Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So! -

Chapter 58: I Don’t Get It!
Lincoln balled his hands against the table.
"I met her mother first. Adriana. We fell in love. But then Sage met her. He fell in love with her as well. The thing is, she didn’t love him. She told him more times than I could count that she didn’t love him. But you see the problem was... Sage was obsessed with her. He knew he was better than I in every way and that he could have her if he persisted. And that was of course against her will. I tried to reason with him so many times. She doesn’t love you, why are you doing this?"
"But my brother..." Lincoln swallowed. "He was just... obsessed with her in a way that frightened her. He wanted her to be his no matter what it took. Mind you, he already had his first wife who was Preston, Lyra, and Brandon’s mother. She was heartbroken, knowing the man she loved was completely head over heels for another woman."
"I tried to make Sage understand he was hurting his wife in the process of what he was doing. But he didn’t care. Yes, their marriage had been an arranged one he didn’t want, but still..."
He pinched between his brows. "All Sage wanted was Adriana, to have her at all costs. He didn’t care that she was the woman I loved. He didn’t care that she didn’t love him. So long as she was his, he couldn’t care less about anything else."
Lincoln balled his hands against the table. "Adriana and I planned to leave the country together, because it felt like Sage was losing his mind. Who knows what he would do the longer this entire nonsense went on? Do you know what he did?"
Zayne watched him, listening silently. He asked, "What?"
"He kidnapped me before we could leave. Mr. Mancini, a man who would go to the extent of abducting his own younger brother for a woman, how crazy do you think he is? Would you do that?"
"Oh," was the only response Zayne gave.
Lincoln stared at him. "He abducted me, saying she’d never see me again if she didn’t choose him. Yes, he forced her into choosing him. Of course, we weren’t sure if he meant to hurt me. I doubt he’d ever do. Sage had always treated me very fine, and that’s what confused me. How he could suddenly turn that way because of a woman. Adriana didn’t want me to get hurt, so she gave in to him, marrying him. He made her his, he succeeded. But what was the point?"
"How so?" Zayne asked.
"She didn’t love him. Her heart belonged to me. I don’t understand why he seemed so surprised and hurt, finding out she... that we...had an affair. Listen, she wanted me, okay? Sage just wouldn’t let her—-"
"What are you doing, Lincoln," Zayne interrupted, questioning.
"W-what do you mean?"
"You slept with your brother’s wife, the woman you knew he loved just as much as you did, and you’re trying to...justify it?"
Lincoln slammed his hands on the table. "He didn’t love her! He was obsessed with her."
"And you’re the one who wasn’t?" Zayne questioned. "If all you did was love her, you wouldn’t have indulged her. Do you know what I’m trying to say? An affair is unjustified. You are no different from Sage whom you’re criticizing. You would have done the same thing he did were the roles reversed. You are not a victim here. That woman was. Unfortunately stuck in the middle of two men strangling each other at the neck, and neither one cared about her feelings. You have no morals, Lincoln."
"Mr. Mancini—"
"If you really cared for her, you’d have saved her from Sage, not indulged her in an affair. You are just as bad as Sage. Do not pretend to be a saint. That, you are not."
Lincoln’s chest rose and fell in heavy breathing. He dropped back into his chair, balling his fists in frustration.
"Continue from where you stopped." Zayne squinted his eyes spitefully.
"Even after he found out we had an affair, he forgave her. Sage would do anything for Adriana. That man would even eat sand if she asked him to, that was how head over heels he was for her. He would hurt anything in his way, but not her. Never her. In his eyes, she was like some egg he needed to be careful with in order not to cause a crack."
"And you think you loved her more than he did?"
"If he truly loved her, he would’ve let her be happy with me. It was mere obsession, Mr. Mancini!" Lincoln bit out. "Eventually he found out that she was pregnant with Evelyn, but even that wasn’t enough reason to let her go. Instead, he decided to take the responsibility. It should’ve been me who was there, but no, Sage took my part away from me, seeing her through the entire process. And when Evelyn was born... Would you like to know what he said to me?"
"Go ahead."
"He told me that this child would never know me as her father, because he and only he would be her father. He would raise her like his own and he would never allow me to experience what it was like to be a father. That was his punishment for what I did. I wasn’t allowed near Evelyn. I couldn’t be a father to her. Hell, even he was the one who named her, refusing me any single part in all of it. But do you want to know the part that hurt the most...?"
Zayne folded his arms.
"At some point... Adriana actually began to fall in love with Sage, forgetting me. They were happy. He did everything for her, and she looked at him the way she used to look at me. I was seeing everything that should’ve been mine become his. Why? How could she eventually fall in love with him? Was it how nice he was to her? How he kiss the ground she walked on? I could do that too. I could do that if she wanted. If she asked, I’d also do anything for her! I don’t get it!"
