Chapter 44: What Do You Think It Is?

Chapter 44: What Do You Think It Is?

"I find it quite amusing if I’m to be honest."

"Oh. Is that so?" Evelyn cracked a smile. "You think I’m entertaining? Well, that’s new information. I thought I was making you miserable—that I was driving you out of your mind."

Zayne shrugged. "Sometimes."

She batted her lashes at him, her growing smile almost a threat. "See, if you don’t let me sleep peacefully in that guest room, you’ll wake up to a lot of mess."

"What more can you do that I haven’t seen? Put salt in my coffee? Shiver me timbers. You frighten me, baby girl."

He laughed, tone condescending.

Evelyn narrowed her eyes at him, biting hard into her lips. His thumb rubbed at her chin, freeing her bottom lip from her bite. "You’re going to hurt yourself," he said cackling under his breath.

She didn’t even get to bite back, because he’d rolled off into the empty side of the bed.

"Get enough sleep. You have your company to deal with tomorrow. I won’t be there with you."

"I don’t need you to! I can handle myself just fine!" She got up, proceeding to leave the bed, his arm, however, came around her waist, grabbing and yanking her back down into the material.

"Let go of me!"

He didn’t. If anything, he held tighter, pulling her up against his solid chest. His chin rested atop her head, the firm hold he had on her giving her no chance to slip away from him.

Evelyn didn’t move anymore or even bother to wiggle out of his hold. She gave up, letting out a deep breath.

"That bruise on your face," Zayne’s voice vibrated, soft regardless. "Who gave it to you?"

"Why are you asking?"

"Evelyn—"

"It’s none of your business."

"But you know it’s my business no matter how stubborn you want to be about it."

She sighed under her breath. "My sister. I had a little trouble with her."

His arms came tighter around her. He was pissed, but he wasn’t saying a word.

She almost chuckled, mumbling, "Don’t worry though. I gave it right back to her."

"Oh?" He did sound surprised.

"It felt nice..." Her lips stretched into a smile. "It was the fight time I ever stood up to her. You should’ve seen the look on her face."

Zayne stifled his laughter, amused nonetheless.

Seven in the morning and Evelyn saw to it that she completely avoided Zayne. She’d readied herself for work, left before he even woke up, but she left him a surprise—one that she knew would be earning her call after call in probably a few minutes or more.

"Thank you, Enzo," she said as she stepped out of the car.

She turned toward the sprawling building of TDG, taking a deep breath before walking into the company.

"Good morning, boss."

"Good morning, ma’am."

The workers greeted her as she walked past them toward the escalator. All she gave in response was a polite smile.

The second her feet left the escalator, her phone vibrated, and she remembered Zayne. It had to be him. No one else.

Evelyn swiped into her messages.

PEACOCK: Where the fuck are you?

She giggled, typing back immediately: Why are you asking? You’re awfully clingy, you know that? Can’t even last twenty-four hours without me.

PEACOCK: You little shit!

PEACOCK: You snipped my ties! What the hell is wrong with you?

She responded: You’re talking like I didn’t warn you. Salt in your coffee? You really thought that was all I had up my sleeve?

PEACOCK: What’s next? You’ll burn the house down?

She burst into laughter, one that earned looks from the workers, and she was quick to clear her throat, composing herself.

But she did reply to him: Maybe. Depends.

The phone immediately rang. It was Zayne. However, instead of answering, she forwarded the call. She had a meeting in five minutes with the shareholders and she didn’t want to hear him yell into the phone.

She was sure she would laugh, and that would just make the entire situation worse.

PEACOCK: Answer the damn phone, Evelyn!

Or what?: She asked.

PEACOCK: Answer the phone.

PEACOCK: Evelyn!!!

More messages kept barraging into her phone. He was raging, and it was kind of cute, it almost made her chuckle.

’I have to go. I’ll see you at home; She typed, turning off her phone to head straight to her office.

A few minutes later, a lady walked into the room.

"Boss."

Evelyn lifted her gaze from the files she was stacking. "Oh, hello, Lucia."

Lucia, her personal assistant, smiled. "It’s time. They’re all waiting in the boardroom."

"Do you have any idea why they’ve requested this meeting?" Evelyn inquired.

Lucia shook her. "Not at all, boss. It came out of nowhere if I’m to be honest."

"Don’t worry. I’ll have to find out for myself." Evelyn rose from her seat. "You can distribute these documents to each department. I’ve gone through and approved the ones that needed to be done."

"Yes, boss."

She left the office, beelining for the boardroom. Stepping through the door, she was of course met with Preston and every other shareholder of TDG. The only person missing was Zayne.

Everyone stood to their feet for a brief greeting before settling back down. She sat in the head chair, crossing eyes momentarily with each of them.

"May I ask the reason for this meeting?"

Lyra was the one who spoke this time around. "Sorry for the impromptu meeting, sister. But we’ve all come to a decision."

Decision?

Evelyn crinkled her brows. "What decision?"

Lyra glanced at everyone, saying, "You may submit now."

Evelyn could only get confused with every passing minute. What were they submitting? What in the world was going on?

The first to push her document toward her was Marcella. Evelyn picked the paper up and began to skim through it. But the more she read, the more she squinted, appearing confused.

"What’s the meaning of this?" she questioned.

Preston was the one to speak this time around. "What do you think it is?"
