Chapter 67: Chapter 67 Variables

Nanzhi and Shen Zhiyu were both awoken by the heat the next morning.

"Mother, it’s so hot." Shen Zhiyu rubbed his eyes, sweat covering his forehead and neck.

Looking at the dark sky outside the window, Nanzhi found it strange.

How could it be so hot today?

They weren’t the only ones woken by the heat. The other villagers of Lihua village were too.

Mrs. Liu wiped the sweat off her forehead, looking at Shen Dazhu, "My dear, what’s going on? Why is it so hot this morning?"

Shen Dazhu was sweating too, he looked outside the window, the sky was still dark with no signs of dawn breaking.

"It’s just past midnight, why is it so hot?" Wiping the sweat off his neck, Shen Dazhu got up from the bed.

"Where are you going?" Mrs. Liu asked, frowning as she watched her husband get off the bed.

"I’m going to check outside, it’s so hot. Want to take a bath? I’ll fetch some water for you!"

Mrs. Liu wiped away the sweat trickling down to her eyes, feeling puzzled. What on earth was happening?

Nanzhi went to the backyard, her back already soaked. She needed to get a basin of water back to the house so she could wipe off the sweat on Shen Zhiyu’s body.

The well water was still cool, Nanzhi drew some and brought it back to the room.

After wiping Shen Zhiyu and herself, she left the basin by the window and continued to fan him to sleep.

The River Clam under the eaves of the backyard hut was perplexed.

Why is it so hot?

Even though it was completely submerged in water, it felt like it was being boiled alive.

Looking up at the sky, the River Clam’s heart sank.

Given its current situation, all it could do was to close its shell tightly and pray that Nanzhi would remember to tend to it in the morning.

Nanzhi didn’t sleep well that night. When she was awakened, it was only a little past the hour of the tiger.

She had barely slept for an hour.

Panting, Nanzhi tried to slow her heart rate. She had a vivid dream in that hour, with a dark and ominous force pressing down from the sky.

That was all she dreamed about, trying to recall more made her head hurt.

She thought of washing her face to clear her head, but when she lifted the basin by the window, Nanzhi paused.

She remembered drawing half a basin of water last night, why did it feel lighter now?

Using the dim light from the window, she looked into the basin. There was barely any water left at the bottom of it.

An alarming thought arose. Nanzhi hurried to the backyard.

First, she lifted the wooden board on the ranch, noting a significant reduction of water. The river shrimp in the jug were all crammed together at the water surface, as if the heat was scalding them.

Seeing this, Nanzhi felt a chill. Turning around, she went to check the well. With the dim light, it was hard to see the water level inside.

She threw a bucket down and listened. It seemed that the water level hadn’t changed much. Only then did she breathe a sigh of relief.

As long as the well was not drying up, she would not die from thirst.

She fetched a bucket of water, and just when she was about to add some to the basin for the River Clam, she heard a knocking sound from outside their house.

Nanzhi paused her actions, placed the bucket down, washed her hands, and hurried to the front yard to open the gate.

The River Clam in the basin was quite dismayed. Who was this annoying visitor outside?

Nanzhi opened the gate, and there stood Shen Yuntian and Doudou, one big, one small.

"Sister-in-law." Shen Yuntian had his outer garment tied around his waist due to the heat, his inner clothing was soaked with sweat, making him look like he had just stumbled out of the water.

"Yun Tian? What brings you..." Nanzhi was all question marks. Why was Shen Yuntian bringing Doudou to knock on her door so early in the morning?

"We caught some game last night, my mother told me to bring some over to you."

Saying that, Shen Yuntian lifted up the near-death wild chicken in his hand.

"No, no need, you keep it." Seeing the wild chicken, Nanzhi waved her hands anxiously. She had only given them a bowl of rabbit meat yesterday, how could she possibly accept a whole wild chicken in return?

"Sister-in-law, please take it." Shen Yuntian scratched his head, pushing the chicken towards Nanzhi.

Doudou, standing to one side, also nodded his head, "Auntie Lin, please take it! Otherwise, grandma won’t let me and Little Shi’er go home!"

Regardless of Doudou’s pleas, Nanzhi closed the gate, saying, "I can’t accept this, Yun Tian, take Doudou back home!"

The two figures outside the gate exchanged glances, then simultaneously looked at the wild chicken in their hands.

"Little Uncle, what should we do?" Doudou looked at his little uncle, worried. His grandmother had instructed them to deliver a wild chicken to Auntie Lin, if they didn’t deliver it, they wouldn’t be allowed to go home!

Looking at the tightly closed gate, Shen Yuntian was also at a loss. What should he do if he couldn’t deliver it?

He couldn’t possibly just toss it in, could he?

If he brought it back home, cleaned it and let Doudou deliver it directly to Zhiyu, it should work.

With this in mind, Shen Yuntian returned home with his nephew.

This day was truly strange, it was so hot so early in the morning.

After shutting the gate, Nanzhi went back to the backyard to change the water for the River Clam and gather the dried chestnut flour she had left out from the day before.

Feeling hot, she thought of heading to East Mountain to cool off. Thinking of the cool aura from the mountain yesterday, Nanzhi had a glimmer of hope.

The six people resting in Qingyun county were not feeling well.

Fearing the horses would get hot, they had traveled overnight, but who would have thought they would be awoken by the heat after finding an inn to sleep at?

"Shen, why is your hometown so hot?" Eleven asked Shen Wenchen, who sat by the window.

The person being asked was just as clueless. He remembered that the disaster had yet to happen, why did it occur nearly half a month early?

"Nine, aren’t you hot?" Eleven looked at Nine lying nonchalantly on the cool floor after Shen Wenchen ignored him. How was it that Eleven was sweating while Nine had no reaction at all?

"Calm your mind, it will naturally cool off." Nine glanced at Eleven who couldn’t stop complaining. He wore thick clothing, so no wonder he was hot.

"Shen, how long until we reach your hometown?" Little Shier was vigorously fanning himself, seeming somewhat disheartened.

He had grown up in the north and had never experienced such a torrid climate.

It was just past the tiger hour, judging by the current temperature, wouldn’t they be baked into dried meat by the time noon arrived?

"If we leave now, we should arrive by the afternoon." Looking down to see the local vendors had begun to peddle their goods, Shen Wenchen’s grip on his hand tightened.

Everywhere he looked in Qingyun County, there were traces of recent renovation. When he entered the inn, he had deliberately asked the waiter, who had only mentioned a recent earthquake that caused property damage.

But he clearly remembered that there wasn’t such an episode in his previous life...

If there were changes in everything, then how was the three-odd-year-old Gougou doing now?

Could it be...
