai Xiyan clinging to his arm, they wandered into a boutique shop.
“Hubby, do you like this one?”
“Hubby, this would look great on the sofa, don’t you think?”
“Let me buy you a cushion, your office chair doesn’t seem very comfortable.”
“Hehe, I’ll get you a pair of blue-light-blocking glasses, hubby!”
“…”
Watching Bai Xiyan skip around with a bright smile, Ye Chen couldn’t help but grin, genuinely happy.
In the past, Bai Xiyi had never once cared about the little things he needed in life. Most of the time, she had been the one taking, whether in daily life or career matters, Ye Chen had always been the one worrying and making arrangements.
But now, things were different.
Bai Xiyan was practically her opposite, she cared about his mood, his well-being.
Not just his career.
“Feels really good,” Ye Chen murmured with a soft chuckle, picking up their shopping bags and following her with light steps.
After an afternoon of shopping, they returned home just as the furniture store delivered their new sofa and a few small items.
The workers installed the new sofa and hauled away the old one.
Soon, the house was quiet again.
“Hubby, what do you want for dinner?” Bai Xiyan hugged his arm, resting her chin on his shoulder as she asked with a giggle.
Ye Chen grinned. “Whatever you make, I’ll eat.”
Bai Xiyan laughed. “That easy to please, huh?”
Ye Chen pressed his lips together.
In their over a year of marriage, Bai Xiyi had never once cooked for him.
“Heh, I’m not picky. As long as it’s made by you, I’ll love it!”
Bai Xiyan’s eyes shimmered as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Mwah~”
“Then let’s have noodles for dinner, hubby.”
???
Was she… openly flirting?
But it turned out he had overthought it, Bai Xiyan meant it literally.
Though simple, she put effort into the noodles, shaping the fried egg on top into a heart.
Sprinkled with some chopped scallions, it was a humble meal, yet it felt incredibly warm.
“Wait, let me take a picture and show off on my feed!” Ye Chen grinned, pulling out his phone to snap a photo.
“Dinner doesn’t need to be fancy, a bowl of noodles cooked by my wife is more than enough.”
With a few casual words, he posted this very “straightforward guy” moment to his social media.
Within seconds, his feed exploded.
“Damn, Lao Ye, didn’t you get divorced? You remarried already?”
“So you finally tamed Bai Xiyi, that proud peacock?”
“Wait, I just saw Bai Xiyi post about enjoying French cuisine!”
“Uh… what the hell is going on?”
“Lao Ye, don’t tell me you got married again this fast?”
“…”
Ye Chen’s feed was in chaos.
Bai Xiyi’s feed was no better.
“Xiyi, what’s going on with you?”
“What’s the deal between you and your Lao Ye?”
“Holy crap! I just watched your livestream comeback, Ye Chen actually remarried your sister?!”
“Xiyi… if you want to cry, just let it out.”
“You’re out here living your ‘quiet, elegant life,’ but those two are busy flaunting their love.”
“Tch. Pretty face, not much brains. Ye Chen’s such a catch, successful, domestic, warm, and you still divorced him.”
“Honestly, yeah. If my husband were half as good as Ye Chen, I’d never let him go.”
“…”
At a high-end restaurant.
Bai Xiyi had been basking in admiration just moments ago, but in the span of two minutes,
She had become the object of pity in her social circle.
Scrolling through the flood of comments, some even turning into a full-blown discussion, Bai Xiyi gritted her teeth and deleted the post.
Setting her phone down, she picked up her fork again, only to find the once-sophisticated, delicious meal now completely unappetizing.
Her mind was stuck on Ye Chen’s post.
“A bowl of noodles moved you that much? Your standards are so low.”
As she scoffed, her phone rang again.
She glanced at the screen, and her lips twitched.
It was Mom.
After hesitating for a few seconds, she answered.
“Xiyi, did you and A-Chen remarry?”
“You even made him noodles? That’s wonderful!”
“I told you not to be so hard on A-Chen. He’s such a good man, successful, family-oriented. Where else would you find a husband like him after divorce?”
“Enough! Since you two are patching things up, don’t come back here tonight. Head straight to the civil registry tomorrow to remarry! Your dad and I will prepare a nice meal so the whole family can celebrate!”
With that, Ye Chen’s mother-in-law, Zhao Meizhi, hung up in a hurry.
Leaving Bai Xiyi utterly crushed.
Her grip on the phone turned her knuckles white. She wanted to call back and explain,
But after two attempts, she gave up with a defeated sigh.
“Heh.”
“Tonight, I’m actually the one with nowhere to go?”
“Queen?”
“Pfft.”
Bai Xiyi laughed at herself, grabbed her bag, paid the bill, and walked out of the restaurant.
As she strolled down the bustling streets, surrounded by neon lights, her heart felt hollow.
Loneliness and regret swallowed her whole once again.
