Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife
Chapter 81: One Dies, One Goes Mad_1

Chapter 81: Chapter 81: One Dies, One Goes Mad_1

Having ensured the safety of his own home, Shen Wenchen left behind only Shi Tou and Ada to guard it while he, accompanied by three other people, stepped out of the courtyard door.

After a night of fierce struggles, the eerie orange hue gradually faded, and the sky began to show a hint of the light before dawn.

People in the entire village collectively heaved a sigh of relief.

Gazing at the insect corpses all over the ground, Dashan furrowed his brows, making his fingers run over his dry tobacco pipe incessantly. If it wasn’t for his wife’s strict prohibition against smoking, why wouldn’t he have had a few pouches by now?

He had lived for over forty years and experienced locust plagues, but his memory of those locusts was limited to their gnawing grains and at worst, leaves off trees.

How did the locusts of this plague decide to chew even his courtyard doors?

Had it not been for Wenchen’s help last night, perhaps not even a single door panel of his house would have been left intact.

They gnawed even at the wood; originally hoping for a bountiful autumn harvest, Dashan dreaded that after these two rounds, not even a single blade of grass may be left in his fields.

The more he thought about it, the heavier the burden on his shoulders felt.

Before he could even wrap his head around the matter of the locust plague, news came from the Li Family.

Li Tian was dead!

Bitten to death by locusts!

With a case of death on his hands, Dashan hurriedly put on his shoes and rushed to the Li Family’s home along with his two brothers, Shen Qingchuan and Shen Qinghe.

What on earth has been going on these days?

Wenchen had busied himself all night when he returned home, he coincidentally ran into Nanzhi leaving. They both paused slightly, but nobody spoke and Nanzhi, without lifting her head, stepped out of the courtyard.

Watching his wife leave without turning back, Wenchen had an unpleasant feeling in his heart.

However, since he sowed these seeds, even if the fruits were unbearably sour and astringent, he deserved it.

After entering the house, he was just about to wash his face and catch some sleep when he noticed a bowl of hot porridge on the dining table in the hall, which caught him off guard.

Shi Tou and the others had arrived home an hour ago. So, was this bowl of porridge left for him by Nannan?

Beholding that bowl of plain porridge, a sudden feeling of warmth welled up in Wenchen’s heart. It seemed Nannan did care about him after all.

Instantly, the feelings of guilt and remorse within him thickened, he even ate the porridge down to the last bit, ensuring none of it went to waste.

He couldn’t leave even a tiny bit of rice soup that Nannan had prepared for him.

Meanwhile, the Li Family’s house was completely surrounded.

"Sister Nanzhi!"

Miaomiao, initially coming over to gawk at the commotion with her mother, caught sight of Nanzhi outside and eagerly waved her hand.

Hearing someone call her, Nanzhi looked up to see Miaomiao waving at her cheerfully and acknowledged her with a nod and a smile.

Earlier, she had simply thought of Miaomiao as a fun companion around the same age as her, but after realizing she had stepped into a novel, her fondness for Miaomiao increased exponentially!

After all, in the book, Zhiyu was raised after the original owner had starved to death by a young girl named Miaomiao!

"Sister Nanzhi! Did you come to see what’s happening too?" Spotting Nanzhi unable to get through the crowd, Miaomiao fought her way to Nanzhi’s side. She then asked softly, fearful of being overheard by others.

"Yeah, how did you get here so fast?" After all, she lived just a stone’s throw away from the Li Family. It seemed she had been slower to catch the news.

"My mama brought me."

Nanzhi nodded in understanding. Her Aunt Guihua was indeed quick in spreading gossip.

"What’s going on?"

Shen Miaomiao glanced at the crowd before leaning over to whisper in her ear, "I heard Li Tian is dead! And it seems Ms. Wu is involved!"

Nanzhi was stunned. Wasn’t Li Tian supposed to have been killed by locusts?

How is Ms. Wu involved?

Remembering the last time she had seen Ms. Wu, Nanzhi felt confused. Ms. Wu had looked so thin... almost unrecognizable.

The crowd became noisy once again. The gates of the Li Family’s courtyard were thrown open, and many tried to squeeze in. Nanzhi, pulling Shen Miaomiao aside, decided to stay at the edge of the crowd.

They wouldn’t be able to push through the crowd anyway. Better to wait outside for news.

"Sister-in-law! What’s going on?" Eleven and Twelve had been resting at home when they heard the commotion. They emerged to find Nanzhi and a girl standing at the neighbour’s door.

"We’re spectating." Nanzhi turned slightly red when her curiosity was exposed by Shen Wenchen’s brothers, but she tried to maintain her composure and explained.

"Spectating?" At hearing Nanzhi’s words, Eleven’s eyes lit up. He loved a good crowd. "What’s happening?"

Shen Miaomiao looked at Eleven and Twelve with confusion. She didn’t recognize them?

"Miaomiao, this is Eleven, this is Twelve." Nanzhi introduced them to Shen Miaomiao with a smile.

After hearing Nanzhi’s words, Shen Miaomiao relaxed. If Nanzhi knew them, then there was no problem. She smiled and nodded, "My name’s Shen Miaomiao!"

With introductions out of the way, they learned about the spectacle. Eleven seemed particularly excited and said he’d be back in fifteen minutes with the news.

He left before Nanzhi could respond, disappearing into the crowd.

That left Twelve, Nanzhi, and Shen Miaomiao standing together.

Just as things were turning awkward, Aunt Guihua came pushing through the crowd.

"You silly girl, how’d you get lost in the crowd?" Aunt Guihua pretended to scold Shen Miaomiao before turning to Nanzhi. "What are you doing outside? Didn’t you go watch the spectacle?"

"I couldn’t get in." Nanzhi said, a tad embarrassed.

"No worries, I have the gist of it. What do you want to know?" Aunt Guihua replied. Then, noticing Twelve, she paused.

Whose child was this handsome boy?

Shen Miaomiao, aware of what her mother was thinking, tugged on her sleeve and asked, "Mother, what happened inside?"

With that, Aunt Guihua shook off her thoughts and began to relay what she had seen.

Li Tian was indeed dead, and his body was horribly mutilated. His bloodstains dyed the white cloth covering him red!

Ms. Wu seemed to have lost her mind. Li Zheng tried to talk to her, but she was inconsolable, shaking her head and repeating ’don’t hit me’, all the while holding a wooden doll and alternating between crying and laughing.

Shi Tou was nowhere to be seen. When Li Liang of the second house was asked, he said that when the locusts arrived, they had all hidden inside their rooms and dared not come out. However, the main house seemed unusually quiet last night.

It wasn’t until the next morning, when Li Liang saw Ms. Wu crying in the yard holding that wooden doll, that he went to check the main house. There, he found Li Tian grotesquely mutilated at the entrance, the doors and windows chewed beyond recognition.

Shi Tou was missing and a village doctor was immediately called. However, the doctor could only shake his head, announcing that Li Tian had died last night!

Ms. Wu, shocked by the events, had become an imbecile!

Listening to Aunt Guihua’s account, Nanzhi was taken aback. How had the Li family lost one member and had another go mad in just one night?
