Chapter 41: 41_1

Just as she was wondering whether Shi Tou had gone back while she was catching river prawns, she heard Ms. Sun calling out from not far away.

"Nanzhi! Quick, save him! Shi Tou...Shi Tou’s drowning!"

Nanzhi was a bit stunned by Ms. Sun’s words, which hit her like a bolt from the blue. Shi Tou, was he, drowning?

The water level of the river couldn’t possibly be high enough to drown a person.

She was only stunned for a moment before immediately stepping towards Shi Tou’s direction, and as a result, she slipped after only a couple of steps and found a deep pit at that location where even an adult like her couldn’t stand steady.

In the end, she had to hold her breath and dip her head into the water, straining her eyes to search for Shi Tou.

Several people from the Sun family saw that even Nanzhi was submerged. They naturally knew there was a deep pit in the middle of the river, and they hurriedly stood downriver. If the child was swept down, they could catch him. They saw Ms. Wu still sleeping against a log and felt a fire burning in their hearts.

Ms. Sun picked up a stone and threw it at her.

Ms. Wu was deep in sleep when she suddenly felt a pain on her head. When she woke up, she felt throbbing pain on her forehead. When she was about to swear, she didn’t see her son’s figure in the river.

"Shi Tou? Shi Tou!" Ms. Wu called out twice, feeling somewhat annoyed. Could it be that the damned kid went back home without letting her know?

Ingrate!

"Your son Shi Tou is drowning! Go find help now!"

Ms. Sun was furious seeing that Ms. Wu was acting so lazily. Everyone was thinking about how to help when her son was drowning, and she as a mother was still sleeping comfortably.

"What?" Upon hearing that Shi Tou was drowning, Ms. Wu panicked. Shi Tou was the Li family’s only boy. If anything happened to him, she would certainly be divorced. She ran towards the village while calling for help.

Nanzhi had been searching in the pit for quite a while without any sign of Shi Tou, and in the end, she vaguely saw a shadow being carried downstream by the current.

She immediately began swimming towards the shadow.

As she got close to it, Nanzhi reached out and pulled up the black shadow.

Holding an unconscious Shi Tou in her arms, Nanzhi heaved a sigh of relief, and then she quickly swam towards the shore using her remaining strength. Once she felt something solid under her feet, she quickly lifted Shi Tou’s face out of the water.

"Sister Sun, I got Shi Tou!"

When the people from the Sun family saw Nanzhi with Shi Tou out of the water, they swiftly went up against the current, took the unconscious Shi Tou, and then Nanzhi felt as if her energy had been sapped.

She hadn’t expected there to be a deep pit in the middle of the river. Was it formed during an earthquake?

Even an adult like her would have been submerged by the water in there. How could Shi Tou have ended up there?

This event served as a wake-up call for her. She needed to be more vigilant about Gougou’s safety in the future.

"My son!"

Ms. Wu had come back by rolling and crawling to fetch people, and once they arrived, they saw Shi Tou lying unconscious on the ground. Ms. Wu immediately started wailing.

"Quickly lift Shi Tou up and pat his back, he’ll be fine once he spits out the water!"

A man looked at Shi Tou’s pale face and quickly urged.

Another man heard, and immediately lifted Shi Tou to pat his back, but Shi Tou didn’t respond even after a while.

Ms. Wu’s face turned completely white. Looking at Shi Tou’s condition, she could only regret. Why did she bring Shi Tou to the river! Why did she feel the need to compete with Ms. Lin!

"My Shi Tou! Please wake up! Without you, how can your mother live!"

No matter how much Ms. Wu cried and screamed, no one comforted her. They all were thinking about how to make Shi Tou spit out the water he swallowed.

When Nanzhi got on the shore and saw that Shi Tou still had no reaction,

In haste, she pushed away Ms. Wu, who had gone limp on the ground.

"Quick, lay Shi Tou down on the ground!"

Upon seeing Nanzhi’s drenched figure, the man understood that she was the one who had just saved the child. He quickly obliged, gently placing Shi Tou onto the ground.

"You vile wretch! What are you trying to do?! Are you plotting my son’s death?! You heartless creature, were you the one who pushed my Shi Tou into the water?!"

Seeing Nanzhi ordering someone to lay her son on the ground, Ms. Wu’s eyes reddened with anger. She lunged to grab at Nanzhi, convinced that Nanzhi wanted her son to die. But she was met with a fierce glare from Nanzhi.

"If you want your Shi Tou to live, then shut up!"

Ms. Wu shrank back instantly, not daring to move forward anymore. She simply collapsed on the spot, continuing to wail.

"Nanzhi, what do we do next?" Ms. Sun also deemed Ms. Wu to be unreasonable, blaming Nanzhi instead of concentrating on saving her own son in such a crucial moment.

Nanzhi glanced at Shi Tou, lying silent on the ground, and started to remember the emergency first aid methods she had learned for drowning victims: "Open his mouth and check if there is anything obstructing inside."

Upon hearing Nanzhi’s instructions, the man carefully did as told and found a piece of weed lodged in Shi Tou’s mouth.

"It’s out now, what’s next?"

"Brother Zhuzi, it’s going to be a bit tough on you," Nanzhi said, looking at the man.

"It’s okay, just tell me what to do next quickly." Zhuzi, looking at Shi Tou, spoke out. There was no hardship in this for him, as long as Shi Tou could be saved, that would be the greatest thing.

"Brother Zhuzi, you keep Shi Tou’s head straight, cover his mouth, and breathe into it. Give him a breath and then rest for a while."

Upon hearing this, although Zhuzi looked puzzled, he followed Nanzhi’s instructions and gave Shi Tou breath-by-breath resuscitation. After roughly five to six resuscitations, Nanzhi finally asked him to stop.

"Now, Brother Zhuzi, put your hand on Shi Tou’s chest and press down hard. After thirty compressions, blow air into his mouth twice and repeat until Shi Tou reacts."

"Alright." Zhuzi did not ask further questions, just following Nanzhi’s instructions to the letter. After performing thirty chest compressions and giving Shi Tou two rescue breaths three times, everyone watched as Shi Tou remained motionless. They all feared that Shi Tou was beyond saving.

Just when they began to feel regret, they saw Shi Tou’s throat twitch. He spit out the water lodged in his throat with a loud retch and then began to sob loudly.

"He’s alive! Shi Tou’s alive!"

A few excited cries came from Ms. Sun’s group. Ms. Wu’s face was tear-streaked, and hearing the cry of her own son finally brought her back from her daze. She crawled over in haste and embraced Shi Tou with wrenching sobs.

"Shi Tou, my Shi Tou!"

"Quickly, take Shi Tou to the village doctor." Zhuzi, seeing Shi Tou tightly held by Ms. Wu, spoke out. He was fully aware of how strong he had pressed down during the resuscitation. He didn’t want Shi Tou to suffer any internal injuries.

Though the boy was awake now, they didn’t know whether he could have any lingering problems. That is something only a doctor could tell.

"Oh, oh..."

Giving her assent, Ms. Wu quickly attempted to pick up Shi Tou to rush him to the village doctor’s house. However, her strength was drained from crying so much, and she could not lift him up no matter how hard she tried. It was only when a man saw this and felt pity for her, that he relieved her of Shi Tou and sprinted towards the village doctor’s house.

The women also followed suit, leaving only Nanzhi and Ms. Sun behind.

"Nanzhi, you should rest a bit." Seeing that Nanzhi looked pale, Ms. Sun realized she must be exhausted and helped her sit down on a rock.

"Thank you, Sister Sun. " Nanzhi felt completely drained. She was not exactly good at swimming; managing to stay afloat in the water could be considered a precarious achievement on her part. She wondered if she would have sank under the water if Shi Tou had been conscious enough to struggle.

Fortunately, Shi Tou was alright now.

"Mama, Mama." Gougou had been frantically searching for his mother after he noticed her missing. Now that Shi Tou was safe, and his mother was able to sit and rest, he ran over with a worried expression on his face.
