Chapter 48: Chapter 48 Wild Giant Turtle_1
Nanzhi took a moment on the ground, feeling a cold sweat cover her whole body; she was genuinely afraid of such creatures as turtle kings.
Upon sighting them her legs would become disobedient.
"Don’t be afraid, Mum, the big turtle king has run away." Gougou, seeing Nanzhi covered in sweat, wanted to wipe it off with a handkerchief, but being a little boy, he didn’t have one. He could only fan her with his small hand.
"Thank you, Gougou." With newfound nerves, Nanzhi saw more than just a pet in Gougou. She perceived a layer of ’savior’ halo around him.
Gougou’s face turned red as a beetroot when stared at by his owner, and even his little ears became pink.
"Gougou, Gougou protects, protects Mum."
Nanzhi nodded vigorously and praised, "Gougou is a little man!"
Already shy, Gougou became dizzy on hearing the words ’little man’. He clenched his little fists and said, "Mum, don’t be afraid, Gougou is a man now! A man like Uncle Two!"
After another pause on the ground, Nanzhi got up with a bucket in hand and led Gougou home.
"Nanzhi, darling, are you already heading home this early?" Aunt Guihua called out as she saw Nanzhi and Gougou walking home.
Miaomiao initially didn’t want to step outside. However, her mom ended up dragging her out to catch fish. On hearing her mum’s words, she immediately raised her drooping head.
"Sister Nanzhi!"
"Ah, so Aunt Guihua brought Miaomiao out to catch fish in the river? My two brothers came to help me repair the house, so I need to get home early." Nanzhi asked with a smile, also sharing some with Shen Miaomiao.
"Ah, yes, you go and attend to your business." Aunt Guihua responded with a smile. Seeing that Nanzhi had guests at her house, she didn’t hold her back for a chat.
After bidding goodbye, Nanzhi continued home with Gougou.
Miaomiao was scolded by Aunt Guihua: "Just look at Nanzhi, up at dawn and back after dark every day. Then look at yourself. How are you going to get married being so slothful?"
Miaomiao could only stick out her tongue as she meekly listened to the scolding. She was sure she wouldn’t become unmarriageable.
Once Nanzhi got home and saw the pile of wooden planks and tiles in the courtyard, she was taken aback before realizing it was her brothers’ handiwork.
"You came back so soon?" Lin Ercheng had just had a drink of water when he spotted his younger sister and nephew coming back.
"Ah."
Nanzhi merely nodded and headed to the backyard with her bucket. She dumped the river prawns from the bucket into the water tank, washed her hands, and returned to the front yard.
"Pangya, have a look and tell us if this is alright." Lin Yicheng pointed to the eaves of the house after spotting Nanzhi.
They had just unloaded a section of tiles and replaced some from the storage room. Now, it was starting to look like a reburbished roof.
"Sure." Nanzhi nodded after assessing her brothers’ work.
Although her house was just a few years old, she told the outside world that the roof had collapsed due to an earthworm attack, and her brothers came to help re-roof it.
"It seems like you’re running low on firewood in the house. Do you want us to go chop some for you?"
Lin Ercheng looked around his sister’s yard but couldn’t find anything else for them to help with.
"Would that be convenient?" Nanzhi scratched her head. Lately, she’d been burning firewood picked up haphazardly, sometimes even sticks found on the road after a fishing trip. She didn’t have sturdy firewood at home capable of sustaining fire.
"There’s nothing inconvenient about it." Lin Ercheng waved his hand, picking up an axe and motioning for his older brother to join him outside.
Lin Yicheng picked up a few ropes and two carrying poles before following his younger brother out.
"Mum, where are my uncles going?" Gougou asked, tugging at Nanzhi’s skirt.
"Your uncles are going to chop some firewood for our home."
"Gougou can also gather firewood," Shi Tou said, pointing to the two branches he had just picked up on his way back with Nanzhi.
But the river outside the village seemed lively.
As soon as Lin Yicheng and Lin Ercheng reached the village entrance, they saw many people standing in the river.
"What are they doing?" Lin Yicheng stared at the people, puzzled. Why were all these people not building their houses but standing in the river?
"They must be fishing," Lin Ercheng took a glance at those people, also feeling perplexed.
"Can they really catch fish by just standing there like that?" scoffed Lin Yicheng.
The two brothers didn’t gawk any longer and continued towards the mountain with their farming tools.
"Hey, look there, who do those two men belong to? I don’t remember seeing them," a woman spotted the two unfamiliar brothers from the Lin family and turned to ask.
"Where?" Another woman followed her finger and indeed found them unfamiliar.
"That’s the Lin girl’s two brothers," Aunt Guihua smirked and went on, "The two brothers specially came to help the Lin girl repair her house today. This is what real brothers are."
The people around also felt a tinge of envy after hearing this. Many girls severed their connections with their parents’ family after getting married. But the Lin’s still had two real brothers to help them. Comparing with their own homes, who wouldn’t be envious?
"Mum, are there really turtles in this river?" Shen Miaomiao looked down at the river, puzzled.
And what’s so good about these turtles? Everyone’s here.
"Yes, didn’t your fifth aunt tell you? She saw them this morning."
Shen Miaomiao pouted. She had felt around in the river for the River Clams before. And besides, the villagers had flipped this part of the river upside down by then. There was no way there could be any turtles. If there were any, they’d have to be upstream, she thought.
After wasting half a day and only finding a few fist-sized River Clams, someone suggested looking upstream.
That suggestion led everyone upstream, after all, the nourishing turtles certainly were worth more than mere clams and fish.
Even if they didn’t eat it themselves, selling it in town would certainly bring in a lot of money.
"There’s one over there!"
Everyone was buried headfirst searching, and suddenly someone broke the silence. Everyone raced toward that direction.
Mrs. Liu also brought her two daughters-in-law to join in the excitement, but when they saw the commotion, they quickly fled to shore.
"Never mind, let’s not compete with them. It’s not worth getting hurt over a turtle we might not even catch."
Aunt Guihua also feared for her daughter Shen Miaomiao in the crowd. So she stayed behind, only occasionally catching fish and scooping up River Clams. When she saw Mrs. Liu and her daughters-in-law standing on the shore, she softly called, "Sister Liu."
Understanding Aunt Guihua’s intention, Mrs. Liu, along with her two daughters-in-law, decided to follow suit and left the river.
Another hour passed, and the group in front still hadn’t caught any turtles, while their fish baskets were full.
Lin Yicheng, and Lin Ercheng, each carrying two bundles of firewood, found it strange to see that the group who had been at the tail end of the village was now almost upon them. Could there be something good in this river?
"Big brother, do you see a turtle over there?" Lin Ercheng was originally planning to wash his face in the river, but then he saw a big turtle lying on a rock.
"Where?" Lin Yicheng blinked his eyes after hearing his younger brother’s words. Upon confirming that it was indeed a large turtle, he also went down to the river.
A turtle was a real delicacy.
And that turtle seemed somewhat silly, it didn’t even react when the two of them surrounded it.
Lin Yicheng was quick, grabbing it and throwing it onto the shore. The two brothers quickly rushed up, tied it with a thin hemp rope, hung it on their carrying pole and headed for their sister’s house.
