Betrothed To An Alpha? I Don't Think So!
Chapter 43: A Dream First Kiss

Chapter 43: A Dream First Kiss

Evelyn stepped out of the closet with a pair of her clothes in her hand.

She came face to face with Zayne who’d just stepped into the room, his computer in his palms.

She looked like she’d just freshened up, dark hair loose to her bottom and very much still wet. She was gazing at him, green eyes bouncing as they ran up and down his frame.

The mischief in those eyes—the moving of her mouth, he knew she was going to say something and it wasn’t going to be good.

But that didn’t bother him. No, what bothered him was just how good she looked. He liked looking at her, and every day, it felt like she got...would he call it prettier?

Evelyn was beautiful. Slender in all the right ways, with those big green eyes of hers that complemented her dark hair that almost appeared dyed even though it wasn’t.

Such a shame she was a brat with a capital B.

And there came whatever she was about to spill—

"Why are you staring at me, Zayne Mancini?" she enunciated his name. "What are you thinking about, huh? You better knock it off."

"I wasn’t thinking about anything," he said as he kept his computer aside. "Where are you going by the way?"

"Where does it look like I’m going?" she asked with that tone of hers, brows cocked.

"The guest room?"

"Yes. Didn’t I tell you I was no longer interested in sharing the same room as you? Now you can have this room all to yourself and eat it. Shove it down your throat too if you will."

She jabbed a finger into his chest and turned to leave. Zayne snatched her arm pulling her back.

"What is your problem?"

"My problem?" She raised a brow. "No, I should be asking you that. What? Are you suddenly afraid to sleep alone? What do you want from me?"

He stared at her.

She was right. He should be happy he wouldn’t have her messing with his sleep anymore. But...

Had he just gotten too used to her, that now, having the room all to himself felt...a tad bit lonely. She made the bed warm, and all of a sudden now, it felt cold, he found it hard to even sleep.

So, he asked, "Would it kill you to live normally with me in this house?"

"And would it kill you to leave me alone?" she questioned back. "I’m not your wife."

He resisted the urge to roll his eyes. "Are you mad? Is that the problem?"

"Mad at what? That you called me a damsel in distress?"

"Oh, so that is why you’re like this?"

"Let go of me, Zayne." Evelyn glared at him.

"Do you want me to say sorry?" Zayne asked, the frown on her face being the only answer he needed. "I’m sorry."

She shook her head at him. "That’s not sincere enough."

The man let out a soft breath and grabbed at the tips of her fingers. He brought her hand to his lips, leaving a soft kiss on the back. "I’m sorry, baby girl. Tell me, is this sincere enough?"

Evelyn’s green eyes widened to the size of saucers. She frantically blinked, lashes flickering as she swallowed, abruptly snatching her hand back.

She turned, facing away from him, and palmed her mouth, listening to the sound of her pounding chest. There it was again, burning, breaking like firecrackers, and rushing through her like adrenaline.

What is wrong with me?

She was confused. What was she getting all—

"Look at your face." His voice vibrated as he stepped around in front of her, body hunched and head tilted to meet her lowered gaze. "You’re red. Why are you red, Evelyn? Did I make you flustered?"

That amusement in his tone was annoying. It was irritating, and there was nothing she wanted to do more than punch that face of his.

She scoffed, exhibiting nothing but nonchalance towards his words. "Flustered? Me? You wish! You’re not the first man to have ever kissed my hand. Don’t flatter yourself."

Zayne rather smirked at her words, humoured. He said, "For someone who’s never even experienced a first kiss, you sure do have a lot to say."

"That’s different!" she snapped at him.

He raised a brow.

Evelyn balled her fists. "What?"

"I could give you your dream first kiss if you want," he said, straightening up. "And I’ll make it one you’d never forget."

She craned her neck to lock gazes with him, chest thumping in her ears. Her throat worked in a swallow, and she forced out a chuckle, averting her gaze. "I don’t want a first kiss from you. I don’t even need to ask to know you’re a terrible kisser."

"Oh?"

His hand gripped her cheek abruptly to keep her steady.

"Want to find out?" he asked.

Evelyn’s eyes fluttered. She gulped and slapped his hand off, taking a step back. "I-I’m not interested. And no, I’m still not going to share the room with you." She felt like she could barely breathe. "Tomorrow, I’m taking my clothes to the guest room."

She hurried past him, making her way over to the door with haste. She grabbed the handle, opening it, but then his figure came behind her, palms coming down flat against the door and slamming it closed.

Zayne mumbled, "You can’t force your way into my space however you like just to leave whenever you want. That’s not fair, Evelyn."

Evelyn drank in a deep breath to steady the rush all over her body. Too close, he was too close, she could practically taste his oozing body heat.

Her throat bopped in a thick swallow. She twisted her head to meet his gaze, saying, "What are you going to do then? Make me stay?"

"Very much so," he responded.

"You—"

He scooped her off the floor into his arms, turning to head towards the bed.

"Zayne, put me down right now!"

He looked at her face, amusement evident in his eyes. "I don’t think you want me to drop you."

"I’m not asking you to drop me! Put me to my feet!" She shot him a furious look, gripping the collar of his shirt.

The man dropped her into the bed. But she grasped at his arms, pulling him along. He held his weight off her with his palms against the mattress, body hovering above hers.

"You are one stubborn human."

"You haven’t even seen half of my attitude." She leveled a seething glare at him.

His head tilted as he studied her, humoured. "Have I ever told you that I minded your attitude at all? Hm?"
