Chapter 96: Chapter 96 Did the Old Hen Turn into a Spirit?_1
The next morning, Nanzhi got up and went to the backyard, she was startled.
Because the two old hens at home had been laying eggs so diligently these past few days, she had gotten into the habit of collecting eggs every morning upon waking, and then steaming Egg Custard for Zhiyu.
Even though she was aware of their capabilities, she was still dumbfounded to see eight or nine eggs in the simple chicken coop.
Had these old hens become spirits?
How could they have laid so many in one night?
The two old hens seemed to breathe a sigh of relief as if they had collapsed on the ground when they saw Nanzhi coming.
They had been terrified all of last night, but now that the master had arrived, they were safe!
Seeing the two old hens sprawled helplessly on the ground, Nanzhi was worried that they might be dying. She thought about checking their breath but gave up the idea when she saw their sharp beaks. She only tugged at their claws a bit and felt their weak struggle, which set her mind at ease.
They should be fine as long as they can still struggle. Looking at the pile of eggs, she realized they must be tired from laying so much and decided to feed them more locusts later.
Delighted, she bent down to gather the eggs and then headed to the kitchen with her bounty.
After mother and son had their fill of Egg Custard for breakfast, they touched their round bellies and remarked.
Life was truly great now.
After finishing the meal, Nanzhi went to sort out the Dried Meat in the kitchen, taking the thoroughly dried pieces with her to the cellar.
The family’s cellar wasn’t big, just housing their grain storage, all sorts of it totaling over three hundred pounds, along with several dozen pounds of Dried Meat. As long as nothing unexpected happened this year, she and Zhiyu could wait for Shen Wenchen to come back and get them!
After properly packing away the Dried Meat, Nanzhi recounted the stored grain and then left the cellar.
Just as the sun had risen, Shen Miaomiao’s voice calling from outside the door could be heard.
It was then that Nanzhi remembered that the young girl had said she would come over to play, so she hurriedly went to open the door.
"How come you’re here so early today?" Looking at the excited Shen Miaomiao, Nanzhi teased with a smile, "Don’t you usually sleep until noon?"
Hearing what Nanzhi said, Shen Miaomiao’s face turned as red as a berry, and she replied softly in protest, "No, that’s not true! Sister Nanzhi, you’re so mean!"
Seeing her embarrassment, Nanzhi pretended to be surprised, "Is that so? Could I have mistaken somebody else? Is it Jingzhi who sleeps till noon every day?"
Shen Zhiyu, standing to the side, immediately shook his head when he heard his mother mention Uncle Jingzhi, "Mom didn’t remember wrong! Uncle Jingzhi gets up very early every day!"
The already shy girl felt so mortified upon hearing Zhiyu speak that she wished she could stomp a hole in the ground.
That’s when Nanzhi stopped teasing and pulled her into the house, "Oh my, just don’t stomp my yard gate to pieces now."
"Then, I’m going back home. Sister Nanzhi, you really are mean! Always teasing me!" The young girl fidgeted with the kerchief in her hand, her little mouth pouting high.
"My bad, my bad, go sit in the living room."
Shen Miaomiao then happily walked with Nanzhi and took a seat in the living room.
Seeing that his own mother had a chance, Shen Zhiyu took the opportunity to ask, "Mom, can I go play with Brother Doudou?"
Nanzhi laughed and patted his bottom before nodding in agreement, "You little clever clogs!"
After getting permission from his mother, the little guy quickly picked up a few of his toys and headed out the door with a hug.
Watching Shen Zhiyu’s retreating back, Nanzhi shook her head with a smile and then turned to Shen Miaomiao, "Zhiyu has already left, aren’t you going to tell me what you’ve come for?"
Shen Miaomiao paused in the middle of drinking water, feeling somewhat embarrassed, "I, I didn’t really come for anything."
"Alright, alright, if you’ve got something to ask, just spit it out."
"Right, right, I just wanted to ask about how Twelve behaves on a daily basis." Shen Miaomiao spoke, her handkerchief twisted into a knot in her hands.
Her own mother had said that when it came to living with a man, it wasn’t just the looks that count; you also had to consider whether he was diligent and suitable for daily life.
Otherwise, no matter how good-looking, it would be pointless.
Upon hearing this, Nanzhi began to carefully recall how Twelve had been around the house these last few days. After pondering for a bit, she began to speak, "That kid isn’t half bad, not picky about food, works quickly, and is very diligent. You see the front yard there? It used to have a horse tied up, didn’t it? It was Twelve who tidied it up before they left."
Listening to Nanzhi, Shen Miaomiao also turned to look over there, remembering that the place had been used to tether horses before. Now it looked spotlessly clean, without a single mark left behind.
"Well, does he talk much on a regular basis?"
Nanzhi thought for a moment before shaking her head, "He doesn’t talk much. I haven’t interacted with him much, but he seems quite sharp."
For instance, he would join Eleven in saying good things to Shen Wenchen.
Thinking of Shen Wenchen, a sudden worry crept into Nanzhi’s heart. She still had no idea how they were all doing now.
"I see." Shen Miaomiao pursed her lips, her smile gaining a few more layers of meaning.
After she had finished inquiring what she wanted to know, Nanzhi then asked, "Miaomiao, was that girl from yesterday a relative of yours?"
The young girl was taken aback, then remembering who she was talking about, she shook her head, "No, she said that her family wanted to arrange a marriage for her, but she didn’t want to, so she ran away secretly. Then she twisted her ankle at the entrance of the village and was taken home by Zhao Si. Later we asked that youngster Wang Jingzhi to come have a look, and since she said she knew my mother, we then took her back home."
While speaking, the young girl grimaced, "It’s strange, though, how she knew my mother’s name."
A twitch appeared at the corner of Nanzhi’s mouth.
Guihua was indeed a name you could find in any village. If she wasn’t mistaken, there was a sixty-one-year-old granny at the village entrance also named Guihua.
"Did she not say where she was from?"
Shen Miaomiao thought for a moment, then shook her head, "She didn’t say, but she didn’t seem like a bad person. She even wanted to stay at our place for a while, offering to pay silver."
Nanzhi nodded, only giving a word of caution, "Then you’d better pay more attention in your daily life; if there’s anything odd about her, make sure you tell your mother."
"Eh, I know." The young girl agreed cheerfully, smiling.
Meanwhile, Shen Wenchen and his companions had just settled down to rest.
They hadn’t stopped since leaving Lihua Village yesterday morning.
Eleven collapsed on the ground, gasping for air after dismounting, and called out to Shen Wenchen, "Big Brother Shen, do we have to be in such a hurry?"
Shen Wenchen merely glanced at him, then got lost in thought while fiddling with the wooden hairpin in his hand.
Not getting a response, Eleven didn’t bother to seek further scorn and chose to rest alongside Twelve and the others instead.
"What’s with you, youngster? You’re about to laugh your face off," Eleven was puzzled by the silly grin on Twelve’s face and touched his forehead, letting out a surprised sound.
"You don’t have a fever?"
"Get lost." Twelve swatted his hand away and continued to giggle while fiddling with the purse in his hand.
After being snubbed repeatedly, Eleven shrugged his shoulders. Alright then, it was his own fault for being nosy.
Ada, Number Two, and Old Nine sat together eating. When they saw Eleven, they laughed heartily, "Got rejected, didn’t you? Why bother Big Brother Shen when he’s irritated? Twelve’s thinking about his sweetheart right now! Wouldn’t you just get the cold shoulder if you went over?"
At a loss for words, Eleven just grabbed some dried meat from Ada’s hand and stuffed it into his mouth in frustration.
Munching on the meat, he couldn’t help but glance at the dried meat in his hand—it had to be said, the sister-in-law’s cooking was really top-notch!
