Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So! -
Chapter 61: A Warning
Chapter 61: A Warning
Caesar dragged him off to the side.
Zayne stared at him with a cocked brow. "What’s wrong?"
"You’re aware she is a human, right?"
"Yes. So?"
"Do you know how complicated your situation is?" Caesar asked.
Zayne pocketed his hands. "You’re one to talk. Isn’t your wife human too? Though she doesn’t completely smell like one now. What did you do to her?"
Caesar narrowed his eyes on her. "Does she know?"
"Know what?"
"That you’re not human."
"No." Zayne shrugged. "And she doesn’t have to know."
"That’s what I said once, buddy. And guess what?" Caesar smiled sarcastically. "She found out, freaked out so bad, she locked herself up for days—"
"I can handle that."
"—Then she disappeared for months. I was searching all over for her and you know what it’s like when a mate you’ve marked vanishes from your life, don’t you? I almost lost my mind, Zayne and I do not think you’d want to know what that felt like."
"I don’t give a fuck, Caesar. If you could handle it, then I can."
Zayne’s voice grew deep with displeasure.
"What do you want me to do? Reject her? That won’t happen, ever, not even in anyone’s wildest dream. She is mine, and I’m keeping her. I don’t care what you say, but life can throw whatever it wants at me. The only thing that’s never going to change is her being mine. I’m never letting her go, not even if this earth is swallowing itself. She belongs to me, and only me."
Caesar stared at him. He folded his arms, tipping his head to the side. "You don’t know what you’re getting into, Zayne, and I’m telling you as someone who’s been there. Do you think you’re going to be as lucky as I? That it’ll eventually work out like it did for me?"
Zayne didn’t answer him. Every trace of amusement on his face was nowhere to be found.
"You have a whole bumpy ride ahead of you, that I’m sure of," Caesar said. "You can only hope your mate bond is strong enough. And I don’t think you’ve marked her. Your pheromones aren’t that strong on her. Does that not worry you?"
Zayne snapped his gaze over to him. "Meaning?"
"You know a lot of us are among humans. What if someone claims her? Never mind them, what about humans? What will you do if she falls in love with any of them and you—"
"That’s not going to happen."
"Who’s to say?" Caesar asked. "She’s unmarked. Your mate bond is very weak, I can barely smell your pheromones on her. You’re a supreme alpha like me, at least...scent-mark her?"
Zayne dragged a frustrated finger through his hair. "I don’t need you telling me this. Not right now, Caesar."
Caesar raised a brow. But shrugged. "Don’t regret this decision, Zayne."
The man snapped over to him. "Do you regret yours?"
"Me?" Caesar chuckled. "Heck, no. Adeline is everything to me. I wouldn’t give her up, not even if this world is burning to the crisp."
"Then why are you preaching to me?"
He laughed more. "Calm down—"
"Fuck off." Zayne groaned under his breath, hands balled in the pockets of his pants.
....
Turning away from one of the guests she’d held a conversation with, Evelyn came to a sudden stop, frowning the second she sighted Lyra. She’d arrived, along with Preston and Brandon.
But that wasn’t the problem. It was just who she was speaking to. A middle-aged man, and she was smiling flirtatiously at him. Or was it just her?
The thing was that she knew the man. Cesare Tiziano. He was around during the will reading as well. Why was he being so chummy with...Lyra?
It turned out it wasn’t just her who was confused because Brandon was furrowing his brows.
They crossed gazes and she was going to turn away, but then he began approaching her.
What did he want from her?
Brandon, with his hair slicked back classily and swathed in a nice pair of tailored Italian suits, grabbed her hand, leaving a peck on the back. He said, "You look beautiful, sis."
"And so do you, brother. What do you want from me though?" Evelyn asked.
He let out a defeated sigh, shrugging as he let go of her hand. "Do you think I’m like Preston who approaches with a motive?"
"Are you any different?"
"Perhaps."
She cracked a dry smile. "No matter what you people throw at me, it’s really never going to break me, Brandon. Don’t bother me."
She walked off, stepping past him.
"You know you’re going to have to make your relationship with Zayne Mancini public, right?"
That made her pause. She spun on her heel to peer at him. "It’s none of your business."
"Well, you can’t keep it from the media forever unless you want people to start finding out through stupid articles like what Preston created. Announce it yourself."
He wasn’t lying, and it annoyed her. If the media could just leave her alone.
Breathing out, she held her head high.
The main event was about to begin and she couldn’t falter. Not now.
People had begun flooding into the main hall where the event was properly to take place. The front-row seats that had been well arranged, facing the high platform were already being filled with guests.
Zayne was seated on the second floor row, a blank expression on his face.
"I’d expect you to sit with your mate, you know?" Alessio, his brother who’d of course arrived as promised, was plopped down next to him.
Dario, the eldest of the three brothers, smirked, throwing an arm over Zayne’s shoulder. "This is better. It’s like a little family reunion."
He looked a tad bit similar to Zayne, down to the dark strands of his silky hair. On the bridge of his nose rested a pair of glasses, his free hand shoved into the pocket of his black suit pants.
Zayne slapped his arm off, crossing his legs. His eyes glided down to the first row where Evelyn was seated. She’d turned her head, making eye contact with him.
The look in her eyes was clearly asking why he was seated over there. But this event was about her. He wanted her to be able to handle herself without relying on him. She would be fine, he was sure of it.
Everything will go as planned.
