Chapter 95: Chapter 95 Is there another tasker? _1
Aunt Guihua, accompanied by her group, walked home, and Nanzhi sent her two brothers toward the village entrance.
When they met, Nanzhi found it strange to see Aunt Guihua and Shen Miaomiao supporting a girl on each side.
Had a visitor come to Aunt Guihua’s house?
She seemed quite unfamiliar.
"Sister Nanzhi!" Shen Miaomiao called out excitedly upon seeing Nanzhi.
"Eh, Miaomiao, do you have a visitor at your place?" Nanzhi responded and asked about the girl.
"Mhm, Sister Nanzhi, I’ll come to play with you tomorrow," Shen Miaomiao said, without elaborating since they were still outside.
"Alright," Nanzhi replied with a smile, nodding her head, suspecting that the young girl might want to inquire about something from her.
Su Tao, who had seen the Lin brothers from afar, feigned not knowing them. Now hearing the small woman talking with Shen Miaomiao, she turned her head to look their way.
The small woman, who looked about 1.60 meters tall and slim, was pretty and had a gentle voice that felt comforting to hear.
Seeing the cute little radish-head next to her, Su Tao somehow became interested in them.
As the sky darkened, the two families greeted each other and went their separate ways.
"Fatty, let me tell you, be careful with that girl we just met."
After walking a short distance, Lin Yicheng looked back and, seeing that Shen Miaomiao and her group had disappeared, he cautioned.
"Why?"
Nanzhi felt amused at her oldest brother’s mysterious manner.
"That girl they were helping, we almost got swindled by her," Lin Yicheng snorted with a hint of disdain. How could a pretty girl go around cheating people?
"Really?"
Seeing his sister’s surprised face, Lin Ercheng also leaned in to whisper, "Look at that girl’s clothes and her appearance – does she look like a common peasant girl? Right now, everyone’s out of food, and if she’s willingly coming into the village, there must be a problem. Just be careful with Zhiyu, alright?"
"Okay," Nanzhi replied, nodding as both her brothers watched over her. They wouldn’t harm her. She’d have to talk to Miaomiao tomorrow to ensure they weren’t being deceived.
"In a few days, we’ll come back to Lihua Village to check on you and your mother. Be more vigilant, okay?"
As Lin Ercheng spoke, he looked at his nephew holding his hand, "Zhiyu, you’re a man now! You have to protect your mother, understand?"
Shen Zhiyu, being acknowledged by his uncle, nodded seriously, affirming, "Zhiyu is a man now! Zhiyu will protect mother!"
"Hmm, that’s my good nephew!"
After the three men had each shared their thoughts, Nanzhi changed the subject, "Big brother, second brother, make sure you store more food. If the water in the village is indeed insufficient, just come and stay with us directly."
"Okay," they agreed.
As she watched her brothers grow further away, Nanzhi headed back home with Zhiyu.
Lihua Village had found a water source on East Mountain, and everyone had stockpiled food early. Having water and food meant survival was possible. She just hadn’t anticipated Stone Village’s water shortage would be so severe.
Thinking about how the village wells had been dry for days, Nanzhi couldn’t help but worry. Stone Village wasn’t near any river – what would people do for drinking and cooking if the wells really dried up?
Upon returning home, the empty hall and yard felt unspeakably forlorn.
In these two months, she had experienced transmigration, an earthquake, a locust plague...
As bedtime approached, Nanzhi’s mind was still in turmoil.
Shen Zhiyu, however, clung to her and began to sob.
"Mother, does Father not want Zhiyu anymore?"
Even though he seemed not to care during the day, the little one still felt scared at night, as the village children always said he was a child without a father.
He didn’t understand why his father couldn’t be like Brother Doudou’s father, staying at home with him and his mother.
Holding the little one in her arms, Nanzhi only soothed him softly, "Father would never abandon Zhiyu. Father has gone to fight the goblins, just like Sun Wukong. Zhiyu just has to wait well at home, and once Father is done, he will come back to take Zhiyu away."
"Then, what about Mother?" The little one looked up at Nanzhi with eyes that seemed ready to start shedding golden tears at any sign of distress.
The child’s voice was soft and sticky, yet it struck Nanzhi’s heart like a heavy hammer.
"Mother will go too, Mother will not leave Zhiyu behind." Nanzhi said slowly as she touched the little one’s cheek.
If Zhiyu were to leave with Shen Wenchen, she truly would be left all alone.
Mother and son held each other as they slept, yet tears tinged the corners of their eyes.
The River Clam in the backyard had been resting for the past few days and had barely recovered some vitality today. As it opened its shell, it was momentarily stunned.
Why had that woman come here?
By all accounts, she was supposed to appear two years later, wasn’t she?
The more it thought, the more wrong it seemed, and bubbles started bubbling densely around the River Clam’s body.
Suddenly, an invisible protective shield appeared in mid-air, enveloping the entire Lihua Village.
The two old hens at the foot of the wall were originally pecking at the locusts in their trough when they were scared into a frenzy by the commotion, trying to squeeze through the fence to escape. Upon seeing the pair of large hands, they could only puff up their feathers and shiver helplessly.
If only they had known they would experience these events here, they would have tried their hardest to lay eggs, even if they had to eat dirt every day back home!
Su Tao settled down at Aunt Guihua’s house, and just as she was getting ready to sleep in bed, a sudden "drip" sound came to her ears.
She initially thought the system was about to issue a new task, but when there was no response for a long time, Su Tao became uneasy and quickly asked, "System, system, what’s going on?"
Could it be that the system was about to self-destruct?
[Host, abnormal energy fluctuations detected.]
The system, examining the recent scan results, even carried a hint of self-doubt in its mechanical voice.
Before arrival, it had clearly scanned the area and confirmed it was a minor world, with no possibility of other systems intruding.
Yet if it wasn’t the presence of another system, what could explain these energy fluctuations?
"Abnormal energy fluctuations?"
Upon hearing the system’s words, Su Tao felt puzzled, no longer lying in bed. She quickly sat up, wondering if there were other taskers present.
Thinking there could be other transmigrators like herself, Su Tao felt an inexplicable excitement.
At least that would prove she wasn’t alone in this place!
"System, scan again and see if you can locate the position of the energy fluctuations."
Despite its capabilities, the almighty system couldn’t deduce any results, so Su Tao had no choice but to give up.
Since the system could detect it, that meant the tasker was close by. As long as she tried to search, finding that person would just be a matter of time.
With this hope in mind, Su Tao finally lay down contentedly to sleep.
But the River Clam in Nanzhi’s house felt something was off.
What’s so peculiar about this Su Tao?
