Chapter 385: Chapter 385: Old Ms. Su_1
After so many years, she could tell at a glance that this young man was of high status.
The old woman’s eyes rolled, she paused her actions, but didn’t place the things on the ground, instead she asked a question.
"Who are you?"
Shen Wenchen was furious, but he didn’t lash out, instead going over to soothe Nanzhi first.
"Nannan, are you hurt?"
Nanzhi shook her head gently, signaling him not to worry about her.
Seeing that he was first concerned about Nanzhi, the old woman snorted coldly, and spoke with a fiery temper, "I see who it is, it’s this little floozy’s lover!"
The onlookers who had just gathered around were taken aback by her audacious remark.
What was the old woman’s background?
Dare to accuse the city’s lord like that?
"You old witch!" Liao Da, peeved at her unabashed comments, felt a surge of anger inside him.
The restaurant had been slow in the past few days, they were all worried about it. Today the weather was cooler and there were more male customers who came for wine, the waiter was looking forward to better business and the opportunity to earn more money.
But now, the dishes and wine had just been served and the guests hadn’t taken a few bites, this damned old woman barged in.
She didn’t introduce herself, she just went around smashing things.
The guests were not even talking about paying their bill, and if they didn’t demand an explanation, it would be considered nice. Yet she had the audacity to spew such nonsense.
"You might’ve just climbed out of the dung pit, that’s how foul-mouthed you are!"
Despite being clever, Liao Da was not someone to be trifled with.
"Hmph." The old woman was not offended, she just snorted in response, "You brat, do you know who I am? You dare to speak to me like that, aren’t you afraid of your head rolling off?"
"Old woman, what’s your identity? Tell us!"
A mocking voice from the crowd of onlookers echoed, quickly followed by agreement from others.
"Yeah, yeah, tell us your identity!"
Amidst the laughter of the crowd, the local officials didn’t stop the ruckus, just preventing the crowd from pressing in.
"Me?" The old woman didn’t find the situation embarrassing at all, instead she glanced around with smug satisfaction.
"I am the grandmother of your city lord!"
Upon hearing her words, the mob that had just started up closed their mouths in unison.
Their gazes subconsciously shifted to Shen Wenchen and Nanzhi.
This old woman sure had guts to claim such a relationship when he was present.
There were rumors that the city lord was preparing for marriage, but they couldn’t believe that this old hag could have raised a good granddaughter.
Certainly the city lord’s eyes were not so poor as to pass over Miss Su Tao and select a shrew, right?
Some people, who were careful thinkers, realized that Shen Wenchen had rushed to Nanzhi as soon as he entered, and felt they understood the truth.
"Take her away!" With a wave of Liu Jie’s hand, a few officers brandished their swords and moved to arrest her, scaring the confidence out of the old woman.
"What are you doing! I am your city lord’s grandmother! You dare to arrest me, my son-in-law will slay you!"
The old woman stared fiercely at the officials circling her, her chest heaving due to panic, it looked like she might collapse at any moment.
"Who is your granddaughter?" Nanzhi looked at her face, and couldn’t think of any girl who looked even remotely similar to her.
"You little hussy, seducing my grandson-in-law and pretending not to know who my granddaughter is!" Hearing Nanzhi speak, the old woman was immediately annoyed again. She made a move to pounce on her, but Liu Jie’s soldiers seized the opportunity to arrest her and put her in handcuffs.
Feeling the cold metal cuffs on her wrists, the old woman’s face turned pale. She stared at Liu Jie, trembling and unable to speak a word.
"What’s your granddaughter’s full name, and who sent you here?" Liu Jie looked at the chaos the main hall had become, his temples throbbing.
Since the general’s departure, the city had been peaceful for several days. But, on the day of his return, such a huge mishap occurred.
Liu Jie was troubled.
"My granddaughter is a well-known talent in Yan City! Her name is Su Tao, your city lord’s fiancée! You cannot arrest me!" The old woman was a farmwife by background and had always been afraid of officials. She wouldn’t have had the courage to mouth off at them in their face if she hadn’t been emboldened by others.
Three months ago, she was still farming at home when a few young men suddenly showed up.
As soon as they entered the courtyard, they asked if she was Su Tao’s grandmother.
Whenever she heard about that ingrate, she wished she had strangled her when her daughter-in-law had given birth.
She was a liability. Seeing her looks, the village chief had come over to propose for his son.
The village chief’s son was a good young man and she just had to be ungrateful. She stole the family’s silver and ran away on her wedding day!
Because they couldn’t return the dowry, her son and daughter-in-law had to work hard to repay the money. As a result, she had lost face in her old age!
When she heard them mention the name of that ungrateful thing, she wanted to drive them all out.
Then they said Su Tao had made some achievements and earned a lot of silver; that’s when she decided to follow them all the way to Yan City.
Over these three months, they had glorified Su Tao to no end. Saying things like, the lord of Yan City had lost his soul to her, or that the gentry of Yan City wanted to marry her. They claimed she was making tens to hundreds of taels of silver every day!
Five days after they arrived in Yan City, she wanted to go directly to the city lord’s residence to see the future courtyard, but those people stopped her, saying it was not convenient.
However, today when she was out, she heard someone saying that the Lord of Yan City was close to Lin Dongjia of the Three-Flavor Inn.
Upon hearing this, she was instantly infuriated.
Even if Su Tao was a liability, she couldn’t allow someone else to take over her granddaughter’s position as the lady of the city lord!
"Su Tao?" Nanzhi looked surprised, she really couldn’t see any resemblance between this old woman and Su Tao.
Though she had disagreements with Su Tao, she had to speak the truth.
Su Tao was truly beautiful.
This old woman, however, seemed to have nothing to do with her at all.
"Damn, don’t just claim connections randomly. How could Miss Su possibly have a relative like you!" A young man in the crowd couldn’t tolerate anyone defaming his goddess, and immediately retorted.
Others also chimed in, their demeanor was far from the calm and collected spectatorship from before.
Shen Wenchen didn’t speak but just looked at the old woman whose face was growing paler and waited for her to refute.
"Summon that ungrateful wretch to see if I’m her grandmother or not!"
Old Ms. Su gave the young man a glare, and shouted loudly.
Seeing her reaction, some people in the crowd began to hesitate.
Could it be, this old woman really is Miss Su’s grandmother?
Otherwise, how could she be so sure of her claim?
While a small proportion started having doubts, there were still many who remained firm in their belief that she was here deliberately to cause trouble and slander Su Tao.
