Chapter 57: A DNA Test
Chapter 57: A DNA Test
TWO P.M
Evelyn sat in her office at the company, going through her computer with a desperate look on her face.
She had been so busy she’d thrown aside getting a dress for herself. The event was tomorrow night. And somehow, she’d forgotten while completely piled up with some unfinished work left by her father.
Leaning and dropping her head back against the chair, she groaned, shutting her eyes with an exhausted look on her face.
"What am I going to do now?"
She slapped the back of her hand against her face, sighing.
"I don’t have anything to wear, Lucia."
"Huh?" Lucia, who was in the office with her, arranging the documents she was piling, blinked. "Wha...what do you mean?"
"I’ve been so busy that I completely forgot I needed something nice to wear to the event."
Lucia’s lips fell apart slightly. "Why aren’t you panicking?"
"Panicking?" Evelyn peeked one eye open at her. "What do you mean?"
"You’ve got to look your best, boss. The day is about you. You can’t come looking... anything but amazing, you know."
"I never said I would."
"But..." Lucia eyed her. "I’m just worried. I mean, this is a really big eve—"
Evelyn’s phone vibrated in her pocket. She creased her brows wondering who would be calling her.
She looked at the screen, frowning at the unknown number.
"Is everything alright, boss?" Lucia asked.
Evelyn nodded. "Yes. You may go now."
Lucia packed up the rest of the documents and left, shutting the door behind her.
The call came a second time. Evelyn answered.
"Hello. Who’s this?"
[Hello, is this Ms. Evelyn Darkwood?]
"Uh... Yes? Why?"
[Well, there is a delivery out for you from Louis Vuitton by the evening. Will you be available to pick it up?]
"Louis Vuitton?" she asked.
[Yes, ma’am]
"But I didn’t make any order."
[Yes, that’s right]
"Then why are you—"
[It was sent to you by someone]
"Who?"
[From what I have here. It says it’s from your husband. Mr. Zayne Mancini. Is this correct ma’am?]
My husband...
Evelyn lowered her head, chuckling silently with a shake of her head. "Yes, that’s correct. He’s my husband."
[I see. Is four p.m. alright?]
"Make it five if it’s possible. I leave work at four]
[Alright, ma’am. We’ll have it delivered]
Evelyn hung up.
She stared at the screen and bit into her bottom lip, suppressing the smile that tugged at her face.

Lincoln walked into the fancy restaurant, holding a confused expression.
When Zayne Mancini had called to meet up with him, he’d been taken aback, wondering why. Yes, Mancini was close with Sage, but that didn’t mean they talked. So what’s the reason?
Balling his hands by his sides, he eyed the interior, gaze stopping on the table occupied by none other than him.
Zayne Mancini, seated with his legs crossed, swathed in a fitted, short-sleeved black polo and high-waisted clean crisp, well-tailored trousers.
Every now and then, he would glance at the wrist watch clasped around his wrist, clearly expecting him any moment from now. But for reasons he didn’t want to dwell on, he found it hard to walk over there.
Why did he want to see him? What for?
Zayne Mancini turning his head straight over to his direction suddenly, wasn’t what he’d expected, and it’d caused him to flinch.
The man cocked a brow at him, blue eyes filled with actual displeasure.
Lincoln swallowed.
How was Sage ever casual with this young man? There was just something so frightening about him. Looking into his eyes felt like falling off a cliff and it always gave him chills.
Composing himself, he walked over, forcing a smile on his face.
"Hello, Mr. Mancini."
"This is why I don’t like you, Lincoln," Zayne said, tone biting.
Lincoln blinked. "W-what do you mean?"
"You arrived here twenty minutes ago. But you decided to waste my time. Did you think I enjoyed waiting on you?"
He swallowed. "Y-you knew when I arrived?"
"Sit down, Lincoln. I don’t have all the time in the world. I have to go home."
"Right, right, of course." Lincoln nodded, taking a seat on the opposite chair. He asked, "So...why did you ask to see me?"
Zayne took out a folded paper from his pocket and slid it across the wooden desk. "You called Evelyn through an unknown number."
He said quickly before Lincoln could speak, "Don’t try to deny it. I know it was you. That’s not why I’m here though. It’s none of my business why you decided to call your niece through a different line."
Lincoln stared at him. "Mr. Mancini..."
"What is your relationship with Evelyn?" he questioned. "No, scratch that. My real question is, between you and Sage, who is her real father?"
Lincoln went as still as a statue.
Seconds beat between them. Minutes, minutes, and minutes of silence. He couldn’t find his voice to speak.
Zayne held his gaze. "Mr. Lincoln."
"W-what are you talking about, Mr. Mancini. Sage is of course her father, why would—"
"Really?"
He narrowed his gaze on him.
"So if a DNA is done between both of you, it wouldn’t come out positive?"
"Mr. Mancini—"
"Who are you fooling, Lincoln?" he questioned. "Do you realize that a DNA test is not even needed? Look at both of you. Ask a stranger between you and Sage who’s more likely to be her father, you’d think they’d pick Sage? Have you looked at yourself, and then her?"
"Mr. Mancini—"
"Just tell me the truth. Are you her biological father or not? And if so, why isn’t she aware? Why is she in the dark about it? Why is Sage—"
"It wasn’t my fault!"
Lincoln shook his head.
"It wasn’t my fault, but I’m always the one to be blamed. I am the one who’s been blamed for everything. Sage isn’t that great of man you think he is. My brother was fucking selfish, but you don’t get it because it was done to me!"
