Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So!
Chapter 49: Rising Article

Chapter 49: Rising Article

Evelyn turned toward the large wooden double door.

She gripped her sprawling dress, the jewelry around her neck itching. She didn’t want to cry. She wanted to tough it out, the idea of marrying a man she didn’t know—didn’t want. But being a princess should have been all the reality check she needed.

Dreams weren’t something she could have.

When the announcement of her arrival dropped and the doors were pushed open by the guards, her eyes rose, the wetness breaking before she could stop it.

They poured down her face, but that didn’t stop her father from interlocking their arms and walking her down the aisle.

That had to be him.

Evelyn thought.

The man she was to marry—the one she’d been betrothed to. He stood there at the altar, straight and incredibly tall, hands clasped behind him. The dark strands of his hair were left unbound, pouring just a tad bit past neck length.

He’d turned his head the second she arrived at the altar and was left there by her father. The first thing she noticed was the blue of his eyes and then the sudden smile that pooled at his lips.

The man was beautiful—quite the opposite of what she’d expected.

"Mine." His voice vibrated, rough and deep, taking her aback. "You’re my mate, and that makes you, mine."

All these, he was saying to her, left her baffled. What exactly did he mean by such a sentence?

Mate? What did that even mean?

How could a creature like him look anything but like the beast he was? Since when have monsters looked like...angels?

"What is your name?" he asked, bright golden pooling over the blues of his eyes for a second before returning to normal.

But she saw it, responding in a cracked, barely audible voice. "Evelyn. M-my name is Evelyn."

"Call me Zayne." He grasped her hand as gently as possible, helping her onto the altar where he stood. Then he bowed, as gentlemanly as he could, bringing her hand to his lips to leave a soft kiss. He didn’t rise. But instead met her gaze at that level, saying, "In every lifetime, Evelyn, you will continue to be mine. My mate. And, I will always find you. Because not even death can and will ever do us apart."

Everything went black, and she took a sort of breath that almost felt like she hadn’t breathed for the past few hours.

"Evelyn." That voice.

She blinked her eyes open, frowning painfully at the bright light.

"Evelyn."

Someone’s face popped into her vision. Zayne. He was staring her down apprehensively with his head tilted.

"Are you okay?" he asked.

Evelyn quickly jackknifed herself into a sitting position on the bed. Her shoulders were rising and falling in heavy breathing, eyes flickering as she thought over what the hell had just happened.

She regarded him with a questioning look. "What the heck was that?"

Zayne was lost, unsure what she was talking about. "What do you mean?"

"In every lifetime, you’ll continue to be mine?" She frowned with an expectant look, wanting an answer to what he had no idea of.

He was clueless.

"Not even death can do us apart?" Now she sounded annoyed.

Zayne blinked, trying to make sense of her words. "Evelyn—"

"You said these things to me!" she exploded, voice sharp. "Why are you acting clueless?"

"Because I don’t know what you’re talking about?" A frown crept across his face. "Where and when did I ever say such? It’s morning and you just woke up. You slept off last night when we were talking about your company."

Now, she paused.

Wait...

A dream. All that was a dream. It wasn’t real...

But...but it felt so real. His touch, everything felt so real. Even his eyes—

Evelyn quickly touched her face, noting the wetness on her face. Had she cried in reality too?

"Did you have a nightmare?" Zayne probed, worried. "Your face is a teary mess."

Instead of answering him, she shoved out of the bed and rushed into the bathroom.

"Evelyn—"

She slammed the door shut.

Her heart was hammering against her chest, body cold with chills.

What the hell kind of dream was that? Why would she even dream of such a thing? Zayne, a wolf man? And she...was betrothed to him?

Wait no, why did it feel so real? This was nothing but a stupid dream. It made no sense at all. She could even say it felt as if she’d watched some kind of—

"Argh!"

Evelyn slapped her palm against her forehead, groaning at the splitting headache she was suddenly experiencing. "That hurts!" She staggered her way over to the sink, turning the tap on to splash her face with a palm full of water.

"What is wrong with me? What’s happening to—"

"Evelyn," Zayne’s voice resounded, calling. "Evelyn, come out for a second."

Her brows furrowed. He sounded off like something was wrong.

Turning off the tap, she made her way to the door, leaving the bathroom. Zayne was pacing back and forth, browsing through the tablet he held.

"What’s...wrong?" she asked, cautiously.

The man came to a stop. He looked at her and she didn’t like that expression.

"Zayne... What is going on?"

"You’re not going to like this, Evelyn," he said.

"Let me see." Evelyn took the device from him. She scrolled into the webpage, brows lifted at the heading of an article.

[FOLLOWING THE FALL: What’s Really Happening Inside TDG?]

"What is this?" she glanced at him.

"Read it."

[Following the death of Sage Darkwood, the alleged newly appointed owner of TDG, the once—dominant empire appears to be cracking within. According to insiders, it is suffering from an internal drought of leadership, direction, and trust.

In a move that has sent tremors, a group of stakeholders, previously known to be loyal shareholders, have officially cut ties with the company. But their departure didn’t end with a quiet exit. Instead, they’ve sold their shares to none other than the first son of Sage Darkwood, Preston Darkwood.

They have also shifted their entire investment portfolio into Velinova, Preston Darkwood’s company which one can call ’A rising star.’ According to many, it could very well be the next dangerous rival of TDG.

"Sage was a great businessman," one of the shareholders admitted. "It’s such a shame he left the empire to a woman who couldn’t handle it. There is quite a lot of confusion, mismanagement, frankly speaking, TDG is no longer the same. The vision is barely alive."

"This isn’t just a transfer of shares," says another. "This is a transfer of trust. TDG is no longer untouchable."

Many questions have been sparked. Is the end of TDG coming to light?]
