Chapter 42: Chapter 42_1

"Gougou, be good, mom is wet, stand a bit further away."

Nanzhi quietly spoke to teary-eyed Gougou.

"Mom, can we go home?" Gougou’s voice had a whining tone as he looked at Nanzhi’s weak state.

"Alright, we will go home." Nanzhi managed a smile, leaning on her face. Her clothes, drenched and clinging to her skin, felt uncomfortable. Despite eating well for half a month, her body remained pathetically thin. Even a small amount of exertion made her feel as if she had been drained.

Hearing Nanzhi’s words, Gougou nodded and trotted down to the river to pick up the bamboo basket.

"Sister Nanzhi, let me assist you." Ms. Sun, looking at Nanzhi’s weak and thin figure, was worried she might collapse halfway.

Nanzhi shook her head, wiped her face with her hand, and tucked her disheveled hair behind her ears. "I’m alright, I can walk by myself. Thanks again, Sister Sun."

Ms. Sun waved her hand, she did nothing more than lend a hand, how could that compare to the exhaustion of Nanzhi saving that person’s life?

"Mom, I brought back the bamboo basket." Gougou held the basket tightly with his small hands. As if remembering something, he ran to the riverside, struggling to put on his shoes and socks before running over again.

Looking at the obedient and clever Gougou, Nanzhi felt comforted, even forgettting the discomfort of the wet clothes sticking to her body.

After thanking Ms. Sun, Nanzhi walked home with Gougou.

On their way home, they ran into Aunt Guihua. Seeing Nanzhi’s miserable state, Aunt Guihua gasped lightly, before asking, "Girl, did you fall in the water?"

"Mom didn’t fall." Gougou responded.

Aunt Guihua, observing Gougou’s sullen face, couldn’t help teasing him, "Oh my, then why is your mom all wet? Did disobedient Gougou run into the river and mom had to save you?"

"It wasn’t Gougou, it was Brother Shi Tou! Brother Shi Tou was the naughty one! He’s annoying!" Gougou scowled, blaming Brother Shi Tou for all of this. If Brother Shi Tou had stayed on the shore and played with him, he wouldn’t have fallen into the water. The situation wouldn’t have been this exhausting if mom didn’t have to save him.

Aunt Guihua looked at the unhappy Gougou and the helplessly smiling Nanzhi. After a long pause, she finally realized, "Nanzhi, was it Shi Tou who fell into the water? What happened?"

"It’s not a big deal. A Diniu (earthworm) turned over and made a deep pit in the riverbed. Shi Tou slipped and got submerged."

"Go home quickly and change your clothes. Wearing these wet clothes isn’t good for your health." Upon hearing the reason, Aunt Guihua didn’t prolong the conversation and urged her to go home to change.

She was also hurrying to the village doctor’s house because she heard a child had fallen into the water.

Watching Nanzhi’s slender figure leading Gougou, walking slowly, Aunt Guihua suddenly felt a pang of envy.

After watching them for a moment, she shook her head and continued on her way to the village doctor’s house. No matter what, she’d gossip after watching the excitement.

"Mom, go and change your clothes quickly, I will pour the bugs into the barrel." Gougou urged, watching as his mom was still dripping with water.

"Eh, alright." Seeing Gougou’s concerned face, Nanzhi wanted to laugh, but held it back, only nodding seriously in agreement.

Seeing that his mom obediently returned to the room to change, Gougou, mimicking her usual satisfied gesture, nodded before carrying the bamboo basket to the backyard.

As he was about to pour the river prawns into the barrel, he found two Crucian Carps in it. Gougou hesitated, afraid that the bugs would be eaten by the fish.

Looking around, his eyes fell on the wooden basin under the eaves. Recalling how Miss River Clam ignored him last night, he snorted in displeasure.

She hurriedly ran over and poured all the river shrimp from the bamboo basket into the water.

The river shrimp, which had been out of the water for a long time, immediately became excited upon touching the water. They scatter and run in all directions, with some even hiding directly under the river clam’s shell.

"Hmph, Gougou ignores you now."

Gougou, looking at the river clam that had clamped its shell shut, stomped her little foot and declared as if she was taking an oath, before running off.

The river clam, upon seeing Gougou’s action, felt somewhat exhausted. It wasn’t that it didn’t want to talk, it was simply too afraid to converse. If that woman found out, it might be branded as a demon and couldn’t run away from the label.

Once Nanzhi changed her clothes, she followed everyone to the backyard. Seeing the densely packed river shrimp in the wooden bucket made her beam with delight. She reached in and grabbed one for a closer look, the more she looked at it, the more appetizing it appeared. She couldn’t wait to immediately stir-fry it in a wok.

As she was contemplating the restless river shrimp in her hand and was about to go to find Gougou, her attention was caught by a white pearl.

Even though she had some guesses, she still found it hard to believe. Only when she picked it up did she realize it was indeed a pearl, even larger and more rounded than the five that Gougou had found last time.

"Could you really be a demon?" Nanzhi looked at the river clam, which was as large as a face basin, and was somewhat dumbfounded. Even though she knew river clams could produce pearls, she had never heard of one producing six high-quality pearls on its own.

The river clam, seeing her face getting closer, gave a start and subconsciously clamped its shell even tighter, apprehensive that Nanzhi might crack it open to search for pearls with just a swift move.

Nanzhi looked at the completely motionless river clam and blinked in confusion, "Could you be Miss River Clam?"

Upon recalling the story of Miss Snail her grandmother once told her, she suddenly got an idea, "Could you prepare four dishes and a soup tonight? Especially if you could include crayfish, that would be great."

While thinking, Nanzhi swallowed, staring at the river clam for a while before shaking her head and walking away. It must be because of her recent act of rescuing people, that she had such ludicrous thoughts.

The river clam silently watched Nanzhi’s retreating figure and pondered. Should it learn how to cook? Perhaps its cooking skills could save its life if it could no longer maintain its disguise.

The sun was now at its zenith, and after standing in the courtyard for less than two minutes, Nanzhi felt her neck already glistening with sweat. Feeling the heat of the sun directly on her forehead made her somewhat apprehensive.

Logically speaking, although this was a fantasy world, there should be no modern pollution and high carbon emissions, thus global warming shouldn’t be happening. Even if there was a drought, it should not be this hot.

The external temperature was likely not less than 34 degrees celsius. Unfortunately, there were no t-shirts or shorts here. Every day, people had to wear inner clothes topped with short blouses and leg wraps.

After waiting for another two minutes, unable to bear the sweltering heat outside, Nanzhi could only signal Gougou to get inside the house with her.

Seeing Gougou’s little face flushed red, but without showing any signs of discomfort, Nanzhi couldn’t help but feel curious. Could it be that children don’t feel the heat?

"Gougou, are you hot?"

Gougou looked at Nanzhi blankly, nodded her head, then shook it. After some thought, she said, "I was hot, then I took off my clothes, and I wasn’t hot anymore."

Nanzhi was taken aback and didn’t inquire further. Felt hot, took off clothes, she was not as smart as Gougou. After all, she was at home, what was there to be shy about?

With that thought, Nanzhi also took off her blouse, let down her hair, and allowed it to dry naturally.

Since there were so many river shrimp in the river, it would be a shame not to catch more. She recalled the videos she had seen before and dumped the river clams from the fish basket into a wooden barrel while contemplating on how to set up a trap allowing the river shrimp to only enter but not leave.

Eventually, after messing around for half an hour, she managed to construct a simple shrimp cage.
