Becoming the Villain's Discarded Wife
Chapter 80 Locust Plague 5

Chapter 80: Chapter 80 Locust Plague 5

Shen Wenchen’s voice faded away.

The atmosphere between the two of them turned cold again.

Zhiyu was the tie that bound them together. Perhaps Nanzhi could disregard him, but she could not possibly disregard Zhiyu.

In the silence, looking at Nanzhi’s tear-stained face, Shen Wenchen felt a twinge of pain in his heart, thinking of the mistake he had made, he was somewhat torn.

To speak, Nannan would surely despise him, to stay silent, he would never be at peace in this life.

"Nannan, I made a mistake."

Listening to his words, Nanzhi could probably guess what he was about to say—that for the sake of that goddess, he had written a divorce letter to the original wife.

"I... I wrote a divorce letter in my last life." Shen Wenchen’s voice was hoarse, wishing he could bury his head in the ground.

He truly did not understand how he had been as if bewitched in his past life.

Nanzhi showed no reaction; she was already aware of this matter. Even though she had speculated that Shen Wenchen would do this, and that it must be somehow connected to the heroine’s system, she still couldn’t utter the words "It doesn’t matter."

No one could replace the suffering the original wife had endured.

"Nannan, I..."

Before Shen Wenchen could finish speaking, the door was pushed open.

"Daddy, Mommy, what are you doing?"

Shen Zhiyu pouted, his little face was filled with discontent.

Just now Daddy said to go look at the fish in the backyard, and that he would come in a moment, but he had waited in the backyard for a long time and Daddy did not show up!

Daddy lied!

"What’s wrong, Zhiyu?" Nanzhi wiped her face before rising to embrace the little one.

"Daddy lied! He didn’t come to see the fish with me!"

Faced with the little one’s accusation, Shen Wenchen hung his head and said nothing.

"Then Mommy will take you to see the fish." Nanzhi didn’t bother with Shen Wenchen and carried her son out of the room.

Seeing Nanzhi carrying Shen Zhiyu out of the room, the several men in the main hall exchanged silent glances.

They had initially wanted to stop the little one, but he had just stared at them with wide eyes and before they could react, he had pushed the door open and gone inside.

Now, seeing their sister-in-law carrying the boy out, they silently sighed. Brother Shen had failed to appease him again.

Even though they were sworn brothers with Shen Wenchen, they thought, who could easily forgive a husband who hadn’t returned for three years?

They couldn’t say much about this matter either.

Shen Wenchen was very dispirited the entire afternoon, showing little energy even when Shen Zhiyu spoke to him.

Initially, he thought that after telling Nannan about his past, she would react in some way.

Even if she were to lash out at him, he could accept it, but since she had left with Zhiyu, there had been no response.

Could it be that she was truly profoundly disappointed in him?

Thinking thus, Shen Wenchen felt as if his soul had been drained from him.

Soon after they finished dinner, in less than a quarter of an hour, the entire sky was once again stained with orange-red as a huge swarm of locusts gathered from all directions.

Descending on every household in Lihua Village, they began to gnaw and nibble, leaving the already scant crops in the fields and the branches along the roads completely bare.

From their experience in the early hours of today, the villagers were all prepared, having weapons ready at home.

Locust plagues were never a matter that could be resolved in one day, or a few days.

For a moment, Lihua Village’s skies were darkened with locusts, and on the ground, people brandished torches.

Yet, the locusts seemed to be possessed with a determination to die, for even when people held up torches, they dived in, gnawing not only at people’s flesh but also not sparing the gates and roof eaves.

The burning torches dispersed the locusts, and suddenly, a strange scent of char filled various parts of the village.

Nanzhi locked Zhiyu in the room and stood in front of the main hall with a few others, torch in hand. She found the smell wafting in the air strangely familiar.

It was quite similar to the grilled locusts sold at the food stall where she used to work part-time.

As she pondered, Shi’er had already picked up a roasted locust and sniffed it. "These locusts are odd, they smell really good once grilled! Just don’t know if they’re edible?"

Shen Wenchen’s eyes darkened, and he cast a glance at him before speaking in a cold voice, "They can’t be eaten."

Hearing this, Nanzhi turned to look at him. Shen Wenchen seemed so certain, could it be that he had eaten them before?

However, Shen Wenchen said nothing more but focused on handling the locusts that flew into the courtyard.

Observing the locusts that entered the yard, Nanzhi was slightly stunned.

She looked up at the swarm above her, feeling as if the locusts somehow had thoughts of their own.

Before they descended, they would hesitate as if deciding whether to swoop down.

As if to prove her point, a few locusts circled around one another as if making up their minds before launching themselves toward Nanzhi.

Shen Wenchen, standing to the side, had a sharp look in his eyes. He swiped his hand to deal with them and casually returned to his previous spot.

Nanzhi didn’t say thank you, merely holding her torch and preparing to head to the backyard.

"Sister-in-law, where are you going?"

Shiyi noticed Nanzhi leaving and sensing that there must be something amiss between big brother Shen and the sister-in-law, hurriedly spoke out.

He swiftly turned to look at Shen Wenchen with an anxious gaze. Why is big brother Shen just standing there like a block of wood, not following her?

"I’m going to check the backyard," Nanzhi said with a smile before stepping into the backyard.

"Big Brother Shen!" Shiyi called out softly, watching Shen Wenchen unmoving, "Hurry up and follow!"

Little did he know, Shen Wenchen, without even turning his head, said, "Shi’er, Laojiu, go watch the backyard."

Shi’er and Laojiu nodded and quickly went to the backyard.

Nanzhi arrived in the backyard and saw the sparse locust carcasses on the ground, not immediately understanding what was happening.

What’s going on?

The two hens cowering at the corner of the wall clucked twice before huddling up again, trembling and puffing up their feathers.

Nanzhi incredulously looked up at the sky, only to see a mass of the black swarm parting over her family’s backyard, exposing a swath of orange-red sky.

Occasionally, one or two locusts would fall, as if they were hit by some force in mid-air, leaving only their broken bodies in the yard.

"Sister-in-law!" Shi’er and Laojiu arrived, calling out in unison.

"What, what’s going on here?"

Both men were also stunned by the sight before them.

Why is there such a big difference between the front and back yards?

"I’m fine, let’s go, back to the front yard."

Nanzhi shook her head and, holding her torch, walked toward the front yard.

The two men were taken aback before nodding and following her.

The situation in the front yard also changed suddenly. Shen Wenchen, already in a dismal mood, incinerated the falling locusts so thoroughly that some were left without a trace.

Soon, Shen Wenchen also noticed something was amiss. The locusts in the sky were still thick as clouds, but no more insects came down.

The River Clam in the backyard suddenly opened its shell, looking up at the swarm as if it wished it could swear at them.

What the hell!

The little bit of good fortune it had managed to accumulate!

And it was all squandered away by these damn insects!
