Chapter 50: Isn’t It Unfair?

Evelyn’s eyes trailed down to the comments left below the articles. So many opinions were being expressed, and each one was completely against her. Some even questioned why the corporation wasn’t transferred to Preston.

She tossed the tablet on the sofa, fingers combing through her hair.

"Are you okay?" Zayne asked.

"Don’t I look okay?"

"No."

His eyes roamed over her.

Evelyn turned away to step back into the bathroom, but he was quick to grab her. "Talk to me."

"What do you want me to say?" Her head snapped up, and she fixed him with a glare. "That I’m restless? Well, yes I am. I don’t like public scrutiny and I never have. Of course, it was eventually going to happen, I know that, I just didn’t want it to be like this. Then again, can I really say that I didn’t expect something insane like this from Preston? I don’t need proof to know that he schemed this entire thing to back me to the corner, force the company off my hands or even manipulate me into giving it willing—"

Zayne palmed her cheeks, forcing her still. He stared right into her eyes saying, "Calm down."

She breathed, soft puffs of air leaving her mouth.

"We’ll fix this, he said. It’s just an article, nothing more. How much harm can it do?"

"The reporters, Zayne," she said, swallowing. "They’re going to be everywhere."

"We’ll handle that too."

"You don’t understand. They’re going to be persistent. For how long can you keep them off my back?"

He had no response, but instead asked, "What do you want to do then?"

"I don’t know."

She shook her head.

"Then, what do you think your father would’ve done in a situation like this?" he pressed, still holding her.

She responded, "Holding a conference to control the situation would be the ideal thing to do."

"But...?" he asked.

"My father wouldn’t hold a conference," she continued. "He would stay silent for the time being and grasp the issue at hand before stepping off for a public conference."

"So what will you do?" Zayne pressured her on.

Evelyn took a deep breath. "I’ll continue with my initial plan. Talk to the list of potential investors and see how it goes."

"Good." He tucked a few strands of her hair behind her ear. "Breathe and let’s begin there."

Brandon, seated on the ottoman, clad in a suit and a tablet in hand, frowned the more he stared at the screen.

"What is this rubbish?" he questioned.

His assistant who stood next to him, swallowed. "Sir..."

"Who?" he snapped at him, uncrossing his legs. "Answer me, Elio! Who wrote this stupid article?"

The man Elio hesitated, but he confessed, "Your brother, sir."

"My brother?"

Brandon was taken aback.

"That is impossible. Preston wouldn’t pull this sort of stunt, not without letting me know. Are you sure about this?"

"Very much, sir." Elio nodded. "You ordered me to keep an eye out. I verified. The article was ordered by him. He funded it."

Brandon lowered his gaze to the device. "I see," he mumbled, waving a hand of dismissal. "You’re dismissed."

Elio bowed to him, straightened, and spun on his heels, leaving.

Brandon sat, staring into nothing.

They really had made these plans without his knowledge. What exactly was Preston pulling at?

The veins at his neck popped and he sprang to his feet, saying, "Alexa, call Preston."

[Calling Preston, Now]

The call went through for a few seconds before it was eventually answered.

[Brandon] The voice belonged to Preston.

"What is this article?" Brandon questioned. "What do you think you’re doing Preston?"

[Now, what are you talking about?]

"Do you think I’m stupid? That I wouldn’t know you’re behind it? Is that why you kept it from me, because you knew I wouldn’t back you up in this bullshit?"

[Brandon—]

"What about Lyra? Did she know of this? Of this beautiful plan of yours, huh?"

Silence stretched on the other side of the phone for a long while

Preston sighed, saying. [Don’t you think you’re overreacting just a little? Brandon, it’s like you said, you wouldn’t have supported it anyway, so what would’ve been the point of involving you? And Lyra, she was rather just there to hear me out. Relax brother, don’t overthink any of this]

Brandon’s fingers dug into his palm, the harder he balled his fists. "Have those articles taken down."

[What?]

"Have them taken down, or I’ll do it myself!"

[Brandon, don’t you dare!]

"Are you out of your mind, Preston? Are you really losing it?" Brandon dragged furious fingers through the brown of his hair. "You were fighting for a corporation even I believe is rightfully yours. But now... what exactly are you doing? What are you becoming?"

[Brandon—]

"Do you realize that what you’re doing could destroy TDG?" he ground out. "Evelyn is still very inexperienced and you are taking this too far."

[Inexperienced?]

Preston burst into laughter on the other side of the phone.

[She seemed pretty experienced to me, Brandon. It all makes sense now, why father often had her around him, you know, having her do things that should have been me in the first place. You recall we’d often wondered why he allowed her to do some of his presentations for him, why he dragged her to work with him. I hate to admit it, but that old man had always had the intention of making her his successor. That nonsense of him not loving her was complete crap. Oh, Father favored her more than he did any of us. Shocking, isn’t it?]

"I don’t care," Brandon said. "Whether our father loved her more, I do not care!"

[But isn’t it unfair?]

"Meaning what?"

[How could he love her more when we all know he’s not even her biological father, huh? It makes no fucking sense. How could he choose her over us? How could he—]

"So?" Brandon asked. "So what if he did? Who cares? You’re not the one who was alienated! You’re not the one who always took the blame for every little inconvenience. What is wrong with you?"
